Countdown recap for Tuesday 10 June 2014.

Apologies for the slightly late recap, I've been a tad busy.

OT: Other words or solutions.

R01: G S C R G A E I E

Round 1: G S C R G A E I E

Roy: SAGGIER (7)
James: CIGARS (6)
DC: CAGIER (6)
Score: 7–0 (max 7)

A strong start from Roy as he spots the darren. Is he on his way to the finals?

Round 2: N F I O S E L N R

Roy: foilers
James: SINNER (6)
DC: LESION (6) FLORINS (7)
OT: INFERNOS (8)
Score: 7–6 (max 15)

Roy is unlucky here as his seven is invalid, so James takes points for his six. INFERNOS was there as the darrenic eight.

Round 3: 50, 100, 5, 7, 1, 9. Target: 479.

Roy: 474.
James: 479. (100-1)x5-(9+7) (10)
Score: 7–16 (max 25)

Good numbers ability there from James, who may be beginning to poop Roy's party.

Teatime teaser: TRIANGLE -> ALERTING

Round 4: E I U M P K C E Y

Roy: MUCKY (5)
James: PIECE (5)
DC: PUMICE (6)
OT: EYECUP (6) MICKEY (6)
Score: 12–21 (max 31)

Fives from both contestants here, while DC get one of the sixes.

Round 5: O E T D I E R T B

Roy: DOTTIER (7)
James: DOTTIER (7)
DC: ORBITED (7)
OT: TETRODE (7)
Score: 19–28 (max 38)

Both contestants get DOTTIER, and DC equal them with ORBITED. Seven was the max there, so everyone did well.

Round 6: 6, 4, 7, 2, 1, 10. Target: 451.

Roy: 450. Mistake in working.
James: 450. (7+2)x(4+1)x10 (7)
RR: 451. (7+4)x((6-2)x10+1) (10)
Score: 19–35 (max 48)

James has 450, and so has Roy, but unfortunately he forgot to say that he hadn't written it down so no points for him. Rachel shows us the exact solution.

Round 7: R O Q O P E R D S

Roy: droopers
James: POORER (6)
DC: SPOORED (7)
Score: 19–41 (max 55)

Roy is unlucky again as his eight is disallowed. James now has a very strong 22 point lead. Is it all over for Roy? DC get the darren.

Round 8: D T U G P I O I J

Roy: POUT (4)
James: DIGIT (5)
DC: PIG (3) DOG (3) IDIOT (5)
Score: 19–46 (max 60)

James extends his lead by spotting one of the five-letter maximums from a nasty round.

Round 9: 25, 2, 8, 9, 4, 6. Target: 562.

Roy: 564. Mistake in working.
James: 567. (9+8+6)x25-(4x2) (7)
RR: 562. ((25-9)x4+6)x8+2 (10)
Score: 19–53 (max 70)

Roy declares closer to the target than James but he's made a mistake so James takes seven points for being five away. Rachel has the exact solution again.

Teatime teaser: ENDALIFE -> ENFILADE

Round 10: S T D O A F R N I

Roy: afront
James: FAINTS (6)
DC: INSOFAR (7) RATIONS (7) STIFADO (7)
OT: INTRADOS (8)
Score: 19–59 (max 78)

It's all going wrong for Roy as he tries to spell affront with only one F. It looks like the end of the road for him now, but it's still possible to pull it back.

Round 11: L A D E X M U E L

Roy: MULLED (6)
James: MULLED (6)
DC: DELUXE (6)
OT: MEDULLA (7)
Score: 25–65 (max 85)

Both contestants have MULLED, DC has DELUXE, and the recap writer comes up with MEDULLA. Roy now needs to win both of the remaining letters rounds, and with a nine in at least one of them.

Round 12: S A V U T V L A R

Roy: VAULTS (6)
James: rasta
OT: AUSTRAL (7)
Score: 31–65 (max 92)

Well, he's won one of them. He just needs a nine now and he's back in the game.

Round 13: D P O E E O W M H

Roy: WHOOPED (7)
James: WHOOPED (7)
DC: WHOOPEE (7)
OT: WHOMPED (7)
Score: 38–72 (max 99)

There's no nine available here so Roy can't win now, but he makes the best of what he's given and gets the max. His opponent does the same, and DC provide an alternate seven.

Round 14: 100, 8, 2, 10, 1, 3. Target: 702.

Roy: 702. (8-1)x10+2 (10)
James: 702. (8-1)x10+2 (10)
Score: 48–82 (max 109)

A nice simple numbers round as the game draws to a close.

Round 15: S E E H E R T U T

No one buzzes. The answer was USHERETTE.
Final Score: 48–82 (max 119)

But a not so simple conundrum, that neither contestant can spot. A lady from the audience provides the answer: USHERETTE.

So, Roy won't be making the finals, but he's had a great run that he can be proud of. James won't be in the finals starting on Friday either, as there isn't time enough left in the series for him to win the requisite number of games. He could continue into the next series, however, if he continues playing well. C4C also has its own James, and you can join him tomorrow (or now, as he got his recap in before me :P) to see how he gets on, and make sure to be with Anthony on Friday as the Series 70 finals kick off with #1 seed and c4c/apto favourite Mark Murray taking on #8 seed Andy Gardner.

Statistics
Raw score: Roy 48 - James 88
