Apterite Samir Pilica struck octochampdom on Friday which means two new contestants today. The only thing that can be guaranteed beforehand is that one of them will be from the Manchester area.

Round 1: O C J A T H E D L

Roy: CLOTHED (7)
Carrie: LATCHED (7)
DC: CATHODE (7) LOCATED (7) LOATHED (7)
Score: 7–7 (max 7)

Little chance of judging the capabilities of either contestant in this extremely flat first round. Its sevens all round for both contestants and DC

Round 2: T R O I E N G A P

Roy: POTAGER (7)
Carrie: PONGIER (7)
DC: OPERATING (18)
Score: 14–14 (max 25)

Roy sat back during the countdown which made me type OPERATING into the recap writer as his word. As it is I was way off the mark as he (like his opponent) only has a seven.

Round 3: 8, 1, 2, 9, 25, 100. Target: 676.

Roy: 676. ((9-2)*100)-25+1 (10)
Carrie: 676. ((9-2)*100)-25+1 (10)
Score: 24–24 (max 35)

Both debutants will feel good about getting the extra ten points as a simple numbers game presents itself.

Teatime teaser: FREESLUR -> FERRULES

Round 4: H S M E A I S G E

Roy: SHAMES (6)
Carrie: MESSAGE (7)
DC: GEISHAS (7)
OT: AEGISES (7) MASHIES (7) MESSIAH (7)
Score: 24–31 (max 42)

Carrie’s MESSAGE SHAMES Roy as she takes the first lead of the game. Myleene seems proud of spotting GEISHAS.

Round 5: R O I A T K S E T

Roy: ROTATES (7)
Carrie: SKATER (6)
DC: TROIKAS (7) TOASTIER (8)
Score: 31–31 (max 50)

Roles reversed from the previous round as Roy gets level with his seven.

Round 6: 4, 8, 2, 7, 3, 25. Target: 690.

Roy: 690. ((7*4)*25)-8-2 (10)
Carrie: 690. ((7*4)*25)-8-2 (10)
Score: 41–41 (max 60)

Once again a simple numbers game presents no problem to either contestant

DC Guest: Myleene talks about a charity ship she did with her mother to the Philippines

Round 7: O A I D V C T U W

Roy: DIVOT (5)
Carrie: DACOIT (6)
DC: VIADUCT (7)
OT: OVIDUCT (7)
Score: 41–47 (max 67)

Carrie’s DACOIT suggests that she is a regular countdown viewer, she takes he lead for the second time with this spot.

Round 8: R N X A E I N L S

Roy: insaner
Carrie: LINERS (6)
DC: NAILERS (7) SALINE (6)
OT: ENSNARL (7) LANNERS (7) LARNIES (7) RELAXIN (7)
Score: 41–53 (max 74)

Roys word seems like its worth the risk but it doesn’t pay off and Carrie is able to stretch her lead. Plenty of sevens here but DC only mention one of them.

Round 9: 6, 2, 3, 75, 100, 50. Target: 339.

Roy: 338. (3*100)+50-(6*2) (7)
Carrie: 337.
RR: 339. (50*6)+((75+3)/2) (10)
Score: 48–53 (max 84)

Roy’s back in it with his one away, reducing the arrears to just five points.

Teatime teaser: WINDYGAS -> GWYNIADS

Round 10: R S D A E I N F E

Roy: SANDIER (7)
Carrie: RINSED (6)
DC: DEFINERS (8) ARSENIDE (8)
OT: NEARSIDE (8)
Score: 55–53 (max 92)

Roy takes the lead for the first time with SANDIER as Carrie only has 6, Myleene gets DEFINERS for eight which gives her a contestant-beater.

Round 11: T O A R U N G E I

Roy: ROUTEING (8)
Carrie: TEARING (7)
DC: OUTRANGE (8)
Score: 63–53 (max 100)

A max round for Roy takes him to ten points ahead, he looks like the favourite to win now.

OoW- Susie talks about the origins of a number of musical terms

Round 12: L Y S E A I O F S

Roy: FOSSIL (6)
Carrie: EASILY (6)
DC: OSSIFY (6)
OT: FALSIES (7) SALSIFY (7)
Score: 69–59 (max 107)

Sixes for the contestants, but surprisingly the same for DC as the two sevens here are words one would expect Susie to spot.

Round 13: E U G T O D E P L

Roy: POUTED (6)
Carrie: outpledge
DC: EELPOUT (7)
OT: PLEDGET (7)
Score: 75–59 (max 114)

Carries outpledge sounds very unlikely but it’s admirable that she went for it. This could be the decisive blow however because Roy is now more than ten ahead and Carrie will need to beat him on the numbers game to stay in with a hance

Round 14: 8, 3, 7, 3, 50, 25. Target: 857.

Roy: -
Carrie: -
RR: 857. ((25-8)*50)+7 (10)
Score: 75–59 (max 124)

A double blank by the contestants means that Roy is the new champion and gets the teapot. Rachel shows that this was actually another very simple one and its likely that it was the pressure of the situation that led to the double blank by Carrie and Roy

Round 15: I N S E C T L E G

Roy buzzes on 5 seconds to say SELECTING which is correct.
Final Score: 85–59 (max 134)

Five seconds for SELECTING seems like a long time but Roy won’t care about that as he spots it to score another ten points. He gets the win having been a standby contestant, can he make a run for the finals at this very late stage in the series.

I am on holiday for the next two Mondays so won’t be back in this slot until the 23rd of June. Newcomer to c4c Sean Fletcher will cover next Monday (you’ll do great Sean) and James Robinson will cover the 16th (James will do great as always).

Best wishes to the entire c4c community and I’ll be back here in three weeks…
