Post by Anthony Endsor »

Hello again and welcome to my first recap of 2014. It's time for that Friday feeling again, as the first week of the new series comes to an end. Our reigning champion has been here all this week. Bobby Banerjee has carried his bat despite some fiercely tough competition  at times. Today he faces Helen Keating to try and secure win number 5. Enjoy.

Enjoy the show.

Round 1: S P U D K I O O O

C1: ODIOUS (6)
C2: SPUD (4)
DC: SPOOK (5) SKIDOO (6)
OT: ISOPOD (6)
Score: 6–0 (max 6)

Great start for Bobby as he gets 6 with ODIOUS.

Round 2: E I O T N P C E R

C1: erection
C2: PIONEER (7)
DC: PRENTICE (8) RECEPTION (18)
Score: 6–7 (max 24)

Helen PIONEER's her way into the lead with a 7. BUT there was a 9 there! RECEPTION. Of course erection is in the selection, but Bobby declared it as 7 so it was disallowed.

Round 3: 8, 10, 9, 5, 4, 100. Target: 497.

C1: 497. (5x100) -( 4-(10-9)) (10)
C2: -
Score: 16–7 (max 34)

Bobby makes light work of 497 and regains the lead.

Teatime teaser: LOLLYBAG -> GLOBALLY

Round 4: L S L R A E A X H

C1: HALERS (6)
C2: HARES (5)
OT: ASHLAR (6) LAHARS (6) LASHER (6)
Score: 22–7 (max 40)

Another 6 for Bobby with HALERS.

Round 5: N T N M I A O S E

C1: MENTIONS (8)
C2: staine
DC: INMATES (7) NOMINATES (18)
Score: 30–7 (max 58)

It's another 9 for DC, missed by our contestants. Bobby MENTIONS an 8 which puts another 'stain' (without the e) on the scoreboard for Helen.

Round 6: 2, 8, 9, 50, 75, 100. Target: 817.

C1: 818. (8 x 100) + (9 x 2) (7)
C2: 811.
RR: 817. (9 x 75) + 100+50-8 (10)
Score: 37–7 (max 68)

Not quite perfection, but Bobby increases his lead with one away for 818.

John Inverdale continues the 100 year anniversary theme by talking about the first traffic lights introduced in 1914.

Round 7: M A D O R S A I O

C1: MOORS (5)
C2: DOOMS (5)
DC: DIORAMAS (8)
Score: 42–12 (max 76)

Points for Helen at last as she joins Bobby with a 5.

Round 8: A O I T R F Z E O

C1: ROOFIE (6)
C2: trio
OT: FOETOR (6) FOOTER (6) FOOTIE (6) OATIER (6) OOFIER (6) OOZIER (6)
Score: 48–12 (max 82)

And Bobby gets a further 6 ahead with ROOFIE.

Round 9: 1, 3, 4, 2, 4, 50. Target: 545.

C1: -
C2: -
RR: 545. (50-4) x 3 - 2 x 4 + 1 (10)
Score: 48–12 (max 92)

Nobody gets close with this, but Rachel managed to get 545.

Teatime teaser: SAXBORGS -> GRASSBOX

Round 10: A O E Y P G E P T

C1: GAPE (4)
C2: egypt
DC: APOGEE (6) TEAPOY (6)
OT: GOATEE (6) PEGTOP (6) PEYOTE (6) POTAGE (6)
Score: 52–12 (max 98)

A lowly 4 for Bobby, but egypt is of course capitalised so Helen fails to score again.

Round 11: D S L W I E O S N

C1: WIELDS (6)
C2: SWINES (6)
DC: WINDLESS (8) SWINDLES (8) SNOWSLIDE (18)
Score: 58–18 (max 116)

6 a piece, and yet another 9 goes begging. SNOWSLIDE.

Susie talks about the origin of the word 'eavesdropping'.

Round 12: R E A E M G L T I

C1: EMIGRATE (8)
C2: GRIME (5)
DC: LITREAGE (8) MEGALITRE (18)
Score: 66–18 (max 134)

Bobby isn't about to leave the country, but he does EMIGRATE in this round. And yet another 9 is missed. This is shaping up to be a high max score. Where's Callum Todd when you need him? I told you he'd applied a series too early :P

Round 13: N T E S E E R N H

C1: ENTERS (6)
C2: SHEEN (5)
DC: TENNERS (7)
OT: ENTREES (7) ETHENES (7)
Score: 72–18 (max 141)

And Bobby ENTERS another 6 on the board to go further ahead.

Round 14: 2, 5, 3, 100, 75, 50. Target: 955.

C1: 953. (5 x 2 x 100) - 50 + 3 (7)
C2: -
RR: 955. (100 + 3) x (50/5) - 75 (10)
Score: 79–18 (max 151)

Bobby gets 2 away for 7 points. It takes Rachel a little while, but she got the 955 in the end.

Round 15: T R Y N A M E I T

No one buzzes. The answer was MATERNITY.
Final Score: 79–18 (max 161)

So Bobby cleans up again with another comprehensive win. Nobody got the conundrum, but the damage had been done long ago as Helen was clearly out of her depth against a very worthy champion. This was an amazing game of missed 9 letter words. No fewer than 4 were in the game and none were found by our contestants. This could have been a record breaker. The max was 161 which would have smashed the all time record of 146 held jointly by Julian Fell and Conor Travers. I do believe there are players on this forum who would have got at least somewhere near this today. But take nothing away from Bobby. He has played well this week and will carry his bat into Monday. Well that's it from me for today. Please join one of our new recappers Andy McGurn on Monday to see if Bobby can make it 6 wins. I'll be back next Friday, by which time we will have a different champion one way or another :) Thanks for reading and goodbye.

Ha, thanks for your faith in me Anthony, but I played along to this show and scored 140, missing HALERS, MEGALITRE, and the conundrum, so I would have fallen short of the record.

Excellent recap, as ever.

Thanks Callum. :) Well if you only got 140, maybe it just isn't to be and Julian Fell and Conor Travers will remain immortal with 146 forever.
