I got into football fairly late in life (if you can call twelve year's old late) so there never came a moment where I 'had to' choose a team to support, therefore I watch nearly every game for a neutral's perspective, although I do root for the British teams whenever they play in Europe.

Liverpool fan here, and I'm a local fan before anybody asks - I was born a mere 200 miles away from the hallowed Anfield turf and reside just 190 miles down the M62+M6+M1+M25.

Also Hamilton Academical (well, someone has to) and England - wasn't in Belarus but have been to the other 3 qualifiers thus far.

Don't get to many games, but am off to Anfield for the 4th time (and first in 4 1/2 years) for L'pool v Portsmouth in a fortnight, and may yet get a ticket for the Chelsea match next Sunday.

I was born and bred in Rugby so I also dislike that particular sport as we were forced to play it at school. Darts is the greatest sport as you get to use your brain a bit!

I share my loyalties between Tottenham Hotspur, who I've been crazy about since I was in primary school, and Alsager Town who I now watch whenever I can. The two clubs are only eight divisions apart, but if Tottenham continue the way they're playing at the moment and Alsager improve just a little, it's conceivable that I could be watching them playing each other in the Blue Star Conference in four years time.

I "casually" support Man Utd, genetically inherited from my dad rather than the allure of glory. I emphasize the casualness -- I've seen little football this season.

I was fortunate(?) enough to go to the Champions League final in Moscow and despite the result it was a great experience. Moscow is a fantastic city.

I'm proud to be a fourth generation supporter, I have postcard pictures of my great-grandfather & my grandmother in the crowds in 1911 & 1920. My children are fifth generation supporters, and I'm looking forward to taking my future grandchildren to Falmer, if it's ever built!

When I was young (late 1950s & 60s) our "local rivals" were always Portsmouth. The rivalry with Crystal Palace seems (to me) to have started in the 1970s when we were both in Div3 (now LeagueOne) and rivals for promotion under managers Terry Venables and Alan Mullery. Certainly our nickname of Seagulls comes from stealing Palace's chant of "Eagles! Eagles!" into "Seagulls, Seagulls".
Having said that, there are claims that our rivalry with Palace goes back to the early 1900s, but even I wasn't born then!

I don't remember where I read the claims of Brighton/Palace rivalry from the early 1900s, but it includes the fact that Brighton is closer to Selhurst Park than Portsmouth. As mentioned on your link though, Palace have much closer rivals than us, as do Portsmouth.

I also used to attend the Goldstone Ground in the late 1950s and early 1960s - 9d to get in, Mike Tiddy and the 3-3 draw with Burnley (top of Div 1 at the time). But I don't remember any paticular rivalry with Portsmouth, or indeed anyone else. I think I'm right in saying that Brighton is the most remote football league club, and it's hard to built up any local animosity when your nearest neighbour is nearly 50 miles away. In any case, prior to this period, Portsmouth were a major force in Div 1, and Brighton were solid Div 3 South. It's hard to imagine Pompey fans being much fussed about Brighton.

I remember Mike Tiddy too, perhaps because I used to stand at the front of the East Stand and he played on the right-wing.
Although 1958-9 was our first season in the dizzy heights of Div2, Portsmouth were relegated from Div1 that season and we played them in 59-60 & 60-1 before they were relegated. We were relegated the following season and I assume Pompey were promoted at the same time as we didn't then play them in Div.3.
In the 60s SouthernTV showed "Southern Soccer" on a Sunday; this was Southampton (Div.1) if they had a home match, otherwise Portsmouth (Div.2) most home games, and Brighton, Bournemouth & Gillingham about once a season each!

I'm not sporty at all, well aside from being an aerobics instructor!, but if I had to support any team it would be Dundee United because my Dad's cousin David Narey used to play for them and he scored a goal for Scotland against Brazil in the 1982 World Cup.

I've only met him a couple of times, last time being my Dad's funeral in January, and I didn't hesitate in telling him how proud I am of him as he's a legend as every English bloke I've ever known who follows football knows who he is. Heh, I remember that. We bought a new TV just before España '82 and either the shop or manufacturer (can't remember which) had a promotion on where you got a random player from the finals, and you received £10 for every goal they scored. Presumably they deliberately gave everybody people who weren't very likely to score at all, and we got David. I still remember us all going mental when he scored that goal, which seems like a bit of an overreaction looking back now. Still, I guess £10 was a lot of money back then...
