April Idiots

Post by Matt Morrison »

I vaguely meant to trawl round a few sites like BBC News (probably too boring) and Football 365, etc. etc. etc. to see what April Fool's headlines they did.
But I only remembered in the afternoon, seconds before I remembered that you're supposed to only do them before 12pm so I was too late to check anything out.

I did see Google's yearly effort which is still up - I guess Americans don't subscribe to the 12pm deadline.

So, did any of you catch any good ones round the web? Get any good ones played on you in real life? Play any tricks on other people? And that.

YouTube have a button "1911" which you can make to turn the video into a silent movie.

I saw that early this morning, and never once did it cross my mind it was an April Fool's. I thought it was some kind of special celebration of something or other. That's pretty lame. Also, it didn't work on my own video unless I logged out to do it.

Ian Dent arrived in to apterous just after midnight asking if people had seen the news on the front page of apterous that it was shutting down. Managed to hoodwink Scott Gillies.

Exposed! Today's April fools jokes

Nice round up from the Independent of 9 hoaxes - I particularly liked Rob Brydon doing Ken Bruce's Radio 2 slot and pretending to be him!

Yeah, it was quite entertaining, especially when he ran out of things to say and just mumbled unintelligbly a la Sir Rowley Birkin QC but still keeping Ken's accent and intonation and throwing in odd real words like "Simon Mayo". He also talked on the phone at one point to Terry Wogan, which I believe was actually Peter Serafinowicz.

The one about the zimmer frame and the skateboard I saw on BBC news this morning and thought nothing of it really. Only when reading that run down of the top pranks did I realise how stupid I'd been. Then again it was like half 7 so I was still pretty asleep.

Well, I did set up a comment on an Anglo Italian game

http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=425588

which drew one person in, but I'm not even sure he realised he'd been had. There weren't many people around at the time unfortunately.

Yeah, I didn't get that was what you were going for. Charlie had mentioned something about having 2 scores for the same game when it goes to tie-break conundrums, so I suppose this didn't seem so outlandish anyway.
Mike Brown: "Round 12: T N R S A E I G U

C1: SIGNATURE (18) ["9; not written down"]
C2: SEATING (7)
Score: 108–16 (max 113)

Another niner for Adam and yet another century. Well done, that man."

I discovered yesterday that an e-mail I'd read in good faith was in fact a joke. Given the context of the e-mail, I could be forgiven though :/

Just a few I came across which I think were April Fool's:
  • - Richard Branson launching Virgin Volcanic so that people can journey to the centre of the Earth via their nearest volcano
    - Daniel Craig being invited by the Queen to open the Olympic Games
    - Alesha Dixon set to compete for Britain's fencing team at the Olympics after being good during Sport Relief
    - George Osbourne announcing a 'green' tax on chilled champagne
    - Mock photo of Simon Cowell and David Walliams getting close in a London Park
    - A Hungry Hippo's iPad thing
I was going to set a quiz question where I read four news stories from the day of which only one was true (and I was going to use the zombie guns one of Putin as being the true one) but I decided against it just in case I got it wrong.

There was something on a hosepipe amnesty too, which I skimmed over until I realised what the date was...

Nope. They realised they stuck the leap day in the wrong place, so they're skipping April 1st.
