Jess the Cat

Post by Michael Wallace »

So today I got up early, and was treated to an episode of 'Guess With Jess', which appears to be a TV programme starring Postman Pat's black and white cat.

For the purposes of talking about it, it occurred to me I didn't know what gender Jess was, so I checked, and now want to see what everyone else thinks (spoilers: I presumed a girl, but realised I didn't actually know - if you do know, I want to know how you know - is it mentioned on the show? Does Jess ever get a feline girlfriend? Maybe Pat gets him neutered in an episode about sexual health?)

With regards to Guess With Jess, it was pretty bad. They claimed it was spring (on June 21st?), and today's question was "What is my favourite thing about spring?". Apparently Jess's favourite thing about spring is...baby birds! Apparently because they're "soooooo cute", rather than because *OM NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM*. So we're teaching our children that cats find baby birds cute, rather than tasty, which just sounds like a good way to get some kids to introduce their pet cat to their pet bird "because they'll be friends".

Scandalous.

I voted female because it makes sense. My Postman Pat trivia is limited...I do once remember reading that he supports Pencaster United, which might not be a well known fact or maybe it is? I never used to watch Postman Pat you see.

I voted female before I read your post, as Jess is a girl's name. However, I always assumed that Jess the cat was male.

Damnit, I thought I'd managed an infallible poll at last :x

Edit: You're the first person I've encountered who thought Jess was male - any reason for this? Or did you just get a super-manly vibe from him?

Male. Pat refers to him from time to time as 'he' or 'him'. (I've got a 3 year old...)

Have you seen that new one, special delivery service? I caught one episode totally at random (didn't know it was a new thing) and all of a sudden Pat was in a helicopter. I was all "wow, when the hell did Pat learn to fly one of them, and surely that's a really dangerous place for Jess to sit".

I just never questioned it - he just has a boy-cat look about him!

And on the Postman Pat wikipedia page, Jess is referred to as "he". So there. :geek:

Be honest Ian. Did he show you his penis?

That implies he had a choice.

@ Michael - yes he's a big fan. Just wait till the safety complaints come rushing in like they have done for Peppa Pig not wearing a seatbelt, or Diego for it looking like he's not using safety equipment to swing through the jungle, or Bob the Builder for not having goggles etc. I ask you?! Heaven only knows how we threaded our way through this dangerous life to adulthood.

Oh, and definitive proof (penultimate paragraph) :)

@ Ryan
I'm not even gonna ask how you found that - I dread to think what else your internet history's got lurking

Does anyone remember Vicky the Viking? Apparently "he" was a boy despite looking and sounding like a girl and having a girl's name.

Tripitaka, from Monkey, confused the hell out of me.
The only time I ever fancied a monk.
Someone post a picture to prove he was a she.

My housemate keeps trying to get me to download shemale porn, does that count? No cats though.

I voted 'other' because I regarded Jess as like one of those toys that live on parcel shelves (when I had a car there were a seal and a pig) - I don't remember Jess doing anything :!: :)

I voted male because I know that in Denmark Jess is called Per, and Per (pronounced pier, approx.) is a boy's name.

Jess is a male.

I read the info box on one of 'his' shows and it said something along the lines of 'as Jess and his friends have fun around the garden.' That proves it. Forumites do not know the gender of children's favourite characters.
