Palindromes

Post by Ian Fitzpatrick »

Watching Eggheads yesterday I came across a long palindrome I hadn't seen before, I repeat it for you here in case it is new to you (unlikely I know!).

A MAN A PLAN A CANAL PANAMA

Anyone aware of any longer ones?

There's a palindromic novel called "Dr. Awkward & Olson in Oslo" but the text doesn't seem to be on the internets anywhere. I thought everything was on the internets these days?

Also, this thread seems to be about ten pages wide :?

"It's Ade, Cilla, Sue, Dame Vita, Edna, Nino, Emo! Come on in and eat, I've made us all iced asti." (Stephen Fry)

Bill Bryson writes of palindromes in his book 'Mother Tongue'.

Hmm. Now, where's the submit button disappeared to - the page has gone well weird.

I've never been able to understand the fascination with palindromes. They're basically symmetrical Jason Larsen posts.

It's because of a really long palindrome that's decided to move into this thread and take up that much space. Can't you see him?

Oh.
Yeah.
Lacking, of course, in any of the delights of a standard palindrome though.

For those who are religious (see separate thread) (no, don't) the first words spoken by man was a palindrome:

Really? Does that mean that you can't see the (very) long string of Zs in Gevin's post (which is the reason the topic is so wide)?

I can see the string, but it's truncated at the standard width of the message.

Given that I've already told you how to fix all of these problems at a stroke, it seems a bit perverse to go on about them.

The crap one ("AeroGreen") is the default. You need to change it to "prosilver" for it to work properly.

If by that you mean this 'skin' thing - I haven't got the first cocking notion what a skin is. This is a Countdown forum - a telly prog I happen to enjoy. It doesn't make me interested in computers. I happen to own a laptop which I'm able to switch on - that's as far as it goes.

I'd have thought the less interested in computers you were, the keener you'd be to make the experience of using one as painless as possible. But hey, what do I know.

In the unlikely event that you're interested, you change the skin (which is simply your preference for the 'look and feel' of the site) as follows:
  • Click the link at the top of the page that says User Control Panel
  • Under the Options menu on the left hand side, click the link that says Board preferences
  • Under Edit global settings, look for the line that says My board style:. From the drop-down list, select "prosilver". Then click the Submit button at the bottom of the page.
That's it. You can always change it back if you don't like it.

It turns out that the problem wasn't the skin, it's more that the really long string was in a minute font size! Why didn't anyone mention that? The page is still miles wide in prosilver too.

Okay, I'll check when I get home and am using Firefox. Right now I'm at work and stuck with IE6.

I'm posting this from Internet Explorer 7 (prosilver) and the page isn't miles wild.

Wow, I'd forgotten how much better the font looks in IE than in Chrome though.

Just a thought, do you mean that the page isn't at all miles wide, or do you mean that in prosilver it's possible to ignore that the page is miles wide, unlike in the other skins?

Ian's right. I've just tried the skin Phil suggested, and although the page isn't miles wide anymore, the one particular post still is if you highlight it to read all the text. That of course doesn't matter though, because it's not affecting the rest of the thread.

I am stunned by how different this "ProSilver" skin is to the "AeroGreen". Absolutely everything is different. Right down to the avatars being on the right hand side instead of the left. I will keep this skin for a while to see how I get on with it, because changes always seem annoying first of all, but then you get used to them and don't notice. Anyway, on a lot of websites you don't have any choice when they decide to change the look, so you have to adapt.

It would be interesting to see how many of us are using each skin, as I hadn't thought about changing to this very different view before, but for once I cannot be bothered to do a poll on it.

ProSilver was the original skin, before Charlie inexplicably changed the default to AeroGreen. As far as I'm aware there's no actual advantages to AeroGreen, and as it was different I found it was taking me slightly longer to navigate, spot stuff I hadn't read etc so I pretty much changed back straight away.

Ah, this reminds me of that old saying concerning this matter:

"Revlis Orpenoreh told Thaednis, 'AeroGreen's evil, lives neer gore, as in deaht. Dl other one - ProSilver.'"

Anyway, I'd tend to disagree with Revlis. I prefer AeroGreen. Maybe that's just because I'm used to it, but it seems sleeker and more professional. Also, I don't like the way prosilver completely cuts out all of Gevin's z's. What other crucial bits of information might prosilver decide to 'cut off'?

Revlis ftw.

I shall not allow this myth to spread that AeroGreen is superior.

No, it never propagates if I set a gap or prevention.

Phil, I had a go at changing the skin and did manage it. And managed to change it back immediately when I didn't like it! It doesn't have the jiggly blue arrows. It had jiggly lines but they were jiggling on things I 'd read. I'm trained up on jiggly arrows and must stick to what I know. But ta anyway. I'm in Leamington today, apropos to nothing! x

I think Richard meant that if there was something after the Zs (or at any point beyond the screen margin) you wouldn't be able to see it in Prosilver.

If you're on Windows XP, try:

Control Panel > Display > Appearance > Effects... > Use the following method to smooth the edges of screen fonts: ClearType

IE (since version 7, I believe) has ClearType built in, but the above option should improve the display of fonts in other browsers. If you're lucky.

^Bump. So I was thinking about our beautiful, symmetric friend the palindrome and how some words are almost palindromes but not quite like BANANA. It then occurred to me that all words can be expressed as a sequence of palindromes ie BANANA = B + ANANA. TINNITUS = TINNIT + U + S. SENSELESSNESSES = S + E + N + SELES + S + N + ESSE + S etc, and it would be cool to award every word a score depending on how awesome it's palindromicity is. Obviously words with long palindromic sections relative to the length of the word should be scored highly. Here is a basic scoring system I've come up with called the rotcaF Factor:

rF = (Sum of squares of lengths of palindromic sections)/(Number of palindromic sections)

eg BANANA would score (1^2 + 5^2)/2 = 13. AGAMEMNON would score (3^2 + 3^2 + 3^2)/3 = 9.

Any wholly palindromic word would simply score the square of its length ie HANNAH scores 36. ROTAVATOR scores 81.
Any null palindrome (a word with no palindromic sections of more than 1 letter) would score 1.

Somehow I think this scoring system could be put to profitable use so feel free to suggest your own favourite palindromes to cash in on this lucrative deal! I'm not sure how phrases of more than one word should be scored or even in fact if they should be allowed a score. Thoughts?

DAMMIT I'M MAD!

I think you should define the rotcaf factor for a given word to be the maximum of the possible rFs. For example, if we take the word BABBAB, this could have an rF of 9 or 36 depending on where you split it. (I can't think of any real words where this matters.)

Unless I've understood something wrong, the rF for MIRIAM would also be 9. But intuitively, I wouldn't think it should score as high as the much more palindrome-tastic AGAMEMNON.

I make it 3, with

M - IRI - A - M -> (1² + 3² + 1² + 1²) / 4 = 3

which seems reasonable.
