Tough choice, but I do like a bit of mild brie- don't get me wrong, I love blue cheese, but you can't beat a bit of brie.

There are alot of cheeses that beat Brie :D.

Can't say I am a fan of Brie or even Camembert (sickly cheeses in my opinion).

oh god, that brings back memories (I say that like I wasn't there 6 months ago...) - early morning scramble to lectures, through borders, through the market place, and that *horrid* smell :P

I quite like cheese, but can't really stand things that smell cheesy (yes, I'm an odd sort, don't even get me started on cheese *flavoured* things...)

I think that cooked cheese (especially that really orange Cheddar) smells uncannily like vomit. More neutral cheeses such as mozzarella seem to be OK when cooked, but there's still a hint of a vomity smell about them. Does anyone else notice this, or am I drawing on some weird olfactory memory?

I don't know about red and white cheeses but I love the smell of melted blue cheese. Nothing beats a crumpet with melted blue cheese.

Are there any great American cheeses, Jason? I'm afraid my current image of U.S. cheese is of a block of Monterey Jack! I'm willing to be educated!!

You are right about Monterey Jack, it does come from the US.

Regular American cheese is a lot like cheddar, but it's much thinner.

I also think there's another cheese called Colby that's from here.

Going back to blue cheese I can't believe I forgot the Oxford Blue Baby: http://www.thecheeseworks.co.uk/product.php?id=65

It may be £7.50 but well worth the money :D.

Stilton here, too.

I do like roquefort, as well.

There are some nice Irish cheeses, Cashel make a good blue and there are some fine smoked applewood cheeses knocking around.

I'm particularly fond of halloumi (although possibly because it usually just tastes of salt), and occasionally paneer (although possibly because it usually comes with curry)

a nice strong cheddar is a good default, though

I like white cheeses like Lancashire, Wensleydale and Caerphilly. Cheddar with Marmite is great, though not that easy to find in stores. I end up having to buy it mail order.

Has anyone tried any UK goats cheese before? I have always wanted to try it, but I have never brought it before, in case it was a waste of money. Can anyone describe the taste of goats cheese to me please.

Yep, it's really nice. I don't know if I can describe the taste if you've never tried any goats cheese, but the stuff made in this country is pretty standard, i.e. nice -- quite salty and soft in texture. Greek feta is the best but won't be to your taste if you don't like normal goats cheese.

I have tried Feta before, but only once IIRC. I wasn't really fond of it because of its bland taste, but if I had it in the house I would eat it again so I might give goats cheese a try then. Instead though of eating it right out of the packet (which is what I normally do with cheese - that or mix it in with noddles ), I could always heat it under the grill until it melts a bit and it might taste nicer.

Well, you can milk anything with nipples. Chhurpi is made from yak's milk, which you might consider weird depending on where in the world you come from. My personal favourite (which I just discovered) is Yunnan Cheese, made in China, which is buffalo milk plus rice vinegar. Gotta try some of that...

I'm going to try and find some Yunnan. I don't suppose anywhere local will stock it. Do they post cheese?

Where can I get Chhurpi (Chhurpi) cheap (cheap)?

I know you asked this quite a while back, but there are loads of cheese shops online that do post cheese around the UK, but they are quite expensive and I don't think they stock Chinese cheese.
