Who posts here?

Post by Gavin Chipper »

I've decided to do a brief analysis of the people who have posted most on C4C. The people with at least 1000 posts are:

1. Charlie Reams: 9281
2. James Robinson: 8531
3. Jon Corby: 7479
4. Matt Morrison: 6757
5. Gavin Chipper: 5989
6. Michael Wallace: 5458
7. Kirk Bevins: 4919
8. Jon O'Neill: 3956
9. Jason Larsen: 3881
10. Ryan Taylor: 3531
11. Ben Wilson: 3295
12. Phil Reynolds: 3143
13. Ian Volante: 2928
14. Dinos Sfyris: 2703
15. Joseph Bolas: 2446
16. Kai Laddiman: 2314
17. Marc Meakin: 2274
18. David O'Donnell: 2010
19. Howard Somerset: 1954
20. Rhys Benjamin: 1832
21. Ben Hunter: 1770
22. JimBentley: 1759
23. Tony Atkins: 1704
24. Derek Hazell: 1535
25. Adam Gillard: 1501
26. Martin Gardner: 1492
27. Eoin Monaghan: 1456
28. Mike Brown: 1383
29. Sue Sanders: 1334
30. Graeme Cole: 1296
31. JackHurst: 1263
32. Lesley Hines: 1250
33. Mark Deeks: 1235
34. Andy Wilson: 1145
35. Julie T: 1129
36. Paul Howe: 1067
37. Joseph Krol: 1063
38. Andy Platt: 1060
39. Jordan F: 1046

So 39. That's 39 people in the whole world that have made at least 1000 posts on C4C. It's not exactly many. And if you're reading this and you're not on this list, you need to up your game. But this doesn't tell the whole story. Some of these people are part of a special secret subforum that the rest of us can't see. Clearly all the posts in this subforum are irrelevant. (There may also have been other subforums like uber-spoilers for those who have been in the studio for series "finals" but these are unlikely to contribute massively to people's totals.) But if you do an advanced search by user name, you should be able to see how many posts people have made to the subforums that are visible to us plebs. So let's do that:

1. James Robinson: 8515 (99.81% of all his posts)
2. Charlie Reams: 8227 (88.64%)
3. Jon Corby: 6034 (80.68%)
4. Gavin Chipper: 5990 (100.02% - don't ask me)
5. Matt Morrison: 5894 (87.23%)
6. Kirk Bevins: 4451 (90.49%)
7. Michael Wallace: 4063 (74.44%)
8. Jason Larsen: 3881 (100%)
9. Phil Reynolds: 3143 (100%)
10. Jon O'Neill: 2964 (74.92%)
11. Ian Volante: 2928 (100%)
12. Ryan Taylor: 2878 (81.51%)
13. Dinos Sfyris: 2473 (91.49%)
14. Joseph Bolas: 2446 (100%)
15. Kai Laddiman: 2310 (99.83%)
16. Marc Meakin: 2274 (100%)
17. Ben Wilson: 2262 (68.65%)
18. Rhys Benjamin: 1832 (100%)
19. Howard Somerset: 1740 (89.05%)
20. David O'Donnell: 1731 (86.12%)
21. Tony Atkins: 1702 (99.88%)
22. Ben Hunter: 1633 (92.26%)
23. Derek Hazell: 1535 (100%)
24. JimBentley: 1511 (85.90%)
25. Adam Gillard: 1501 (100%)
26. Martin Gardner: 1492 (100%)
27. Eoin Monaghan: 1454 (99.86%)
28. Sue Sanders: 1334 (100%)
29. Mike Brown: 1320 (95.44%)
30. Graeme Cole: 1296 (100%)
31. Lesley Hines: 1230 (98.40%)
32. Andy Wilson: 1145 (100%)
33. Julie T: 1129 (100%)
34. Joseph Krol: 1063 (100%)
35. Andy Platt: 1050 (99.06%)
36. Jordan F: 1046 (100%)

37. JackHurst: 967 (76.56%)
38. Paul Howe: 966 (90.53%)
39. Mark Deeks: 809 (65.51%)

So what do we see from this? Well, James Robinson is now top, toppling Charlie Reams. Congratulations. A lot of this must be down to his excellent work with the historical recaps - his post count shot up around that time. Also, the worst offender for posting in secret (proportion wise) is Mark Deeks - only 65.51% of his posts are in non-secret subforums! This is a disgrace! He is also one of three people who drop under 1000 posts in this new list. Next worst is Ben Wilson on 68.65%, then we have Michael Wallace on 74.44% and JackHurst on 76.56%. These are the only ones under 80%. But anyone under 90% needs to take a long hard look at themselves in the mirror.

But what will these lists look like in the future? A lot of these people barely post at all now, and some haven't posted for ages. So here's a count of their visible posts in the last six months:

1. Gavin Chipper: 425
2. James Robinson: 264
3. Tony Atkins: 181
4. JimBentley: 122
5. Jon Corby: 106
6. Graeme Cole: 96
7. Jordan F: 67
8. Rhys Benjamin: 65
9. Ben Wilson: 61
10. Ian Volante: 53
10. Mark Deeks: 53
12. Jon O'Neill: 47
13. Marc Meakin: 43
14. Matt Morrison: 40
15. Adam Gillard: 37
16. Charlie Reams: 21
17. Phil Reynolds: 20
17. Ryan Taylor: 20
19. Mike Brown: 19
20. Andy Wilson: 4
21. Julie T: 3
21. Andy Platt: 3
23. Eoin Monaghan: 2
24. Dinos Sfyris: 1
24. Lesley Hines: 1
24. JackHurst: 1
27. Kirk Bevins: 0
27. Michael Wallace: 0
27. Jason Larsen: 0
27. Joseph Bolas: 0
27. Kai Laddiman: 0
27. Howard Somerset: 0
27. David O'Donnell: 0
27. Ben Hunter: 0
27. Derek Hazell: 0
27. Martin Gardner: 0
27. Sue Sanders: 0
27. Joseph Krol: 0
27. Paul Howe: 0

That's a pretty poor effort from most people. Only five over 100, and two with an average of over a post a day (although Tony Atkins is nearly there). This forum has existed for about 7 years and 8 months so someone who joined when the forum was new would have to make around 65 posts per six month period to be on 1000 now. That's the top 8, although Jordan and Rhys are on the borderline. Only the top six would comfortably make it.

13 people haven't posted at all, and 20 in total have under five posts - that's more than 50% of the whole list! Obviously there are newer members who are more active than a lot of these people, so a top 39 of the most active in the last six months would look completely different. I'm not sure how many of these people would make it. Anyone want to have a guess? I might do a search for some other members if I feel like it but it won't be exhaustive.

I'm top with James Robinson second, so we could be set to dominate first and second places in years to come. My average in the last six months is actually higher than my overall average and would put me on about 6500, so basically what I'm saying is that I'm single-handedly keeping this forum going. You're welcome.

Do you REALLY want me to make the 'C4C/Apto/Countdown Erotic Dreams' subforum public? Because believe me, out of everyone on c4c, it'd probably be worst for you.

This is amazing statsery Gevin even though it comes from such a bitter place. I'm pretty happy to still have 4th position considering that if you could map out the frequency of my posts then the last couple of years has been absolutely dismal, prior to that I was probably scheduled to become number 1 super poster, and even that without ever really posting in spoilers or recaps. Things started to go downhill when we lost likes and I had one less incredible record to defend.

I'm shocked I'm still 14th in the last six months, I think if you took the six months before that I probably didn't get into double figures even. Predict you'll have overtaken me shortly into 2016.

It really doesn't though. I was just interested in post counts and thought it would make sense to separate out the visible from the invisible. And it would be quite difficult to do that without having at least a small dig along the way.

That's 14th of those with at least 1000 posts in total though. You might be lower.

No, I mean that your figures are wrong as I originally stated. You've not accounted for the admin forums, moderated messages, deleted messages (by the initial poster or an admin), or the deleted spam messages.

Incidentally - it's a bit off-topic as it's from a long-gone forum, but I feel it has relevance here - I've been looking back at my archived stuff from old computers and got the full story of Harry Peters, Ivan Pyne et al. Watcha think of that, Toby? Shall I spell it all out post by post?

Admin forums come under the general secret forums I mentioned. And yes deleted messages will affect things but it's not going to have a big effect.

Do what you want. I feel I've hit a nerve but I can't think why.

Edit - Maybe I misinterpreted the tone based on what I thought was abruptness above. But yes, by all means post them. It could be amusing.

I can't be bothered to dig it all out again, but the point was that you repeatedly made things up on the c4 forum about imaginary people (Harry Peters, Ivan Pyne, et al) and then subsequently admitted that you were using pseudonyms to do so, and that shot your credibility.

It was quite funny, wasn't it? Maybe I'll do it tomorrow. And please don't be offended - there's no ill-feeling here, I found it hilarious - but you don't come out of it looking very credible, that's my only reason to not just post the whole thing.

OK cool. The Ivan Pyne thing was obviously a joke though. If I remember rightly, I posted saying that they'd recorded the next ten or so years of episodes already and that Ivan Pyne would win the next supreme championship in 2012 or 2013 or something.

Harry Peters - well if someone's deliberately trying to create some sort of myth (also as a joke but more long-running and less explicitly), and then admits to it later (no-one believed it anyway), I don't think it really has much to do with the credibility of the poster as a whole. i.e. I don't think people will find themselves forced to view my other posts in a different light because of this revelation. And also back then in the days of no logging in, you could make each post under a different name, and at that time I didn't really have a fixed "identity" to be credible or otherwise.

My personal posting decline I think happened when everyone started getting too tetchy/idiotic in the main forum (Rob Thomas flouncing etc).
I switched to pretty much making all my posts in The Sanctum because it avoided people getting upset about the jokes and that, and then that got hacked and some people in there got pissy too and so I just virtually stopped posting altogether.

I guess it's mainly because I have little to offer in terms of Countdown chat these days, and off-topic is virtually dead too. Which is odd, there's a decent collection of intelligent people here. I think there's just little point in discussing news stories, because I feel we already automatically know what everybody's stance will be?

My point was that it wasn't just "someone", it was you, but you spent years denying it until I finally wheedled it out of you. And now I'm not clear if you're trying to deny it again or not. Anyway, that's all in the past now, you know I love you really even if I do tease you a bit.

Yes, I agree; it's not that I've stopped posting, it's just that I don't post much on this particular forum so much anymore. Most of the stuff I'm interested in isn't even slightly related to Countdown, so I post it in more appropriate places. Not everyone on c4c wants to read me banging on and on about obscure potential systems of electoral reform, or old computer games, or unusual old bubblegum pop records, etc., so naturally I put that stuff elsewhere.

I'm not sure I did spend years denying it. I didn't admit it but I'm not sure I recall being explicitly asked, but I was happy to admit it in person to you and a few other people. I thought it was quite amusing to keep the myth out there on the internet but you seem insistent on getting the truth out there. But yes, I obviously love you too even though you seem to have stopped going to COLIN.

I'd love to come to COLIN, because I love some of the people that go to COLIN, but I can't be arsed to do all the Countdown-related stuff and there'd be far too many weirdos hanging around that would make my head explode. It wouldn't go well.

Interesting take Adam. By quote-mangling you've made it look like I was the one with multiple identities, when I only ever had one. It was Gevin that had multiple identities (Gevin/Soup/Gavin/Toby/Baron Al d'Cargo etc.). I only ever posted as Jim or Jim B.

And generally it's worth pointing out that I wasn't the only person that ever trolled that forum. It's very easy (and lazy) to assume that all such posts were by me but it is also wrong.

Damnit.
I've noticed quite a lot in the top ten don't post very often.

I'm probably near the top of 'off topic ' posters though

I remember when Gevin first started counting, I think I was about 6000 ahead of him or something. The little prick must be so proud of himself now.

Now that James Robinson has made it to 10,000 posts, I thought I might do a little update on this. Last time I did this (in September 2015 so nearly 5 years ago), there were 39 people on at least 1000 posts. Now we're up to 46. The 7 new entries are Zarte Siempre, Mark James, Johnny Canuck, Thomas Carey, Jennifer Steadman, Peter Mabey and David Williams. James Robinson has gone from 8531 to 10,003 to go from 2nd to 1st (1472 new posts), with Charlie Reams going from 1st to 2nd with only a small increase in posts from 9281 to 9408. However, I think I made the most posts in this period with 3339, going from 5989 to 9328.

A few people have made no posts at all. Michael Wallace remains both in 6th place and on 5458. The others who have not improved their post count are Joseph Bolas, Kai Laddiman, David O'Donnell, Ben Hunter, Derek Hazell, Martin Gardner, Sue Sanders, Lesley Hines and Jospeh Krol, although some have made just 1 post.

1. James Robinson: 10,003
2. Charlie Reams: 9408
3. Gavin Chipper: 9328
4. Jon Corby: 7930
5. Matt Morrison: 7547
6. Michael Wallace: 5458
7. Kirk Bevins: 4923
8. Jon O'Neill: 4243
9. Ben Wilson: 4061
10. Jason Larsen: 3902
11. Marc Meakin: 3732
12. Ryan Taylor: 3661
13. Ian Volante: 3463
14. Phil Reynolds: 3271
15. JimBentley: 2781
16. Dinos Sfyris: 2707
17. Joseph Bolas: 2446
18. Kai Laddiman: 2314
19. Tony Atkins: 2196
20. David O'Donnell: 2010
21. Rhys Benjamin: 2009
22. Howard Somerset: 1955
23. Mark Deeks: 1901
24. Ben Hunter: 1770
25. Graeme Cole: 1640
26. Adam Gillard: 1636

38. Jennifer Steadman: 1177
39. Andy Wilson: 1165
40. Julie T: 1130
41. Andy Platt: 1077
42. Paul Howe: 1068
43. Peter Mabey: 1066
44. Joseph Krol: 1063
=. Jordan F: 1063
46. David Williams: 1020

I don't think it's worth my time looking at visible posts as I did before, but I will look at the last six months again (visible posts only):

1. Gavin Chipper: 379
2. James Robinson: 259
3. Marc Meakin: 189
4. Ian Volante: 68
5. Jon O'Neill: 48
6. Johnny Canuck: 38
7. Ben Wilson: 35

9. Matt Morrison: 32
10. Mark Deeks: 28

21. JackHurst: 8
22. JimBentley: 4 (fallen off a cliff recently, hopefully not literally)
23. Jon Corby: 2
24. Mike Brown: 1
=. Zarte Siempre: 1
=. Andy Platt: 1
=. Paul Howe: 1
28. Michael Wallace: 0
Kirk Bevins: 0
Jason Larsen: 0 (though I think he has a different account now but that's tough luck)
Ryan Taylor: 0
Dinos Sfyris: 0
Joseph Bolas: 0
Kai Laddiman: 0
David O'Donnell: 0
Howard Somerset: 0
Ben Hunter: 0
Derek Hazell: 0
Martin Gardner: 0
Eoin Monaghan: 0
Sue Sanders: 0
Lesley Hines: 0
Andy Wilson: 0
Julie T: 0
Joseph Krol: 0
Jordan F: 0

Last time there were 5 over 100 - this time it's only 3! Only me and James were over 100 both times (first and second in the same order). These obviously aren't the top 46 in terms of posts in the last six months, but just of those who have at least 1000 posts in total. But I will pick a few people who might have posted fairly regularly in the recent past and see how many posts they've done in the last six months.

Martin Peters: 140 (140 posts in total)
Fiona T: 138 (293)
Toby McDonald: 84 (381)
Callum Todd: 70 (436)
Tom S: 69 (882)
Ray Wilding: 59 (550)
L'oisleatch McGraw: 56 (258)
Elliott Mellor: 48 (659)
Howie Myers: 33 (33)
Conor: 32 (470)
Owen Carroll: 13 (657)
Ryan Lam: 13 (231)
Thomas Cappleman: 13 (209)
Jojo Apollo: 10 (775)
FOCAL Countdown: 8 (31)
Innis Carson: 7 (891)
Ian Fitzpatrick: 7 (472)
Fred Mumford: 6 (309)
Bradley Horrocks: 5 (141)
Robert Foster: 5 (32)
Philip Wilson: 4 (569)
Countdown Team: 4 (156)
Dan Byrom: 3 (25)
Keith Bennett: 2 (154)

This wasn't done at all scientifically. I just went through the member list and clicked on names that I thought might be fruitful, but I think it tells us some of the likely candidates to reach 1000 in the future. I left in most of my "mistakes". I think that will probably do for now.

Edit - I meant to include Phil H in that bottom list. 89 posts altogether, 33 in the last six months.

You've done 19 posts in the last 6 months by the way (including that one) so maybe you should have made that list.

You can do it! I might have a look later though.

Edit - But it was just a general thing to see who the main sanctum posters are/were rather than something I was really bothered about the numbers of.

Re: Who posts here?

So what does that tell us? Well, I'm at over 100% again which makes no sense. Am I at over 100% for other people or could it be a user thing? Other people can also check themselves to see if it does the same for them. Mark Deeks tumbles from 23rd position to 31st. I remarked when I first did this that he had the lowest percentage of visible posts at 65.51%. But it's actually higher now at 69.56%. Whereas Ben Wilson has gone from 68.65% to 65.25%. He's now the "worst". And positionally he goes from 9th to 14th, which is proportionally worse than Mark Deeks's drop.

I'll have a look at some of the main still-active invisible-post people and see how many new invisible posts they've made since last time:

Ben Wilson: 379
Jim Bentley: 162
Matt Morrison: 155
Mark Deeks: 153
Jon Corby: 65
Charlie Reams: 45
Jon O'Neill: 45

This is over a nearly five-year period, so these numbers aren't that great. Ben Wilson clearly leads the way though.

On this page, it lists some of the invisible subforums that would account for some people's extra hidden post counts. You can even view the member lists. Obviously the Sanctum isn't listed though, and I wouldn't have expected it to have been. Anyway, there are still people with extra hidden posts who aren't members of any of these subforums and who I wouldn't expect to be members of the Sanctum. Intriguing...

As I type this I'm level with Robbo with 10107. So hitting submit will put me into the lead.

So congratulations to David Coulthard who was the only person to guess 3rd January 2021 for the crossover. Your cheque is in the post!
