People who set their clocks fast. I've never understood anyone who has done this because they all know that it's 5, 10, or whatever minutes fast, which surely defeats the point. If I set my clock 20 minutes fast and it said 7:00, I wouldn't be thinking "it's 7 o'clock", I'd be thinking "it's 6:40" because I'd consciously subtract 20 minutes. My sister has her's about half an hour fast and it's always really bugged me because I fail to see any point to it - she knows it's half an hour fast so she knows that if she needs to leave at 7, it's the same as when her clock says 7:30.

I suppose the thinking is that it makes you think it's later than it is so you get a move on and makes you early for things! But obviously, it's difficult to see someone really managing to fool themselves with such a cheap trick, and even if it works initially, they would get used to e.g. 7:00 = 6:40. However, you could have a clock that's set to randomly go to between 0 and 30 minutes fast during each night. That way you'd have to take it seriously (because it might not be fast at all), and more often than not you'd find yourself with some extra time.

Or you could just get up on time in the mornings.

"Is your phone number...?"

"I don't know. Read it out properly and we'll find out."

If you're talking someone describing themselves I believe the difference lies in eating vs the whole of life.

However, if you're talking on a menu, then yeah generally they are used interchangeably although some places use a more literal version of plant-based - e.g. an Oreo is vegan, but it is not plant-based.

So what are you saying the difference is? That "plant-based" people wear leather shoes and vegan people don't?

I don't think that much thought goes into it to be honest. It's just a stupid pretentious term as far as I'm concerned.

It's not that simple though.

Plus, Matt can be forgiving for thinking they are not plant-based as they give the distinct impression of having been produced in a laboratory using the by-products of some chemistry experiment.

A frequently-quoted and plausible reason why people do this, is that the computation you have to do, e.g. "my clock says 07:23, and I know I set it 14 minutes fast, so the time is 07:09", helps you to remember the time (and the importance of that time with respect to any appointments you may have), so that you don't then look at your clock again a couple of minutes later, having forgotten what time it is.

Interesting, I haven't had this reasoning given before and will concede it at least has some credibility. This is classifying it as something done to improve memory, as opposed to a tool for "making you earlier for things", which I still don't buy in to.

I'd say it sounds pretty unrealistic as a reason why people do it.

It might be that the above reason contributes to people getting up on time, but I doubt anyone goes through that conscious reasoning.

One of my pet subjects is train etiquette.
People who sit next to you on a table seat when there are empty double seats nearby.

People who stand by the door when there are seats available (when I have my bike with me )

Women putting on make up on trains.

People who keep asking me if the toilet is occupied when there are clear indicators to the contrary.
Just because I am sat near the toilet , I am not it's guardian.

People having a full blown row on their phones.

People eating hot food on a train.

Don't mind people putting on makeup (or hot food if it doesn't take the piss) but agree with the others. I'd like to add

- people who are on their own but sit in a bay of 4/6 (can make an exception if the train is super empty) because so many times there's nowhere for us to go when I'm in a group of more than 2, even though there's loads of empty 2s)

-people who play any sound from a device without headphones (music, podcast type shit, children's games etc). Shouldn't care as much as I do but there you are. Probably just cranky cause I'm on at train at 5am with no sleep

This is fine. As a tall person, I want a table seat because I am more comfortable without having to have knees pressed into the seat in front. And of course there are plenty of other reasons to do with the actual table too, e.g. wanting to use a laptop or something.

It is more arbitrary, yes. Bread is more of a staple food generally more of a substantial thing and people often eat things like this heated up.

Marshmallows are just tiny pieces of confectionery. It's like peeling grapes.
