Spoilers for Wednesday February 1st 2012 (Series 66 Game 18)

Post by Jordan F »

While they haven't been particularly high scoring wins, Neil Hewitt does have two wins under his belt so far. Is a third in the works today? Dr. Phil Hammond is still in Dictionary Corner, still attempting to figure out just what his blood pressure actually is. As long as the plums don't make another appearance I think Susie will get through today in one piece.

Join James for a smiley-braised recap served with a side of pancakes later today.

In the last numbers Neil should have added 1 not 2, to make 918 and then had (3-2) to take off, of course.

I enjoyed Nick's explanation of the origin of the name of the humpback whale.
I didn't know why they were called humpbacks, but if I did try and work it out I don't think I ever would have assumed that it was because their backs are humped!

It is, it's an Afrikaans term for cooking meat, I believe.

When I saw the second teaser I was quietly confident that Nick would be one of the few people on TV who can pronounce MISCHIEF correctly, and he didn't let me down. (I even heard someone who claimed to be an English teacher say "mis-cheef" the other day. Why do so many ignorant fuckwits go into teaching, I wonder?)

How is it pronounced? Surely there's only one way. It reads how it looks.

There's certainly only one correct way. But an awful lot of people get it wrong.
It reads how it looks.
Er, no it doesn't.

He pronounces it "mis-chiff" which is correct, as opposed to "mis-cheef" which isn't.

Reminds me of the story where a chap was asked how to pronounce Gateaux (as in cakes ), is it Gato or is it Gatux ?
To which he replied "I don't give a bolo "!

It would certainly be a mischievious act to pronounce it any other way.
