So, we've already reached the last of the quarters, and based on the closeness of these 2 contestants in points and statistics (as you can see below), this could (and should) be the closest of the lot.

Our contenders in this #4 v #5 matchup are the #4 Seed Carl "The Burton Bruiser" Williams and the #5 Seed, our very own Jayne "The Barnt Green Battleaxe" Wisniewski.

Lowest Score: 62 vs. Campbell Ure (5th Game)

Letters Points/Max/%: 505/691 (73%)
Numbers Points/Max/%: 173/237 (73%)
Conundrum Points/Max/%: 30/80 (38%)

Secondly, No.5 Seed Jayne Wisniewski - 8 Wins, 705 Points
Highest Score: 102 vs. Ophelie Humphrey (3rd Game)
Lowest Score: 72 vs. Sydney Martin (4th Game) & Brian Poole (5th Game)
9's Achieved: 2/5
Total Points/Max/%: 705/1004 (70%)

Join Liam (when he can be bothered) for the recap later. ;) :) :D

Have already had words with James about this - it makes me sound like Norah Batty! I might have preferred "Barnt Green Battler"!

I'm sure Liam "can never be fucking bothered" Tiernan probably has something to say about James's nicknaming too!

SHOGUNATE for 9 in the final letters round was missed.

Hard conundrum - I had MARTELLOS which is wrong for two reasons (Big M and a plural), but at least it wasn't American.

I'm guessing a few Apterites got the conundrum but weren't allowed to answer?

If they did, they kept pretty quiet about it. I don't think anyone got it.

Just out of interest did anyone in the audience get the nine in the final letters round?

SHOGUNATE? I think someone mentioned at lunchtime that Adam Gillard spotted it.

Well, it looks like I'm sacked as the official finals nicknamer then :!:

Well played Jayne and Carl (who seems to like reading my recaps if the 29.75 seconds bit in his intro is anything to go by. :D ).

BATTERIE (remembered from round 11 yesterday) and TIEBREAK in round 1, PAEANS in round 7 and QUINOA in round 9.

I got it (after about 35 seconds) when Mike Brown showed it to me during the break in recording that afternoon. So, still nothing to boast about really.

Wow, I'd totally forgotten that guy existed.

What a prick. Did he really just say "go for it Jayne" in that last numbers round? After he so blatantly fudged numbers himself in his first run?

Can't wait for Deeks to mash that cunt tomorrow.

I normally root for the non-apterites over the apterites (because i like the show to be less predictable) but that guy is so irritating that this game was the exception

He also admitted at the start of this game that he didn't have the answer when he buzzed in with THWARTING, as discussed here.

Can someone upload some of these clips. I'm really wanting to join in with the whole group-rage thing going on, but find myself unable to get worked up without having seen the footage myself.

VARMINT as a nice alternative to MINARET and NITRATE in round 12.

Is HANGOUTS hyphenated?
I'm not dead yet. In a rut right now because of stress from work. I'll be back later in S89. I also plan to bring back the Mastergram - if I can find a way to run a timer or clock through pure MediaWiki without having to upload to Vimeo every time.

Yeah, was mentioned in the show, as was VARMINT.

Hard luck Jayne, Carl was in decent form although I was expecting a much closer one. Maybe it was the studio pressure. As well as Carl played, I can't see him getting past Mark.

Remembered BATTERIE from yesterday and I played quite well until the final three rounds when first I missed TOUGHENS and then made a mess of the final numbers game.

I was a bit disappointed that I didn't give him a closer game, especially watching it back and seeing obvious words I'd missed such as dosage and causes (and shogunate!) But for me it was fantastic to be part of the finals, particularly Jeff's last shows, and I met some lovely people so a great experience all round.

Yes. He's a cheat. I actually still found that numbers game (where he blatantly stole his opponent's declaration and made it up on the spot) worse though.

And "off you go Jayne"? Who the fuck does he think he is? Jesus.

I'd like to see Jayne comment on Carl, although having met Jayne she's probably far too nice to say anything! But Carl is pure evil. So rare to find someone like that involved in Countdown.

Only just watched this. Very sorry to see Jayne go out. Was surprised that yet again Carl was allowed to get away with buying time - in the nosegay round he was clearly desperately searching for any 6, not really trying to decide if gonads was risky. I think Jeff has been too tolerant at times. In the end it probably wouldn't have changed the result had Jayne won that round, but you never know - it may have given her some momentum.

However, goodish news perhaps. Was at recordings on Monday (Nicks 3rd, 4th and 5th shows) - no spoilers will be forthcoming, sorry - and in one numbers round a contestant hesitated before giving the solution, and Nick did hurry him up a bit. So maybe they're going to tighten up a bit.

Looking forward to seeing the semis, despite a dickhead called Horace Horlicks posting today's (i.e Wednesday's) result in aptochat at about 3.55 pm. Don't think he'll do that again....
