Spimliminees for Thursday 1st July 2010

Post by Matt Morrison »

Early excitement is building for Ben Hunter's debut on Thursday.

Who'll be in the champion's chair come Thursday?
Who'll be in the champion's chair come Friday?
Who will do a champion come between Thursday and Friday?

From your point of view, Michael, that probably depends on whose it is.

Isn't this some kind of wind up; James said the player doesn't post on the forum which Ben clearly does.

It is a wind-up, Douglas. As I've mentioned on today's spoilers, it's NOT Ben, so I'm sorry to disappoint many people who clearly want to see Ben on the show soon.

It is Ben Hunter, but not under his apterous name of Ben Hunter, which I might add is not his real name.

The guy who it is has made an event on facebook anyway so I don't think he is keeping it secret or anything. I'm sure he wouldn't mind.

Rather than waste starting another spoiler thread, I thought I'd add today's main info to the prelim spoiler thread.

We have yet another new champion in Ryan Loughborough, who doesn't come from Loughborough or attended Loughborough University.

Well, hardly anyone does what their surname suggests do they :?:

I didn't invent Robinson's squash, Ryan doesn't make suits, Scott & John aren't really gillies, etc.

But, will today's challenger, the Apterite, Jonathan Wynn, "wynn" today :?: Or will he have to change his name to Jonathan Looze :?:

I'll be around with the recap later. ;) :) :D

I'm doubly excited about this as it's the first time i'm at home for the afternoon in my new place, which has a telly, so I can watch at 3:25 for the first time in about a year!

Alternative to numbers in round 10 - just do what Ryan did and add 3 and 7. Surprised Rachel didn't notice this.

Really good game. Some top spots from both players and always when the other player missed it. UNBIASED to bring the game back in contention from Ryan was great and PROSOMA from Jonathan was impressive. Sad Jonathan lost though  but fair play to Ryan. Jonathan seemed the much stronger player to me but somehow didn't win :|

Ditto but his consistency lacked...he'd come out with some impressive spots that showed he'd put the effort in (PROSOMA, PAEONIC, TOILETED and FLEAPITS) but then some rounds he missed stuff like BANDIES/UNBIASED etc. Was so hoping you'd get the conundrum too....really hard luck. Those first couple of numbers games were quite hard too but I really thought you'd go 6 small or something in round 14 to try to avoid a crucial conundrum. Oh well.

Yeah. Thought UNBIASED was a tricky one to spot but yes there were rounds were Jonathan's great spots were just neutralised by misses like RADIANT and I thought the first and second numbers games were relatively easy and this should have been capitalised on.

He seemed to smile more whereas you could tell Jonathan started getting nervous as he really wanted to win. Determination and nerves don't mean someone comes across badly - I thought he came across very well.

No, not joking. To a casual viewer they were tricky, but to Jonathan, who has played 1485 games, I did expect him to do it in 30 seconds.

Oh OK. I didn't get 306 until after the time as I didn't realise it was a multiple of 9. I spent too long trying to find a 12 to times the 25 by, or maybe a 13, then considered trying to find 612 and divide it by 2. Similarly with the 2nd numbers game I got it right at the end as I'd tried other normal methods first and failed and decided to go right up to 300.

So I would class these as non-trivial numbers games.

Oh my goodness :!:  :o There was me being so confident when Jonathan got FLEAPITS that it was game, set and match. I also thought he'd get UNBIASED too. Well, that proves me wrong big time. :(

2nd Numbers Alt.: (7 x 100) - ((9 + 6 + 3) x 10) = 520

By the way, did anyone else notice Tim doing his legendary "Pen Behind The Ear" trick in Round 7 :?:

I agree with Kirk. They looked well tricky. I didn't get 306 and it took me well over 20 seconds to get my solution for 520.

ALT NUMBERS SOLUTION!!!

306 = 10 * 25 + 8 * (9 - 3 + 1)

First thing I tried. You're all shit.

Hey folks. I've just finally got round to watching this back. First things first, regarding the pen-tapping (and the silly facial expressions) lol-um what can I say I was excited hehe. Um yeah....oops. Sorry for the big letdown everyone!! Bet yas didn't see that coming-I know I didn't lol.

So yeah-was horrified at the time-obv have had two months to get over it so not soo bad now-least that solves the mystery of why I haven't been on apterous recently :)-hehe might have to go back on the show as my alias 'Ali Jacobs' next......(didnt wanna face q's about my performance on appy but wanted to carry on playing-for reasons which am sure have now become obvious-only Marcus managed to sus it out :) )

Shoulda spotted 'unbiased' tbf, and my numbers were iffy to say the least-but then again, they always have been (despite allegedly teaching 'maths')-I've never heard of 'yardage' and didn't expect Ryan to know 'paeonic' tbf. Anyway to be fair the guy did really well, v fast on the conundrums too, so well done to him.

Newayz, thanks for the commiseratory messages everyone 'tis much appreciated. Enjoy the rest of the series and best of luck to Scott!!

ps particularly looking forward to seeing Edward Mcculagh on the show if he makes it this series....just don't lose your first friggin game like I somehow managed :)

Damn it. Thought so.

Personally I thought Ryan came across much better and was pleased he won.
Oh and thanks for this lol
