Series 83 Player Analysis and Discussion Page (Contains Spoilers)

Post by Tom S »

A bit delayed, but thought I'd do the usual stats analysis of the octochamps (and subsequently finalists) so far in this series:

James Burley...

Current Seed: 1
Wins: 8
Points: 819 (102.4 per game)
Total Maxes 49/120 (40.8%)

Letters Maxes: 30/80 (37.5%)
Badged Words:(7+ length maxes not previously submitted as a max by a contestant on Countdown before at time of broadcast): 1
Medalled Words: (7+ length maxes not previously submitted as a max by a contestant or DC on CD before at time of broadcast): 2
Badged: Flavine
Medalled: Educating, Doubting

Numbers Maxes: 12/32 (37.5%)
6S: 0/3
1L: 8/16 (50%)
2L: 3/7 (42.9%)
3L: 0/1
4L: 1/4 (25%)

Conundrum Maxes: 7/8 (87.5%)
7 Solved, 1 Lost, 0 Unsolved

After a tight 1st game, James progressed with relative ease, including a whopping score of 127 in his 2nd game. I was surprised to see that his letters and numbers % are the same, as I thought that his letters were a strong point in his run. He demonstrated mastery with an excellent 7/8 solved. He's additionally had experience of all of the tougher numbers selections under studio pressure, which will help him out if he encounters said selections in the finals.

Adam Latchford: (these stats exclude his Tie-Break conundrum)

Current Seed: 2
Wins: 8
Points: 732 (91.5 per game)
Total Maxes: 47/120 (39.2%)

Letters Maxes: 25/80 (31.25%)
Badged Words: 1
Medalled Words: 1
B: Stormily
M: Unlooped

Numbers Maxes: 15/32 (46.9%)
6S: 0/3
1L; 4/9 (44.4%)
2L; 11/17 (64.7%)
3L: 0/1
4L: 0/2

Conundrum Maxes (exc. Tie-Break): 7/8 (87.5%)
7 Solved, 0 Lost, 1 Unsolved

Despite being nearly 80 points behind James, Adam's stats are fairly similar to James, demonstrating similar strengths with the conundrums. They've both got a fair bit of time to practise, so would be intrigued to see if Adam can potentially overtake James in terms of their stats...

Coral Heath:

Current Seed: 3
Wins: 8
Points: 717 (89.6 per game)
Total Maxes: 38 /120 (31.6%)

Letters Maxes: 18/80 (22.5%)
Badged Words: N/A
Medalled Words: N/A
B: N/A
M: N/A

Numbers Maxes: 15/32 (46.9%)
6S: 2/2 (100%)
1L: 6/17 (35.3%)
2L: 8/13 (61.5%)
3L: N/A
4L: N/A

Conundrum Maxes: 5/8 (62.5%)
5 Solved, 2 Lost, 1 Unsolved

Statistically, Coral is not that far behind James or Adam, though her letters stats do trail behind a bit compared to the 2 chaps. Nonetheless, she has the joint best numbers stats so far, as well as a 100% record with 6 small. Will be interesting to see how she does should she make the finals (which I'd guess is highly likely)....

Back after a while....
Continuing with Luke Boynton:

Current Seed: 1
Wins: 8
Points: 1032
Total Maxes: 91/120 (75.8%)

Letters Maxes: 62/80 (77.5%)
Badged Words: 9
Medalled Words: 13 (!)
B:Editorial, Pilewort, Dovetail, Meshuga, Melodist, Panforte, Turnsole, Nightcap, Towplane
M: Rodential (joint medal alongside opponent), Ponceaus. Housage, Peonages, Neuronic, Competing, Parengo, Retinula, Insurable, Redingote, Clamoured, Anchorite, Archeon

Numbers Maxes: 22/32 (68.75%)
6S: 2/4 (50%)
1L: 8/14 (57.1%)
2L: 3/3 (100%)
3L: 2/2 (100%)
4L: 7/9 (77.8%)

Conundrum Maxes: 7/8 (87.5%)
7 Solved, 0 Lost, 1 Unsolved

Luke undoubtedly gave a brilliant display overall, even though he had a bit of a scare in his last game. With the current batch of finalists, the stats definitely point in Luke's favour when it comes to predicting the S83 winner. However, despite the points total difference, he has solved the same amount of conundrums as James and Adam, and there is not a particularly large difference between his numbers stats and those of the other octochamps.

Declan McGurk:

Current Seed: 5
Wins: 6
Points: 616
Total Maxes: 33/105 (31.4%)

Letters Maxes: 18 /70 (25.7%)
Badged Words: 1
Medalled Words: N/A
B: Chimeras
M: N/A

Numbers Maxes: 13/28 (46.4%)
6S:N/A
1L:3/8 (37.5%)
2L:6/12 (50%)
3L:2/4 (50%)
4L:2/4 (50%)

Conundrums: 2/7 (28.6%)
2 Solved, 2 Lost, 3 Unsolved

As the current #5, Declan could well end up facing #4 Coral, who beat him in his prelim. This would definitely make for a great match if the stats were to go by. as there is next to nothing between them. However, there was a fair amount of time between when they recorded their shows and finals, so one could have improved more than the other. We shall see!

Tom Vincent:

Current Seed: 6
Wins: 6
Points: 609
Total Maxes: 40/105 (38.1%) (excluding a tie-break conundrum)

Letters Maxes: 25/70 (35.7%)
Badged Words: 1
Medalled Words: 2
B:Ligatures
M:Rodential (joint accolade alongside opponent), Unclose

Numbers Maxes: 13/28 (46.4%)
6S:2/7 (28.6%)
1L:7/14 (50%)
2L:4/6 (66.7%)
3L:0/1
4L:N/A

Conundrums: 2/7 (28.6%) (excluding tie-break)
2 Solved, 3 Lost, 2 Unsolved

Despite playing a game fewer than the octochamps, Tom does better and equal some of the octochamps stats-wise in places. Like Declan, he won 6, and lost to an octochamp, and despite having a fewer points overall, he does better Declan in the Total Maxes department, albeit by 7 additional maxes. As it stands, he could end up facing Adam Latchford in the QF's, which could make for a close match, given that their stats aren't too dissimilar...

Stats for Louis Ross:

Seed:4
Wins: 8
Points: 738 (92.25 per game)
Total Maxes: 51/120 (43.3%)

Letters Maxes: 22/80 (28.8%)
Badged Words: 1
Medalled Words: 2
B:Gluiest
M:Respawns, Coalises

Numbers Maxes: 23/32 (71.9%)
6S: 1/2 (50%)
1L: 19/25 (76%)
2L: 2/4 (50%)
3L: N/A
4L: 1/1 (100%)

Conundrums: 6/8 (75%)
6 Solved, 1 Lost, 1 Unsolved

Due to an erroneous score-counting error, Louis is the #4 when he should technically be #3. However, in the grand scheme of things, I'm sure he'll be happy knowing that he has the best numbers stats out of the finalists this series. He'll face Coral in his quarter-final, and whilst he betters her stats-wise, there isn't much of a difference points-wise between them. Additionally, Coral has more centuries than Louis, which suggests that we could be on for a good game!

Stats for Dave Lomax (or should I say James May with a Yorkshire accent?...)

Seed: 8
Wins: 5
Points: 488 (81.3 per game)
Total Maxes: 18/90 (20%)

Letters Maxes: 10/60 (16.7%)
Badged Words:N/A
Medalled Words:2
B:N/A
M:Outranked, Byeline

Numbers Maxes: 7/24 (29.1%)
6S:0/1
1L:7/16 (43.8%)
2L:0/3
3L:N/A
4L:0/4

Conundrums: 1/6 (16.7%)
1 Solved, 1 Lost, 4 Unsolved

Dave has the unenviable task of facing Luke Boynton in his quarter-final. However, he's the first 5 time winner to qualify for the finals since Mark Decouto, who (as well as having similar stats to Dave) managed to give the #1 seed that year a close run, so perhaps Dave will do the same! Look forward to seeing him back nonetheless- one of the best personalities this series...

I feel that Seed 3 is going to make the final against Luke. If attention had been paid to detail, Louis would have been the Series 83 Runner-Up, but due to a pretty inexcusable administrative error, it will be Adam instead.

Wait - are you saying I'm not second in the all-time ranking list of number of times people have been to the moon?

Exactly. Your over-inflated, unjustified and mathematically challenged sense of worth regarding your lunar landing ranking is ultimately what this is all about - and you know it.
