Susie talked about surnames that are colours. Of which Brown, White and Green seem to be by far the most common ones, with Black not too far behind.
I'd figured that Green as a surname probably came from "green" in the sense of a grassy area, as a description of where the person lives or hails from. Indeed, Wiktionary gives it as: "A topographic name for someone who either lived near a village green, or was just fond of the colour."
Other colour surnames that weren't mentioned include Cherry, Gold, Orange, Silver and Tan. According to OneLook (whose surname data is I think derived from something weird like the 1990 US census) the following are also surnames: Azure, Blue, Copper, Peach, Pink, Purple, Red, Spring, Teal, Violet, Yellow, probably others....
