Susie managed to misread the definition of POUNDAL.
"A unit of force equal to that required to give a mass of one pound an acceleration of one foot per second."
Which is of course nonsense. A foot per second is a unit of speed, not acceleration.

Maybe she saw the end of the definition which says 'per second per second' which, if you're unfamiliar with the units of acceleration, could look like nonsense and she perhaps disregarded it as a dictionary mistake. I think writing it as 'per second squared' looks neater and would have avoided that error.Stewart Gordon wrote: ↑Sat Feb 15, 2020 9:59 pm Susie managed to misread the definition of POUNDAL.

Trouble is the meaning of "per second squared" isn't obvious to someone not familiar with the concept. OTOH, "foot per second per second" is self-explanatory, just as long as it occurs to you to parse it as ((foot per second) per second).Conor wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2020 2:02 pmMaybe she saw the end of the definition which says 'per second per second' which, if you're unfamiliar with the units of acceleration, could look like nonsense and she perhaps disregarded it as a dictionary mistake.
