Spoilers for Wednesday March 30th 2016 (Series 74 Prelim 43)

Post by Tony Atkins »

Sean Cooke now has three wins and if he got enough sleep will be up for getting five more starting with today's show.
And Tim Vine in DC - should be a fun five shows.

With the talk of mediaeval stringed instruments, shame they missed LUTHIER in R4.

R10: "Not much about there...." actually an 8 and a 9.

So that ISE/IZE thing is actually a rule is it? MINORISE is not explicitly listed.

So Susie is now allowing offside goals? MINORISED is NOT in the Oxford Dictionary.

The general conclusion from this thread seems to be that we shouldn't allow an ISE or IZE if they're not specified.

Actually, it's more like whatever is decided on the day goes:

There is no blanket rule that covers this. Not all -ISE can be -IZE, and vice versa. We've never stated that all -ISE can be -IZE.

Yep, had she beat Sean on everything else, she'd have won with 59 points to Sean's 75.
I'm not dead yet. In a rut right now because of stress from work. I'll be back later in S89. I also plan to bring back the Mastergram - if I can find a way to run a timer or clock through pure MediaWiki without having to upload to Vimeo every time.

Well I'm a few days behind at the moment but as there are no posts about the impossible 1st numbers one away solution or recap yet, here's my way to 986:
(100+4) x (75/25+6) + 50, and my way to 839 is (8x100) + ((75+5-2)/2)

So if SULFONE is considered a US spelling, is it another one of those words that's inexplicably allowed on Apterous when really it shouldn't be?

Well that's a weird one because SULFUR is allowed. Sounds like a dictionary inconsistency, which I think we've encountered before with SULPHUR/SULFUR derivatives. And maybe it was decided somewhere that it was best to allow them all.

Edit - maybe the discussions here and here cover it.

http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/defin ... r?q=sulfur

"The traditional British spelling is sulphur and the US spelling is sulfur. In chemistry and other technical uses, however, the -f- spelling is now the standard form for this and related words in British as well as US contexts, and is increasingly used in general contexts as well."

The "and related words" bit suggests to me that SULFONE is fine as a British spelling.

I had SULFATES allowed on TV, for the reason Graeme mentioned. So SULFONE would presumably be allowed too.
