Spoilers for Monday January 13th 2015 (S72 P7)

Post by Jordan F »

We are at our first potential coronation day of the series. Andy Noden started as the first champion of the series, now we'll see if he can become the first octochamp. A score of 90 or more will also put him in the 800 club. If he loses, he'll likely be in the finals anyway, but the win would be nice. Let's see if he gets there.

At least it's not Friday 13th. Hope 13 isn't unlucky for Andy!

PONGEES comes up if you search for it so that's good enough for me whatever Susie says. CONGEE is also a mass noun of course.

PONGEES doesn't come up in search now, and CONGEES is fine thanks to the mass noun food rule, as we've discussed before, I'm sure...........

GENOMES was definitely there though as a nice alternative though. :)

3rd Numbers Alt.: ((75 + 9) x 9) + (7 x (3 - 1)) = 770

If you type in PONGEES it finds the entry for PONGEE.

Very good end to the run for Andy - some more performances like that will give him a great chance in the finals

Have you discussed with OUP what can and can't be inferred in this situation, or are you just guessing?

Some words don't come up when you type in the plural. It's more than a guess. It's really the most sensible way for Countdown to base their rules. The way they do it now is no improvement from when they had the paper dictionaries.

When was TORRIDEST taken out? I thought I had a beater. It used to be in: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKrzS9gdCpo&t=04m39s (should link directly, but if not, skip to 5 mins or thereabouts).

I knew it was taken out a bit ago, although I actually thought that DISTORTER was a genuine 9 there, so I was shocked when it wasn't in..........   :o

Your objectives and Countdown's are somewhat different.

TORRIDEST: having skimmed through the old dictionaries I can find nothing to suggest it should have been allowable at any time in the show's history.

Maybe. But what do you think Countdown's objectives are?

But what should be allowed? It depends on one's objectives!

I would imagine that Team Countdown's primary objective is to continue being paid to produce the show for as long as possible.

Do you remember the days when we used to make helpful comments on here about things that could be improved, invariably sending Damian Eadie into apoplectic rage? I still find that a bit odd, as I'd've thought that having a band of followers interested enough to suggest improvements is something to be welcomed, even if the vast majority of offerings are quietly ignored. What I did take from that episode was that if you're producing a television programme and your powers that be are happy with what you're doing, the one thing you don't do is look to change things.

With the move to the online dictionary, as far as I can remember the single benefit talked about on the show was the ability to bring in new words more quickly, thereby making the programme feel a bit more current. I presume this was in response to comments from viewers. Going the whole way with an online dictionary, effectively ending Susie's role, doesn't seem to be on the agenda, so at this point your objectives and Countdown's part company. Apart from not wanting to alienate viewers with such an obvious change to the look and feel of the show, I suspect they want to maintain Susie's position (in appearance anyway) as the sole arbiter of what is in or out.

I would hope that being faithful to the dictionary of the day forms part of everyone's objectives!
