After 111 prelims, we have the first Quarterfinal of this series. Our first clash of the finalists is between the number 1 seed, Dylan "I'd Say The Power But That'd Be Copyright Infringement" Taylor, versus the number 8 seed Gemma "The Mother of all Competitors" Church. Gemma has improved quite drastically since her run, but Dylan is the all time record holder. We'll see who will make it to the semi final.

Join James for the recap later.

Great set of knockout games in prospect. Is it too late/pointless to say good luck Gemma! Hopefully the hard work on Apterous will help her to at least keep Dylan close

Rachel totally had the hots for Dylan earlier in the series. What we all really want to know is if this went any further at the finals.

Great 4L solve by Dylan.

Oof, he's bottled the max game on an easy conundrum. Hard lucl Dylan, excellent performance though.

Great play by Dylan for a 14 max - shame about the tricky conundrum - and brave try by Gemma.

Excellent performance again from Dylan, great first numbers round. 8-) Well done to Gemma also for making the quarters.

Gemma worked hard on her 4L before the finals, so for Dylan to request for 4L in the first numbers round and then beat her at it with a fantastic solve must have been a real psychological blow to her. A good performance nonetheless, and very impressive stuff from Dylan. A shame about missing that Jen-inspired conundrum though.

Great performance by Dylan and unlucky to get what I thought was a difficult conundrum and miss out on a max game. Great effort, Gemma, you'd have won most games easily with that performance but it would have taken something very special to have beaten Dylan. You've improved your game a lot since your heats and it really showed today.

No spoiler. Just a shit joke. And you're right; let's not drag too much attention away from Gemma. She did brilliantly, and I hope Nick's wish to see her again will be granted.

Hiya,

Thanks everyone - I’m chuffed to just scored points against a player of Dylan’s calibre. It wasn’t quite the whitewash that I (and everyone else) was expecting!!

Brilliantly played by Dylan - and a massive good luck to all those left in the competition. I had to dash off after filming my game so have no idea of the final result, can’t wait to watch!

Also, as some of you are aware, I’m expecting baby number 2 at the start of next year so I’ll be bowing out of all things Countdown during 2014 to concentrate on my new mini person and trying to keep my jewellery business afloat (www.starstealer.com for a shameless plug - and it’s not too late to get a Christmas order in!!).

It was fab to meet all the lovely quarter finalists and thanks to all the apterous bods who’ve helped me improve my game over the last few months. I dread to think what the final score would have been without all your help!

I hope I’ll see you all on the other side and to attend some events in 2015 - if my brain hasn’t completely dissolved to mush by then :)

So au revoir for now - I’ve had a blast!

Gemma "The Mother of all Competitors" Church xxx

((9x8x6)+1+1)/2=167 for R9 - pretty chuffed with that! Though well done Dylan for ending my 179 show winning streak against the TV :P.

Very well done both today, absolutely insane standard! Shame to see you go Gemma but good luck for 2014 onwards :)

Haha, sorry! Mark kindly explained it to me (been out of the show-watching loop for a bit now). Carry on! :)

Gemma is incredibly gracious, Dylan is incredibly good at Countdown and incredibly attractive, and Callum has slotted himself right into C4C incredibly well.

Think I'll need to practice my 4 large numbers after seeing that. Letters were fine but I never saw PINOUT. It's not in the Collins Scrabble Dictionary.

I did (9+1) X (8x2) + 6 + 1. Try to make use of 10s if I can.

I wonder how many of your winning streak you actually lost by presuming you weren't being a fucktard.

Alt 1st numbers: (50/10 x 75) - (6 x (100/25)) = 351 but after 30 seconds.
Didn't get 2nd numbers at all so therefore thought that was an even better solve by Dylan and Gemma!

Gemma, well played today. Playing Dylan is never an easy task and you made a good score against someone who was unbeatable for the first 14 rounds. All the best for 2014, and we all look forward to seeing you at events in the future.

Dylan... good.

All right... very good. :P

Was that 14-10 in maxes? And if so, is that a record for a regular series? Unbelievable standard from both of you, and unlucky Dylan to miss out on the max game. Gemma, you played very well and can certainly hold your head high. Dylan, you lived up to my very high expectations of you as well!

Shame Rachel didn't flirt with you this time (on camera), but we'll see what happens with your semi (pun intended).

I know I'm several years late to this, but I did think this sounded very impressive at the time, and meant to see how far back that went (other than 179 games) but then forgot about it. This game that it the subject of this thread is episode 5833 according to the wiki, so your 179-game run would have been games 5654 to 5832. Episode 5654 was actually the 30th birthday final between Conor Travers and Jack Hurst, so maybe the run started the game after, because that would be quite a game to start with! But even then, it must include the entire next series, including all 11 games of the series winner Giles Hutchings (as well as Andy Platt's games), and then the entire octoruns of series 69, including Glen Webb, Jen Steadman and Dylan Taylor himself, who you finally lost to today. That's quite a run.

And for those who have only watched up to this episode, I won't spoil what happens when James does get on the show.

(By the way, this isn't meant as some sort of sarcastic post doubting your achievement, but I am fascinated by the claim.)

The calculation does not equal 167 either, so that's 10 points he defo didn't get in this game :P

Uhhh.... oops :P I'll have to check my notes when I find my folder with all my old games in next.

As for Gev/Gavin's interest in what I said above, I did (to my knowledge anyways, Elliott's made me cast doubt on not being corrected now) win 179 games straight back when I used to watch it daily. I documented my declarations and scores against each contestant in a folder with a grid similar to the way recaps are done now, however it's at home rather than with me at uni. This was 2013, which was when I was doing best at apterous? I've always weirdly done best against the TV at home. My brain is also far less of a sponge than it used to be as well, I was actually vaguely creative back then. Now I don't ask enough questions anymore.

But I digress. I think I either 13 or 14 maxed that game against Travers. I got all three nines, I definitely didn't get Leviathan, so it's probably more 178. I won about 70-75% of the 30th Birthday championship games against the TV, albeit I think I would usually only play one contestant rather than them both (usually the one I'd assume was stronger).
