Spoilers For Monday November 18th 2013

So, it's the 18th of the month, and appropriately there are just 18 preliminaries left in this series.

Our current champion, Simon Whiteley, knows that becoming an octochamp will certainly guarantee him his place in the finals (as will 7 wins, more or less). Will it be a wonderful week for Whiteley, I wonder :?: :?:

Sir Ranulph Fiennes will be in DC today and tomorrow, before newbie Selina Scott takes over on Wednesday.

Graeme will be recapping later on. ;) :) :D

Yeah, I did the vaguely similar ((50 + 25) x (3 + 3)) + 100 - 2 for that one. :P

HEROICS in round 1, BETAINES in round 2, OCULIST in round 4, LAGOONS in round 8 and PROMOTE in round 12. (All equallers.)

Betaine is a mass noun. Can it be pluralised?

BEAMIEST is another 8 alternative in round 2.

Susie said "Dreamt is one of the only past tenses to take a T". A curious way of phrasing it. I wonder where she learnt that.

STOICAL in the LOCUST round as a DC-equaller, I think. Though Susie said "there's just one seven", so I've probably screwed up.

No, you're right, STOICAL is fine. Just because Susie says there's only one 7, doesn't mean there's only one 7. :P

Susie not 100% correct? This would never have happened when Carol was there. I think someone should tell the Daily Mail.

You mean she should have said something like "one of the few"? That's probably what she MEANT. I think there's quite a few that take a T anyway (like LEARNT which you've just used), although a lot of them don't simply take the T without any modification - SPELT loses an L for example. It seems though that these days people don't tend to use the T past tense that much, even though words like LEARNED and SPELLED sound really annoying to me.

I got that too but didn't notice what Susie said. I think she does that sort of thing from time to time.

Yeah, sorry, just a little humour at Susie's expense. Cheap. I get my phrases mangled on stage sometimes, but I don't get on national TV and c4c smart-arses picking me up for minor slips.

Incidentally, I enjoyed reading Steven Pinker's 'Words and Rules', the book being entirely devoted to irregular v. regular verbs and plurals, and how that relates to how our brains deal with language. The general trend is for irregulars (e.g learnt, leant, meant, dreamt, spelt) to die out in favour of regulars. Interesting theories.

Didn't Gevin just mistakenly assume that your using LEARNT was just coincidence rather than realising it was your actual joke? Or have I misunderstood this whole exchange?
I'm currently going Brian 1 - Gevin 0, with my score yet to be ascertained.

You missed Brian's score. If you DID detect his joke then I'm at a loss as to what Brian suggested you were nit-picking. Currently Gevin 1 - Matt 1 - Brian 0 by my score.

Maybe I wasn't nitpicking? Did it come across that I was because of the sentence "That's probably what she MEANT." with the massive stress on MEANT? I was simply highlighting it as a past tense that ends in T. I'll let you work out the scores.

EDIT

Seems a bit weird to point out the little joke someone made and then make the same joke if you understood that it was a little joke.

Seems a bit weird to try and backtrack when you've been exposed for not understanding a little joke and then making the same joke. But Gevin gonna Gevin.

I understand that this is getting a bit complicated for some people. Let's go through this step by step.
Brian Moore wrote:Susie said "Dreamt is one of the only past tenses to take a T". A curious way of phrasing it. I wonder where she learnt that.
Gavin Chipper wrote:You mean she should have said something like "one of the few"? That's probably what she MEANT.
The original question there was just to clarify the bit Brian meant when he said it was a curious way of phrasing it. I kind of knew anyway, but it was obviously a way into making the rest of my post as well. This started off with joining in with the "add a T" joke, by putting MEANT. It's not that crazy to make the same type of joke as someone else if you see it from the viewpoint of joining in a little game rather than some form of competitive joke competition. But maybe it confused people a bit because it could read a bit like "Of course that's what she MEANT you fucking idiot!"

As for the rest of it:
Gavin Chipper wrote:I think there's quite a few that take a T anyway (like LEARNT which you've just used), although a lot of them don't simply take the T without any modification - SPELT loses an L for example. It seems though that these days people don't tend to use the T past tense that much, even though words like LEARNED and SPELLED sound really annoying to me.
This was a sort of serious bit of the post. Jokes were over and I was pointing out generally that there are quite a few past tenses which take a T, so I used Brian's example. This was a post to everyone of course, not just Brian who obviously knew what he'd written. Although I wrote "you've just used", that's just the way forums work. You're acting like you're talking to someone but also at the same time addressing everyone in the world.

But of course you understood all of this really, but being the troll that you are you decided to post that in the knowledge that I would sit here and explain it.

Since I said she never did it, she's done it several times.
