Inspired by this thread from ages ago...

If we make a graph where the nodes are Countdown contestants and the links are games between those contestants, almost every player is connected to every other player by some degrees of separation. I've not counted co-event games. Besides Richard and Carol, the contestants in the Gotcha episode, and people whose first appearance was in the current series (69), only nine players are not connected to the rest: everyone between Geoff King and Frank Mulvey in Series 53. This was because Frank Mulvey beat five opponents then retired for personal reasons and didn't make the finals.

We need someone to play the role of Kevin Bacon, and who better than someone with the same initials, Kirk Bevins.

How it works: Kirk has a Bevins number of 0. Everyone who has played Kirk in a televised edition of the show has a Bevins number of 1. Anyone who has played any of those people (and doesn't already have a Bevins number) is given a Bevins number of 2. This process continues until everyone who could have a Bevins number has got one. Your Bevins number is the number of steps between you and Kirk Bevins.

Want to find your own Bevins number? Put your name into the Kirkulatorulator! Better still, have a guess at what your Bevins number is, then check to see if it's right.

Remember, it only knows about episodes up to the end of series 68. If you first appeared in series 69 then you might have a Bevins number - perhaps you could work it out from Steve Grimble, who appeared in series 11 and 69. By my reckoning, everyone up to Dylan Taylor's eighth game is connected to Kirk, and probably everyone will be after the S69 finals.

Interestingly, Mike Brown's Bevins path goes via Mike Brown.

The largest Bevins number held by a player is 22. This record is shared by Will Cantrell, Sarah Devlin, Harry Cohen and Andy Watson.

I can do this one! It contains a highly unusual sequence where, after Matthew Shore's Octochamp run ended, none of the next 18 champions reached the series finals. Once you hit Jon Corby, you still have to make several steps to get to Conor and start linking to other series.

Did you appear on Countdown in the last 12 months? Annoyed that your games were too recent so you couldn't find out your Bevins number? Well, now you can.

The Kirkulatorulator is now updated to include all games up to the end of series 70. Literally up to the present day.

You might notice recent finalist Priscilla Munday in the above route. Since her reappearance in series 70, the route between Will Cantrell and John Lomax is now only 35 steps rather than 39. The bit from Conor Travers to Priscilla Munday now goes Conor Travers - Kirk Bevins - John Ashmore - Harold Blythe - Samir Pilica - Priscilla Munday, saving four steps, which means this is no longer the longest shortest path between two contestants.

The new longest shortest path is 37. Series 41 contestant Andy Conner is 37 steps from Will Cantrell, Sarah Devlin, Harry Cohen and Andy Watson.

I have a Bevins Number of 2.

I beat Richard Pay in my series 51 semi-final, and he beat Kirk earlier in the series.

How's this looking now? Any exciting changes?

Also, does the Bacon number allow hops to TV appearances? If so, can we have Bevvons-Bacon numbers? Or more ambitiously, Bevan/Bacon/Erdós numbers?

Hasn't been updated yet for this series, but I'm 11 at the moment thanks to Brendan Duke. With Judy Bursford and her 2 floating around the finals, things could get interesting at the end of this series...

Also the CoC will likely shorten a lot of paths.

Of the CoC contestants, Samir is the lowest on 3, with me and Tracey next on 4. The highest are Jen and Giles on 7, both of whom are playing 6s in the first round.

Another way of looking at it is that everyone apart from those nine players are not connected to the rest. Those nine players are the core group of connection. Maybe you should have a separate thing for Mulvey number.

Could it be a thing to extend this to CO-events too, i.e. if you've played someone in an official event, it counts as the same as playing someone in a TV appearance? I don't even know if there's a consistent set of records for all the events (although I know Ben has detailed results at least). Or does it complicate things too much? If so, just ignore me.

I can easily compile results for every COLIN and issue everyone a badge with an official 'Bevins number' on it. I highly doubt there are any isolated people. I'd love to see the 8 out of 10 cats episodes added as well, which would add a lot of people through this episode.

Incidentally, I just did this, but with Jon '104 games at COLIN' O'Neill as the benchmark. Everybody who's ever been to COLIN (all 181 of them) have a Jono number of 1 or 2 (or 0 for Jono himself). Graeme has the record for most COLIN games played (82) without having faced Jono once.
