What's your Bevins Number?

Inspired by this thread from ages ago...

If we make a graph where the nodes are Countdown contestants and the links are games between those contestants, almost every player is connected to every other player by some degrees of separation. I've not counted co-event games. Besides Richard and Carol, the contestants in the Gotcha episode, and people whose first appearance was in the current series (69), only nine players are not connected to the rest: everyone between Geoff King and Frank Mulvey in Series 53. This was because Frank Mulvey beat five opponents then retired for personal reasons and didn't make the finals.

We need someone to play the role of Kevin Bacon, and who better than someone with the same initials, Kirk Bevins.

How it works: Kirk has a Bevins number of 0. Everyone who has played Kirk in a televised edition of the show has a Bevins number of 1. Anyone who has played any of those people (and doesn't already have a Bevins number) is given a Bevins number of 2. This process continues until everyone who could have a Bevins number has got one. Your Bevins number is the number of steps between you and Kirk Bevins.

Want to find your own Bevins number? Put your name into the Kirkulatorulator! Better still, have a guess at what your Bevins number is, then check to see if it's right.

Remember, it only knows about episodes up to the end of series 68. If you first appeared in series 69 then you might have a Bevins number - perhaps you could work it out from Steve Grimble, who appeared in series 11 and 69. By my reckoning, everyone up to Dylan Taylor's eighth game is connected to Kirk, and probably everyone will be after the S69 finals.

Interestingly, Mike Brown's Bevins path goes via Mike Brown.

The largest Bevins number held by a player is 22. This record is shared by Will Cantrell, Sarah Devlin, Harry Cohen and Andy Watson.

Something like he went out on the night between his two filming sessions, got really, really, really, drunk and ended up getting arrested in Scotland in the early hours of the morning.

If you'd asked me to guess which series those 4 players came from, the actual answer would've been pretty close to bottom of the list.

Neat! Obvious question: which two players are separated by the most steps? (ie longest shortest path)

But obviously you shouldn't even be reading this until you've answered Dave Preece's question in the other thread.

Will Cantrell, Sarah Devlin, Harry Cohen and Andy Watson are all 39 steps from John Lomax and Frank Carmichael.

The paths are all very similar. Here's Will Cantrell to John Lomax...

Will Cantrell played Kate May in Series 54...
... who played Tony Foran in Series 54...
... who played Brian Hart in Series 54...
... who played Ian Graham in Series 54...
... who played Ian Alexander in Series 54...
... who played Sheila Henderson in Series 54...
... who played Paul Henry in Series 54...
... who played Tuck Broadbent in Series 54...
... who played Dan Webster in Series 54...
... who played Ella O'Donnell in Series 54...
... who played David Kyte in Series 54...
... who played Kate Strong in Series 54...
... who played Heather Culpin in Series 54...
... who played Carole Bramwell in Series 54...
... who played Tony Downing in Series 54...
... who played Trevor Hancock in Series 54...
... who played Jan Gates in Series 54...
... who played Helen Shutler in Series 54...
... who played Jon Corby in Series 54...
... who played Matthew Shore in the semi-finals of Series 54...
... who played Conor Travers in the final of Series 54...
... who played Chris Wills in a special episode...
... who played Julian Fell in a special episode...
... who played Mike Brown in the quarter-finals of Series 48...
... who played Joyce Dunkley in Series 48...
... who played Roger Ordish in Series 48...
... who played Dez Hussey in Series 48...
... who played Robert Lee in Series 48...
... who played Tony Bearn in Series 48...
... who played Bryan Thirkell in Series 48...
... who played Priscilla Munday in Series 48...
... who played Michael Clarke in Series 48...
... who played Alex McKenzie in Series 48...
... who played Val Raddon in Series 48...
... who played Dorothy Bailey in Series 48...
... who played Martin Oliver in Series 48...
... who played Paul McGeown in Series 48...
... who played Sassoon Messropian in Series 48...
... who played John Lomax in Series 48.

To anticipate the next question, four players are 20 steps from their furthest player, and, unless you count the nine inhabitants of the remote Isle of Mulvey, nobody is closer to their furthest connected player than that. The four are Jon Corby, Jonathan Coles, Matthew Shore and you. This makes you the four least eccentric Countdowners of all time.

(In other news, my CPU hates you.)

I can do this one! It contains a highly unusual sequence where, after Matthew Shore's Octochamp run ended, none of the next 18 champions reached the series finals. Once you hit Jon Corby, you still have to make several steps to get to Conor and start linking to other series.

Awesome stuff, Graeme! You could also go from me to Jono to Conor to Kirk for 3. I wonder how many other people have alternative routes for their Bevins number, quite a few I'd expect.

Kevin Bacon is only the 370th best example to have the Six degrees to... game named after him.

Harvey Keitel is top of the list with the lowest number of degrees on average.

Who is the Harvey Keitel of Countdown?

If his or her initials are HT, I'll eat my top hat!

Did you appear on Countdown in the last 12 months? Annoyed that your games were too recent so you couldn't find out your Bevins number? Well, now you can.

The Kirkulatorulator is now updated to include all games up to the end of series 70. Literally up to the present day.

(In other news, my CPU hates you.)
You might notice recent finalist Priscilla Munday in the above route. Since her reappearance in series 70, the route between Will Cantrell and John Lomax is now only 35 steps rather than 39. The bit from Conor Travers to Priscilla Munday now goes Conor Travers - Kirk Bevins - John Ashmore - Harold Blythe - Samir Pilica - Priscilla Munday, saving four steps, which means this is no longer the longest shortest path between two contestants.

The new longest shortest path is 37. Series 41 contestant Andy Conner is 37 steps from Will Cantrell, Sarah Devlin, Harry Cohen and Andy Watson.

Will Cantrell... The least-eccentric-Countdowners list has also changed. Aside from the few people connected to Frank Mulvey, no player is fewer than 19 steps from their furthest connected player. There are two people who are exactly 19 steps from their furthest connected player: Helen Shutler, who played two games and is 19 steps from Andy Conner; and Jon Corby, her opponent in her second game, who is 19 steps from Will Cantrell, Sarah Devlin, Harry Cohen and Andy Watson.

Hasn't been updated yet for this series, but I'm 11 at the moment thanks to Brendan Duke. With Judy Bursford and her 2 floating around the finals, things could get interesting at the end of this series...

Could it be a thing to extend this to CO-events too, i.e. if you've played someone in an official event, it counts as the same as playing someone in a TV appearance? I don't even know if there's a consistent set of records for all the events (although I know Ben has detailed results at least). Or does it complicate things too much? If so, just ignore me.

I can easily compile results for every COLIN and issue everyone a badge with an official 'Bevins number' on it. I highly doubt there are any isolated people. I'd love to see the 8 out of 10 cats episodes added as well, which would add a lot of people through this episode.

Incidentally, I just did this, but with Jon '104 games at COLIN' O'Neill as the benchmark. Everybody who's ever been to COLIN (all 181 of them) have a Jono number of 1 or 2 (or 0 for Jono himself). Graeme has the record for most COLIN games played (82) without having faced Jono once.

7 steps - unless Elliott, Dinos or Maggie played returning contestants in S80 that shorten the route?

Thanks Graeme!

Mine is 4

Fiona Titcombe...

played Maggie Barlow in the quarter-finals of Series 80...
... who played Gerry Buckley in Series 80...
... who played Jimmy Gough in Series 60...
... who played Kirk Bevins in the final of Series 60.

The update has found a slightly shorter route...

Eoin Jackson...

played Noel McIlvenny in the quarter-finals of Series 77...
... who played Tom Chafer-Cook in the semi-finals of Series 77...
... who played Martin Smith in Series 77...
... who played David O'Donnell in Series 58...
... who played Chris Davies in the second round of the 30th Birthday Championship...
... who played Kirk Bevins in a special episode.

6 degrees of separation. Living the cliché.

BTW, Dinos is broken due to name changes!

What, still? Yesterday I noticed and fixed a couple of cases where the database thinks someone is two different people, and Dinos was one of them. As far as I can tell that's fixed now, unless you've got a link to a URL that shows more breakage?

All good now. Took me a while to remember to tell you and looks like you were ahead of me. Sorry for confusion!

There appears to be a problem with duplicate names too. For example, David Barnard's route is given as:

David Barnard...
played Ian Williams in Series 67...
... who played Simon Cartwright in Series 46...
... who played Ben Wilson in the quarter-finals of Series 46...
... who played Conor Travers in the preliminary round of the 30th Birthday Championship...
... who played Kirk Bevins in the quarter-finals of the 30th Birthday Championship.

However, the Ian Williams who David played in his sixth game is not the same Ian Williams from Series 46, according to the wiki.

Great job getting this updated, though.
