Countdown Goody Bag

Post by Mark Ivey »

Looks like the goody bag has been updated!

Image

Seems like the board game is gone, while there's now What Made the Crocodile Cry? by Susie and a snazzy Countdown bag.

I should point out a couple of things... first, I can't find an example of the previous goody bag so I may have got some details wrong above. Second, this is the goody bag for a losing challenger while a departing Champion's will be different (obviously the teapot, and maybe an extra item or two).

There's quite a bit of variability in what the goody bag contains I think. I didn't get either the board game or the clock when I was on, but other people before and since me have been given both. Also some people (Oliver Garner springs to mind) were given a different dictionary for some reason.

I've actually been looking up what has been included in Goody Bag's in the past. From what I can tell, all of the following have been included at some point:

- Board Game
- Electronic Game
- Coaster
- Polo shirt
- The Language Report by Susie
- Words of the Year by Susie
- One of the puzzle books
- Spreading the Word
- A larger clock than the one that is provided now
- The ODE on CD-ROM

According to the Apterous page on the subject (which, by the way, badly needs updating), in the past only contestants who didn't win any games got the Oxford Dictionary of English while winners got the Shorter Dictionary of English. I'm almost certain this is no longer in effect, but I can't be 100%.

According to one page, anyone who gets a score of 0 gets a teapot anyway but given it's been years since that happened who knows if they would now.

Of course, anyone who makes it to the quarter-finals or beyond gets some 'kryptonite' regardless of how they do from then on, so I suppose that's kind of a goody bag treat.

I think I was told the CD-ROM was for octochamps only.

Just remembered... back in 1982, female contestants got a little extra something in their goody bags; a super-trendy Countdown headscarf.

Man, you girls were sure spoilt back in the day!

Mine's still in the plastic because I don't have a computer that'll take it.

Actually, I've just read the system requirements properly and it should work on my computer after all.

I just installed it, but when I tried to open it, there was just this error message:

Heh, they probably expected to get it a couple of years ago! Good scam though.

Yep, Damian's getting a new speedboat for Christmas. And they know about the dwarf porn.

Because everyone is desperate to see it (!), here's the Goody Bag given to defeated Champions:

Image

So yeah, pretty much the same but with 100% more teapot. Also, it seems that everyone gets the ODE now regardless of if they've won or not.

Now to wait to see what an Octochamp's Goody Bag yields.

As far as I know there's no such specific thing as an "octochamp's goody bag". They get the same stuff as given to other champions.

Incidentally, mine contained an ODE3, What Made The Crocodile Cry, the little clock, the pen, the mug, the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary in CD form, and the teapot.

Actually, this has got me thinking... what does the pen look like up close? I've never seen what it actually has on it (if anything).

I emailed OUP about this and they said it's a common error that can be fixed with an update and a patch. It's working now! Hooray!

I've included the clock (which has stopped, but was working until fairly recently) as a bonus. Image
