Damian, I know Kate told me the hostess will be a complete unknown, but I still find that odd because a lot of well-known celebrities were in the running!

Now that I think about it, whoever that lady named Althea is would make a great hostess on Countdown!

The best of luck if you decide to apply, Jon, and to anyone else on the forum. Cool! 8-)
If I appied and got the job, no-one would be able to see the letters and numbers - I'm rather wide!

Question then for Damian only:

Because everything is going to change, I don't suppose the "some people only have one shot" rule is going to be lifted for this new series? :P

That's the line that dashed my hopes too. Well that and being average at numbers, not very photo or telegenic, and not possessing any incriminating photos of the production crew.

It doesn't look like we get to vote, but I'd like to register my support for the mighty Kirk Bevins, should he decide to apply.

Alas no, Joseph, unless of course we run out of first-time applicants, in which case it would only be fair to start off with those who have been on before, but perhaps many many years ago.

Right, I've just emailed my application back. I cobbled it together from my past failed applications for Big Brother and X-Factor, so if you could ignore the bits about being "the next Mariah Carey" and "totally crazy but if I've got an issue with someone then I'll just tell them straight out to their face, cos I just don't care", that'd be much appreciated :)

Not 100% sure my maths is up to it but I can recite the alphabet as good as anyone and I'm charming and look good on tv! Plus I'm not that good at the letters so I won't be stepping on DC's toes at all!

Vote Stitcher for countdown! the campaigning starts here!!!

I understand this is hard, but why are you not "lightening up" about this?

By the way, I mean why are you not lightening up about the person being Carol's replacement actually possibly being quite good?

I'm going to apply Damian. But I hope you don't discard my application as soon as you see my name, age or my GCSE maths result!

P.S. In my defence, the test was based on a load of crap that didn't even involve many numbers equations and/or questions! Don't hold it against me ;) .

Carol Vorderman had a crying fit when she announced she was leaving Countdown. Then, she insisted it was all behind her. After that, she will have another crying fit when she tapes her last episode with Des!

Leading into Series 60, if Carol's replacement finds out she is leaving at the end, she will have a crying fit, too!

Just what we don't want!

I see the requirement is for "excellent numeric and literacy skills" (sic) which might suggest a change of role. Also that there is no indication of salary.

But if you haven't already done so, Damian, why not drop a line to Loz Sands? No-one is going to replicate Carol, but I think Loz would be excellent as an assistant. Good at the game, good on TV, and just right as a foil to whoever was the host. And if she really did make knicker elastic for a living, not too expensive! (Though I suspect she probably owns the factory by now.)

I think it would make for a nice change to have a guy doing the numbers and letters (since from the start it's always been women IIRC). Also if the host was female, then it would balance things out to have a guy doing the letters/numbers.

That's very kind, Paul. I am considering applying but I am doing my teacher training year this year. I'm not sure of the rule on applying for a job when I already have one and if I'm allowed to quit my NQT year easily. I'll speak to some people about it unless there are teachers on here that know any better?

That's probably it, Jason. They're worried a male hostess would spend all his time belching and scratching his groin whereas a female could look pretty and knit things for the crew.

I got an automated email back thanking me for my application, and that I should to wait to hear if I get an audition, but then some hours later I received two "could not deliver email" messages. Did anyone else get this? Damian or someone - can you confirm I'm in the pile? (Or at least a pile. Somewhere.)

Ooh Damian, was this as a result of the email i sent to countdown on 31st July suggesting a 'Search for a Carol'? I did say i would like to apply if Countdown considered this (actually what i said was 'i'd like to be first on the list'), but didn't get told it was going to happen. Have applications closed now?

Yes, quite some time ago. The application form was on the website. Several of us c4cers applied, including myself but I think I'm not attractive enough.

But if it's not gonna be me, i'd like to nominate Junaid, i thought his friendly rivalry with Carol was great to watch, his character and charm shone through there.

Before seeing Junaid on the show, i did think the job should go to a woman, not to be sexist, but i think Carol has set a great example for girls/women to pursue careers in mathematics/engineering etc., roles that were not traditionally considered women's jobs.

Haha i just realised though i am now being sexist nominating Junaid, it's about time we women had some resident eyecandy on the show
