Our Rach has been given a chat to a respectable newspaper (well it's not the Daily Mail) about the "upcoming" 500th episode (which it certainly isn't tomorrow, whichever way you look at it.) and her forthcoming marriage amongst other things:

I played Cheryl, Danny's mum, during my octorun. Would it be the first time that 3 generations have been on the show if one of Danny's daughters goes on at some point?

I have nothing to go on but I'm going to just say yes. We need to introduce Saffron to apterous, she could be the only hope for a female series winner.

Well, they were aimed at a 3 year old's comprehension level.

Reminds me of my middle child's 2 year old check by the health visitor. She got him building stuff with wooden bricks, then held up the bridge shape and tried to get him to say "bridge". He got another one, put the 2 together, small ends joined, and said "circle in a square". Should've seen her face! :)

That article wrote:the blockbuster hit was released in 1998 and made $13,740,644 (£8,582,187.63) in it's opening weekend.
Naturally I expected the article to be drivel, but still semi-surprised to see an obvious grammatical error. Don't newspapers employ sub-editors any more?

That's an awesomely accurate $-£ conversion as well. I assume US cinemas only charge whole dollar amounts for tickets, or it was just really lucky that it came to a nice round number. I wonder if that was the exchange rate in 1998 as well that weekend? Fascinating stuff.

Lewd word causes Countdown blushes

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-16627873

They even mention "It is not the first time the word has appeared on the Countdown board" so not quite sure how it is suddenly newsworthy, perhaps piggybacking Nick's newcomer status.

Tbf Auntie describes ERECTION and BASTARDS as being risqué, which is wrong. It's all about context, innit? ;)

I also note that The Scottish Sun is 15 hours behind The Sun. I assume that's because of the time difference.

Awesome. The PDC ought to do one next year...it was great fun. I won the daily prize from Thursday to Sunday as everyone I had won their game so I actually won 2 dartboards and 2 sets of darts on top of the holiday and cash. Sweet.

Did your mate pick certain people with the intention of winning the daily prize, i.e. picking 6 players which would play on day 1 and hoping they'd all win?

Yeah I was tempted but I didn't think he'd win it. Jan Dekker is a class act too and Kist was 11/8 to beat him and I put £8 on and just won the £19. I knew Kist was mint (saw him at the Masters on ESPN) but honestly didn't think he'd win the title. Wish I'd stuck a tenner on him now at 66/1 :(

Bit of froth really, but as articles about Susie Dent are rare, I thought I'd post this. The Times has a paywall, which is suspended for the Jubilee weekend, so I've put a link as well as copying and pasting the article in case it's read later:

http://www.thesundaytimes.co.uk/sto/Mag ... 033555.ece

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Susie Dent, TV wordsmith
The world’s fastest interview: 140 characters max per answer. The Countdown adjudicator’s take on the Queen’s English and slang
Mark Edmonds Published: 13 May 2012

The TV wordsmith Susie Dent TV wordsmith Susie Dent says she is a ‘hugely private’ person

Witter: What’s happening?
SD: I’m writing an article on the Queen’s English.

Is there such a thing as the Queen’s English — or are you talking about gay slang? Polari, I think it’s called...Not Polari. I am looking at how English has changed over the Queen’s 60 years, and how her own has too — especially her pronunciation.

How has it changed? Has she gone downmarket?
She’s become a little more like the rest of us! No more “I’ve lorst thet bleck het.” Instead, her vowels are smoother and rounder.

What’s your vocal background? Turnip-eating? Surrey bumpkin?
How did you know I like turnips? I always end up sounding much posher than I’d like. That’s, yes, a bit of Surrey for you.

Are you on a million pounds a year? That’s what Carol Vorderman used to get...
I just choked on my tea. Sadly, definitely not.

Is it true that you are cagey about your husband? What does he speak?
Who told you that?! Not true. I’m hugely private, but he speaks with a touch of Wiltshire and is very nice.

Hugely private? You’re on TV...
True, but the dictionary is enormous and gives good cover.

Which words do you think should make their way into the OED this year?
I’d always like to bring back the old ones, like “backfriends” and “clapperclaws”, or “nubbling” and “bellytimber”.

Bellytimber?
That is what you need when you’re starving: something to keep you upright.

What is so admirable about lexicographers officially accepting slang into the English language? A bit like Dad-dancing, no?
We don’t include slang to look cool (or nang, or sick). Slang is often what those not “in the know” need to look up — like “Dad-dancing”.
