Add up the numbers...

Post by Peter Thomas »

Has any numbers game been solvable by just adding up all six numbers?

I'm pretty sure they have. I seem to remember at least one 4-large selection where the target was 2 hundred and 50 something.

If you use a probably conservative estimate of the 6 selected numbers adding up to over 100 half the time, it means (as there are 899 possible targets), there's a one in 1798 (we'll call it 1800) chance it will happen in a round. Therefore, I would expect this to happen on average at an approximate rate of once every 450 shows, so about once every 2 years, on average.

A nice variant is to try to achieve the target by simply inserting operators & brackets without rearranging the numbers
e.g. (25-4+6)x(3x5-4)=297
