University Challenge 2012/2013

Post by Thomas Cappleman »

For those who aren't friends with me on Facebook (and those who are don't know when to watch anyway), I'm appearing on the current series of UC. The date to watch is 22nd October - pretty much the last first round match to be shown, and over 7 months since it was filmed. I'm going to be out of the country for the next 2 months, so I'm posting this now, and may not be able to post a reminder nearer the time.

I didn't know that you were going to be on it until I watched it tonight, T-Cap!

Very well played and good luck in the next round (assuming it hasn't been filmed yet).

You did brilliantly and were so cool with all your answers and said everything so modestly...although I can't say the same for your captain, sorry, whose whole persona made me want to punch him in the face.

Well done Tom - I'm sure Tony will be pleased that you got the 'Go' question right!

Yes - good show Tom!

BTW Tom was a junior Go player for Reading School and won a team prize at the British Youth in 2007.

Yep, very good performance. Particularly well done for not getting flustered at the f(x) = x^2 question (which had me confused enough at home, let alone in a studio).

The only question left is... why didn't you play in the ICQ last year?

Missed this one, but found it on YouTube! Brilliant stuff Tom, you were immense in that game. I can't wait for your next one!

The next one's this Monday actually. As Tom's New College takes on St. George's, London. A win for New College guarantees their semi-final place, but if they lose, hope is not lost, but they'd have to win their next game. :D

Another amazing performance, Tom.

A countdowner in the semis two years running (yeah, I'm counting Karran).

Cracking stuff again. I can imagine Tom was gritting his teeth both times St. George's got a set of (very easy) maths bonuses and proceeded to guffaw their way through getting them wrong.

I just hope you don't come up against UCL in the semis, my loyalties will be split!

Sucks that the two unbeaten teams have to play each other in the semis (although I guess they want to delay a rematch until the final). Serious conflict of interests for me, being both a UCL and Cambridge alumnus, but also a big Capplefan.

Gutted for you, Tom, but that was a great run! You were so good throughout the competition and really grabbed my attention with your awesome brainpower! I'm happy UCL went through, but with a tinge of disappointment that it was at your expense. You can be proud of making the semis unbeaten though; I really had a terrific time watching you!

Yep, shame these two teams 'had' to meet in the semis - clearly the best in the series, I think (although upsets can always happen, of course). Tom made more than his share of contributions tonight, but his team didn't quite pick up the slack (and the captain was a touch trigger-happy, but that's understandable). That TOWIE miss must have haunted them for a while, mind.

Unlucky Tom, but very well played - you've have been one of the top players of the series, without a doubt.

Anyone else think that the late-ish maths question was a tad ambiguous? When I first heard it, I misinterpreted the square of x plus y as x^2+y, rather than the correct (x+y)^2. It's quite hard when you can't see the brackets!

Congratulations on what was a fantastic run Thomas, you were great in every episode! :)

I agree with Bob, the Maths question was very dodgy! (and many others have agreed.)
