Next letter in sequence

Post by Kirk Bevins »

What's the next letter in this sequence:

Y S H S R N S #

I think it's to do with people's names, rather than position in the alphabet.

Yes and no, respectively. The title is "name game", hence my clue that it's to do with people. "What letter should appear next in this sequence?" (so that also implies that position is important)

Company names maybe, I doubt any person's name is going to start with a hash.

Ha, that last hashtag was indeed really offputting - I'd presumed it was part of the sequence and what I was thinking was that it was something like a random dictionary's "Word of the Year" or some shit, and to reflect modern trends the last one had a hashtag or something.

The hash symbol, that classic marker of a missing letter which is never ever associated with numbers.

I could guess it was part of the sequence or guess it wasn't, either way would be a guess.
When you said it was something to do with planets, I assumed it was names of moons or something, quite feasible to have a moon called "#102H" or something.

I can give you countless examples where a hash does not represent a number. I didn't wanna put "..." as that means "and so on" or "to infinity" and in this case it didn't apply. It was quite obvious that hash was not part of the sequence as it would have said "what's the next character in the sequence" or something. I was actually going to reply to you when you mentioned "it must be a company as it has a hashtag" or something but then thought better of it as I assumed you were clearly taking the piss. I honestly can't believe I'm explaining myself here.

Two dots might confuse someone as they could just as much be part of a sequence as a hash symbol. At the risk of siding with Kirk, "next letter" would normally imply that they're all letters. If a hash could be part of the sequence, you would ask what the next symbol is.

I think question mark is the only one you can get away with without confusion. A hash is really, really stupid.

Can anyone think of a "next?"-type sequence that would start with letters and then have a question mark as the final preceding clue?
Fuck it, let's throw it open to all symbols.

Also I'd just sent several texts with crossword solutions via text (and online) in the format: C##CK#T. The hash represents a missing letter, not a number.

That's completely different to a sequence and requires no explanation.
I think C!!CK!T, C@@CK@T or even C,.CK;T would also get the right response.

The hint made it very obvious for me. It's M for Made in Heaven. Although the sequence should have been Q Q S A A N J T F H T A T I. The words A and The are still part of the names.

People actually know what the episodes of Star Trek are called? Beyond The One where Picard kinda becomes one of those weird Borg thingies (obviously legit) I wouldn't have a clue.

That's impressive/tragic knowledge (delete as appropriate).

In the series, rather than on screen that is.
