How is it bending the rules when it's specifically in the rules?
Because it's like "100 1 3 4 5 6 --> 101"
And apterous says
"6 + 3 = 9
100 + 1 = 101"
Are you sure? I've never seen that, and I've probably played as much Lockdown numbers as anyone. In fact, I would expect that to be disallowed.

No, it isn't. Multiplying by 1 is using the 1. Making 9 from 6+3 and then ignoring the 9 is not using the 6.

I'm confused. (I've not done today's duel anyway if that makes a difference). But I know in the past (on the first day of Lockdown at least) you could do what Rhys has suggested. Has that loophole been closed?

Yep, long since.

Edit: It seems to have reappeared in Hyperlock. Will investigate.

Basically, I was in the middle of picking a letters round (this happened a few times) and this error came up and sort of made a ghost copy of the apterous game lobby (which I find to be impossible to close without quitting Firefox). The game continues running as normal, but with these screenshot-type things all over the screen.

Error type: java.net.SocketTimeoutException: Read timed out
Update: This seems to be happening every time I log in to apterous (about two minutes after log-in). This helped to ruin my Duel today as by the time I had clicked "OK" four times I had ran out of time to do a numbers solution. My desktop is cluttered with static clones of the game. Please help me to fix this or tell me how to revert to the previous version of Java.

Edit: Now I can't play the game at all. It logs in but none of the buttons respond; not even the ones to resize parts of the window. It's totally non-responsive. Also, a couple of minutes after I closed the various attempts to get the game working, they all came up as clones with the same error message as above. So now I have a constant stream of error messages popping up and I had to quit Firefox to stop them from taking over the world and to get rid of the multiple clones clogging up the screen.

I can confirm that this happened in one of my Hyperlock Numbers games. http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=418549 in Round 10. I meant to do the "4/4" after I calculated the 3248 but this proves that the bug is there.

Still works fine on my Mac, it sounds more like to a firewall or Internet issue. You send to send me a console dump from when the exceptions occurs.

Hmm, not very helpful. Email me the whole lot if you want. Sounds like it's just Apple being useless though. Can you uninstall Java and reinstall the previous version?

I've researched this on Mac forums and you can't revert to a previous version of Java or uninstall Java without doing very fiddly surgery on your computer. Instead, I've made Java 5.0 for a 64-bit CPU the most preferred version to run in Java Preferences (this seems to align with my computer and apterous). I'll work on the console dump now and e-mail it to you.

Edit: Emailed you the console stuff via the aptomail functionality.

And when I got a pencil for this- http://apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=4 ... 9#r5992599 - it said in chat it was just a regular one.

Not a bug, 10 away would be worth no points in Spoilage anyway.

Spoilage is Stepdown scoring for numbers, so 10 away would be worth zero points even if you got it.

When I play Prime or Rex on hyper numbers, there's this really annoying lag at the start of the rounds before the selection comes up. If it's my pick, it's after I've made the choice. This doesn't happen against Prune.

Edit - certainly against Prime anyway. Haven't played Rex as much recently.

Can Spoilage rules be put up somewhere, or is it meant to be a mystery format? The in-game rules tab brings up something that says "Octorock", and Spoilage doesn't appear on this page. (Not sure whether this is a bug, or whether I should request it as a feature...)

Charlie, I've just installed Firefox 4.0 and it's had a remarkable effect on performance. The game loads and plays instantly even when I've just restarted Firefox! I've been online for ages without any errors popping up. This makes sense seeing as they were to do with timing out. So this isn't a bug report, but it follows on from my earlier complaining. Hopefully it's sorted itself out now! I might even try switching off lightweight mode.

Same. Adam - you're on a Mac? I'm on Vista and Firefox 4.0 now loads the game perfectly every time - I always had to resize the window before - and there's a very noticeable improvement in performance. I still lose the very bottom of a line of text / bottom of the "Start climbing" button in the Ascension pop-up, but meh. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder

Firefox 4.0 FTW :)

Just to add to this, I have an ongoing game against Prime that I just can't be bothered to complete. It's not just coincidence that I've played Prime when it's been laggy. I've compared them right next to each other.

Also, is it a bug that Sophie Krol gets the same junior conundrums? Does this happen to everyone?

Yeah I'm on this, sorry for the delay (in both senses).

Not sure, the conundrum system is a bit of a rat's nest. I could probably simplify it a bit now we have more computing power.

One for the stattos - possibly not a bug, I'm not sure:

In Statland, is the new bar chart for Most played variants really showing "Games per month: Number of games played in each variant per month, counting from when that variant was launched"?

It must be some kind of game count divided by time, as Hyperlock is 2nd... at a rate of about 20000 games per month (probably derived from a few hundred games divided by a couple of days).

But Normal variant shows about 150,000 games per month. And since we've only had under 500,000 apterous games (all variants) in total, and apterous has been going over 2 years, surely that can't be right? Is something up with the scale, or have I just been a crap-at-maths dullard here? Apologies if it's the latter.

Oops, it's actually rounds per month.

I'm getting an issue in that I just can't seem to play Apterous anymore!

Every time I go into the lobby and click to accept a challenge, it takes ages to send me into a game. When the screen eventually unfreezes, although I can click to select a vowel or consonant, they never appear on the panel and the screen will then freeze again.

Obviously I'm aware there's probably nothing wrong with the site, but if anyone can help I'd really appreciate it.

James got a silver pencil for SIMCHA but it's not showing up here: http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?ke ... 1899677126

And indeed it says the word isn't pencilled in...

Hardly a bug, but the home page still says 'Bold shows bronze pencils (from ODE games)' under the 'latest pencils' table.

Fixed as part of a bigger thing, but a Silver Bug is yours nevertheless.

(Not sure whether people actually notice this, but anyone who gets thanked for a fix in News always gets a Bug of some description).

Yep, long since.

While we're on pencil-related stuff, does Pencilvania show a combined total of all types of pencil? I've never managed to figure it out. Will it be split into pencil types? It's a bit misleading at the moment, as it says it's for silver pencils (total in circulation: 48) but the leaderboard is obviously not just for silver pencils (as Paul alone has 6043 of the 48 available).

Chatlog pages now occasionally show every entry duplicated. It seems to happen to fairly recent logs only, but I haven't tested it exhaustively. (They are certainly prettier, though)

I think it's an artifact of the conversion process, which will eventually get fixed. If you see any after 19 March 2011 then let me know.

Also, I've just noticed that Edwin Mead had a score of 210 listed under Junior numbers in multitalented numberists. This game.

I've said before that it would be pretty cool if Apterous recognised the first x rounds of a game as a particular format rather than treating a tie-break game as a completely different format. Is this what you've been trying to achieve? If so, keep up the good work! Keep up the good work anyway, obviously. I think everyone would agree that Apterous is totally candles.

Yes, this still isn't fixed. It would be significant hassle to fix it, especially in the way that you want (since it would basically mean that every game has two scores). I'll eventually get to it.

I realise this may be by design rather than a bug, but head-to-head has disappeared. It used to be that you could only access it via the player page but now I can't find it at all. Or I'm really thick. I was thinking as I was looking for it that it would be cool to have under Facts and Figures, so maybe this is a bit of a feature request too.

Anyway, if it's been lost in all the kewl restyling can we have it back please, and if it's been lost by design, er, can we still have it back please?

Cheers

If you go to the player page of the player that you want to see your head-to-head record against, the head-to-head button is right at the top of the buttons. The button is only absent on your own page. Alternatively you can click on the "vs" link on your latest games page.

OK, I'm not going to explain this very well and I'm not even sure it's a bug. I was looking at my format stats this morning and saw this:

Image

I thought it was odd as if there 18 rounds, then shouldn't it be a 15 Rounder+3TB? Anyway, I clicked on the 13/18 to bring up the list of all my 13 max 15 rounders; there was only one from the last 30 days, but it was a 13/15. I did remember a recent game with multiple tiebreak conundrums, so found it: it was this car crash, but I only got 9 maxes in that, and not only that it's classed as a normal 15 rounder, rather than a 15 rounder+3TB.

So does this 13/18 game exist or is it being somehow misreported, or misclassified? And are 15 rounders with multiple tiebreaks now all stored as normal 15 rounders? Or am I being a stupidhead and missing something obvious?

It's all the same bug, which is kinda nightmarish to fix.

For some reason when you click on Head to head with Mr Dog, you can't then quickly select someone else v Mr Dog because the name comes up blank in the thing and he's not listed. So you either have to type in his user number in the URL box or find a game between Mr Dog and the person you want to compare him against.

This is being wrongly stated as a Junior numbers attack. The same thing happened to me and Innis a bit ago and it wasn't showing up as that.

Yet again I go in to do the duel, I click start and wait an age for my computer to stop thrashing. When round 1 finally loads it then crashes bringing up an error message....I then can't redo round 1 and it's been lost.

Here's the log.

There's something weird going on with the emboldening. I'd understood scores were emboldened if they were the correct max, but not if they were an incorrect declaration or below the max. In my Duel game today (it might be Hyper in general, I don't tend to play it very often) several incorrect declarations were bold but some correct maxes weren't. Screen dump available that for obvious reasons I'm not going to upload now, and the obvious reason isn't that I played like a fool. I'll do it tomorrow for clarity :)

Actually, same thing's happened to me for SENHOR. Well spotted that man :)

This does involve me coughing to this completely shit game, so bear with me

You'll notice that r4 is a correct max, but not bold, but that r5/6/9/11 (as Thomas points out) are when they shouldn't be, since they're incorrect declarations. Anyhoo, HTH :)
