Re: Bug reports

Post by Kirk Bevins »

I have just crashed from apterous and when I went back in I can't see anyone typing and nothing happens. I could click resume game with Andrew but when I did that it kicked me out. Checking the chat logs it said "Kirk Bevins has left the room" when actually I was still in the room waiting for the game to pop up. The chat logs show people talking but I see a white screen. Finally an error box is starting to come up now. Here is the console:

As for the chat teaser thing, I haven't been able to reproduce it, but I've added some more debug code so if it happens again I may be able to track it down.

From the "I'm going to read this bit of filler text for once" department:

Don't know if this is a bug so please don't shout at me, Charlie, but ASTRODOME should have MODERATOS alongside it, should it not? (Rank 77th)

Goatmax duels are fun:
apterous.org Happenings wrote: The Daily Duel was won by Dinos Sfyris and Aaron Higgs with a score of 9 from 6.
Also, were we supposed to still get a point for a max after the last letter was revealed? (Not that I'm upset about getting said point.)

When I do CSW Conundrum Attacks I'm getting perfectly good CSW words rejected.

For instance IMPEARLED, BLACKINGS, AEROLITHS etc.

I'm not bothered if there are +s conundrums, just that when I put valid answers in they are accepted.

I offered BODHRAN in the duel and it came up that I'd got a pencil. Checking the game the pencil icon didn't show and on this page it said the pencil hadn't been got yet. I thought that was because the duel was still being played by some and so it doesn't appear, as not to give the game away to others. However, the duel has now ended and it still says the pencil hasn't been obtained and in the review there is still no pencil icon. Think pencils on duels are broken.

Seems that you're right. I got a bronze pencil for ATILT on the recent junior duel but it hasn't been recorded either.

Not really a bug, but it does sort of bug me. ;)

In the happenings, could it say 'his/her first game' etc., rather than just 'his'?
There seems to be a much higher percentage of female players these days.
Sounds clumsy, but presumably easier than asking apterites their gender and programming appropriately.

You already give a gender as part of your profile, don't you? Either yours is set as male, or Charlie's forgotten to alter that text accordingly.

I saw the offending comment (though I could not see the actual rounds) before I did the duel today, so that's not true. Or at least it wasn't true earlier today.

Fairy nuff. Soz. I've just checked my own stuff, and it says 'her'.
It's just I keep seeing 'his' used on the main page against obviously female names. Maybe they didn't bother to tick the appropriate box when joining.

Hi,

For some reason I'm not allowed to win star 29 of the first path (the crazy conundrum one). Happened a few times now. I took a screenshot: http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz10 ... ousbug.jpg

you can just about make it out, but i got the right answer and still got it wrong apparently. (unhappy smiley)

help!

If you read the recap, you'll see that you're pressing Space before typing the answer. " UNMOORING" is different to "UNMOORING". It shouldn't even be possible for you to buzz in with Space, but since you somehow are, it still won't let you get it right.

Not a serious problem, more a peculiarity.

Under Happenings, it's reporting
Apterous wrote:The Daily Duel was won by Chris Davies with a score of 180 from 189. 6 hours ago.
The max for this game was 180, so where did the extra possible 9 points come from?

Daniel Stevanato wrote:It's not working for me either...by the way, is SHITFACE actually in the dictionary :?: :?:
Yup. And so are many words even more pleasant than that one.

There was a bug with Goatdown metamaxes in Stepdown scoring which was fixed during the day, but some of the game had hit the database already.

I can't access chat on the main page while I have a game window open, unless I click on another page first and then back in. It's been like this for months, but I thought it was the same for all trial players.
Edit:changing browsers makes no difference.

The timer is obviously still going because the round will "start" with the clock some of the way round, although the music starts from the beginning, creating a mistmatch. If I'm playing a bullet round, this sometimes means a blank score.
I always have this same problem too. It's particularly annoying when resuming an unfinished game, and the next round is a conundrum. My opponent can often buzz in before I've seen the letters.

I've always assumed this happens becuase my PC runs slowly.
What I've found with this is that it's not just at the start of games per se, but the first round after I enter the Apterous arena. So if I'm playing bullet games, I always play a single 30-second round against Prune to "warm it up" before I play properly. It probably is my computer though, at least in part.

In the numbers games, you will be awarded a max when you are within 5, if the closest possible is within 5. However, if your opponent declares the exact target, then you are not awarded that maximum. Here's an example.

If you are within 5 and the closest possible is within 5 but closer than you, you are not awarded a max. Maybe it looks like a max while you are playing (?) but certainly not afterwards.

No idea why I was labouring under that misapprehension. Thanks for clearing it up.

Kirk claims to have buzzed in in this game with UNABASHED, but realised it was wrong midway through, so hit SPACE. Surely his buzz should still show up?

This has been discussed before, I think. If you buzz with nothing, it doesn't show up in the recap. This was a deliberate decision but I can't remember why I did it. Unless anyone can remember for me, I'll change it.

I can't think of a reason why that would be so. Sure don't display anything other than x and the time, but to not even report the buzz seems weird.

I think pencils are broken again. I got a pencil for MIDTERMS here and it said I got a pencil in the game, but I wasn't awarded one, it doesn't show in the recap and says it is yet to be pencilled in.

The same goes for PALEAE here which should have been awarded a pencil.

Tbf, my first post on the forum was almost identical ('cept I'm in no way witty...) but it seems a little antisocial to be (probably) getting Charlie out of bed following the prescribed instructions. I guess I'll just have to lose rating points tomorrow instead then. 8-)

You could also change your display settings - I'm on 1440 x 900 and the new size window is absolutely perfect, so much so that I'm totally in love with it and by extension even more in love with Charlie, who better watch out at COLIN because my love cannot easily be contained and scenes of an adult nature may ensue.

I've been having problems with rounds not coming up. Just get 'waiting for opponent'. Appears to happen most with 'The Guardian' and mostly with conundrum rounds. I tried going out and in again a few times, no luck. I played a whole game with Waldorf while it was frozen. Main prob is that I can't do another star chart game till it ends.
