Unplayed games in the Open: James Robinson forfeit win vs. Phil Makepeace (whose message about withdrawing took a side trip, but we got it now) Liam Tiernan and Niall Seymour got to one game each in their match before technical difficulties intervened, so that match is a draw.
Notes:
In the Open, this is week 5 of 6, so everyone has two matches left to go.
In the U1000, this is the last normal week -- if you have any missing games now is the time. Next week will be the finals for everyone within one match point of the leader.
In the U1200, this is also the last normal week -- next week you will play your counterpart in the other pool in a placement match. Again, any missing games need to be done by this week.
Meanwhile the U1400 has tied itself in a great big knot. Right now there are five players in This Pool with 4 wins and three players with three wins, so I haven't yet tried to work out all the tiebreaker scenarios. The That Pool is only slightly better off; no matter what happens with the game for this week, there will be one person clear winner at four wins, one person clear last at two wins, and everybody else at three wins. This tiebreaker schedule is posted on the Week 5 page for U1400.

Open Tournament: James Robinson 0 - 2 Jon O'Neill James Robinson 78 - 90 Jon O'NeillJon O'Neill 102 - 85 James Robinson2 brilliant games with Jono here. After taking an early lead in the first one, my 6 small gamble failed to pay off and eventually I capitulated and Jono ran out the easy victor. In the 2nd game, after an even opening and was stuck between AEGISES and ASSEGAI, and surprise, surprise, I went for the illegal one, but after levelling with FIBRED, Jono took the late lead from the last numbers, before just pipping me to DEFERENCE at the conundrum.

Open: Kirk Bevins 2-0 Innis Carson Kirk 120-112 InnisA great contest in the first match, with two nines each and there never being more than 6 points separating us until the final round, in which Kirk beat me to the deceptively tricky conundrum. Kirk 131-98 InnisHe'd warmed up now. We remained level for the first few rounds, until Kirk pulled ahead in R5 by solving a difficult 6-small numbers game, and never looked back from that point on. I did my best to cling on, but he created no opportunities for a comeback, and ultimately scored a max game. Far too good. Very well played mate, cheers for the games.

Open: Stuart Arnot 2 - 0 Henry Meier Henry Meier 104 - 127 Stuart Arnot Henry Meier 85 - 95 Stuart Arnot Two good games. Would have equalled my best score in the first, had I not chickened out on AIRDROMES. Henry was very unlucky to outbuzz me on the crucial conundrum in the second game, because I would have made the same mistake as him had I got there first.

Unlucky Richard, yes you've played much better against me in the past and as you suggested in the game, I thought rustiness on my part through being away would cost me. Thanks for the games.

In the open- Ben Wilson 107-83 David O'DonnellFueled by news that Doddy had only just woken up and had several beers sat next to him, I ploughed straight into it, a slip-up in the second numbers being the only major blip in a solid 13-maxer. David O'Donnell 108-88 Ben WilsonThen things go a little wrong in game 2. Bottling SPORTIF and wrongly risking SONDAGE gives the Irishman a good lead, I nick some points back from the second numbers before going batshit insane, mis-remembering how you spell KALUMPIT (which is scrabble-only anyway) and thinking that as there's no 8 from AEINNRTU it follows there's no 9 from AEINNRSTU results in me getting thoroughly arsed-whipped. David O'Donnell 64-85 Ben WilsonFortunately the form returns just when it's most needed (rounds 7 and 8) and despite a few brainless moments (rounds 10 and 11) and a scary final numbers game, I just about wrap things up to take it 2-1. Cheers David, good luck with your remaining games.

Open Week 5Matt Bayfield 88 - 82 Matthew Tasssier Matthew Tassier 68 - 79 Matt Bayfield This was the apterous equivalent of darts players faffing around repeatedly missing their doubles, and I count myself very lucky to have scraped through. In game 1, I misclicked a numbers game and lost a further 15 points by not risking valid words. In game 2, Matthew had a 23 point lead after round 8 but then had a total nightmare of things, including a numbers misclick of his own. Fortunately I got both crucial conundrums, although I wasn't sure that either solution was a real word. Our round 6 opponents should be aware that we can both play rather better than that.

U1400 tie break thing(?) Lee Simmonds 83 - 96 Michael WallaceSome nasty selections in this one, and another crucial, which I managed to unscramble after giving up on the phoney -NESS slightly before Lee did.
