Apterous Summer Open 2010 Week 1

Post by Andrew Feist »

The first-round matches are posted, with two hours to spare just because:

The Open

The Under 1400 (NOTE: Two rounds each week)

The Under 1200

The Under 1000

Going up a bit should give you the format information for each section as well.

You should send a message to your opponent to schedule a time, either using PM here on the forum or sending e-mail via apterous itself. Weeks run from Monday through Sunday.

Best of luck to everyone!

This is true. I was a little surprised to see the cutoff where it was, but it's a fairly top-heavy field.

Oh right, yeah. MWM mentioned that it was best-of-3 but I hadn't read it anywhere. Sorry.

Open:

Oliver Garner 2:1 Ian Volante

Ian Volante 79 - 109 Oliver Garner
Oliver Garner 84 - 96 Ian Volante

A surprising 12-max to equal my best performance, helped by getting a conundrum I got on telly.

Ian Volante 66 - 119 Oliver Garner

Authority re-established.

Neither of us setting the world on fire I'm afraid, but hey, it's a result. And that's what's important here, right? Incidentally I checked on Lexplorer and was surprised to find that this is only the second time I've had "teariness" disallowed, I thought I'd declared it loads more than that.

I was fractionally late with my CUTIE (I think we all know it's PUTTEE) and never made back the gap - Phil didn't risk SMIRKERS to win it in round 13, but managed the conundrum anyway. Not a bad game, really.

Open:

Edward McCullagh 2 - 1 Jim Bentley

We started our game and Edward rapidly went 27-6 up by using the outrageous strategy of being good and taking advantage of my being shit. Fortunately the server done a reset and the game was gone when we came back, so it was all to play for again!

Jim Bentley 104 - 84 Edward McCullagh

Well, this doesn't seem quite right.

Edward McCullagh 104 - 88 Jim Bentley

More like it.

Edward McCullagh 84 - 69 Jim Bentley

Errrk.

I think it was the right result in the end.

Cheers Scott. As I mentioned in private chat, I really enjoyed the first game. 12 maxes each but my failure to score in 2 of the numbers games did me in.

I never got started in the 2nd game after you began with a couple of words I've never heard of before. Despite this, the highlight for me was holding my own against a recently crowned Octochamp.

Open R1- Kirk 2-0 Ben

Game 1: 109-74
Game 2: 112-91

A couple of agonising misses there from me- particularly the baffling omission of COEDIT*- and near-perfect play from Kirk in game 1 made the inevitable result an eventuality.

Yep, wouldn't have tried either of those dodgy nine-letters if I'd been less than 10 points behind. Brilliant first match performance btw, 1 off max. So, yeah, playing safe would have lost to that kind of form anyway.

The Open - EVERY time I play Karen Pearson it goes to the wire. This one was no different -

Karen Pearson 98-95 Richard Priest
Karen Pearson 71-111 Richard Priest
Karen Pearson 100-117 Richard Priest

I was typing the first conundrum in only to find, to my intense frustration, that Karen had beaten me to it (haunting memories of LATCHWARL at CoLei 08).Thus feeling very fired up, I stormed away to win game 2.In game 3, I only had a slender lead because Karen was unlucky on one of the numbers rounds - I think she had the same as me but misdeclared.I certainly felt the pressure when the conundrum came up, but luckily I recognised it from somewhere before (not on apterous).Unlucky Karen.
