Apterous Summer Open 2010-Last minute registration

Post by Andrew Feist »

It's that time again -- time to hide from the heat and play some apterous instead.

The 2nd annual Apterous Summer Open kicks off June 21, 2010 and runs through August 1, 2010, with three side divisions with eligibility based on rating (one for players rated under 1400, one for players rated under 1200, and one for players rated under 1000). Players can play in any and all sections for which they are eligible. (Eligibility is based on a review of the Apterous ratings for the last week -- more details, and a list of who is eligible for what, is available at the ASO web site.) The main event will be a six-round rating-controlled Swiss-system tournament; the formats for the other sections will be based on turnout.

NEW THIS YEAR:
  • One extra week of games
  • A U1400 section replacing the U800 section
  • The availability of "half-point byes" -- if you know you are going to miss a week during the tournament, then you can arrange to not have a game scheduled for that week (and will be scored as a "draw" for that week). A maximum of two are available.
  • "Weeks" start on Monday morning and end on Sunday night. (The conceit of starting on the first day of summer was too strong to avoid just for this.)
QUESTIONS?
A slightly more in-depth announcement can be found on the Apterous Summer Open web page; if you can't find the answer, then ask me either here in this thread, or via PM.

REGISTRATION:
If you want to register, you can post a note in this thread, or send me a PM, or via e-mail if desired. If you are eligible for one of the "under-" sections, please state which section(s) you wish to register in, or else I will have to ask you, and no one wants that. Any registration that comes in by the end of Friday, June 18 will be accepted. People who wish to register after that cutoff but before the start of the tournament will be accepted on a "making the numbers acceptable" basis.

THANKS for reading and good luck to all participants!

Lloyd: The ratings are based on now (well, recently), and not "game-time" ratings, so I've put you in both the Open and the U1400. If that's not right, then let me know.

Karen: I've put you in the Open; did you want the U1400 as well, or instead of?

Reminder to all: The Apterous Summer Open website has a laboriously-compiled(*) list of who is eligible for each of the sections, so you can check to see which (if any) you qualify for.

(*)Note: Not actually laboriously-compiled, what with SQL and all

My rating has just (very recently) crept above 1400. Does this mean I'm ineligible unless I purposely lose some points? Otherwise I would like to take part.

The eligibility was based on the ratings over the week before registration started, so you are eligible for all the sections. (If you wish to check the lists yourself, the lists of who is eligible for what are available at the ASO website.

Now that Denmark are out of the Apterous World Cup and Scotland aren't involveed in the real World Cup I might as well do something over the summer.
I could sit in front of the telly and support England, but since that isn't going to happen then please put me in for the U1200 section.

How about a Seniors competition next year for the over 50's (that's age not ranking score)?

It's a thought (I have no idea how many people here qualify). If we did it, though, it would probably be "prize for highest finisher" instead of a separate section.

Just a few days left for registration. Currently I have about three dozen in the Open, one dozen each in the U1400 and U1200, and five-twelfths of a dozen in the U1000, so plenty of spots available. If you have already registered and want to make sure I have you in the right place, you can check the ASO website and verify that.

Also, if you are registered in the Open and think you will need to take a half-point bye then get that information in to me as well (I need bye requests for weeks 1, 4, 5, and 6 in by the end of the weekend).

I based the ratings eligibility on the ratings from right before I opened up registration, so things that are happening now can't put you into/take you out of a rating group (this way everybody knows what the basis is, and people can register for a section knowing that they'll be able to play in it without having to worry about keeping their rating down). So I can't put you in the U1200, but I did put you in the U1400.
