Apterous Summer Open FINAL WEEK

Post by Andrew Feist »

The last round of the tournament is beginning.

We've got some extra (unplayed :( ) matches in the U800 section:
(Ian Dent - Ben Ziek)
(Steve Rogers - Gregor Morgan)
(Steve Rogers - Supee Juachan)

and the last set:
Gregor Morgan - Supee Juachan
Steve Rogers - James Leroux
Maxine Silkstone - Ian Dent
Ben Ziek - Adam Dexter

The U1000 will finish with out an extra finals match this week (almost certainly).
First the unplayed game:
(Andy Wilson - James Levison)

Now the regularly scheduled games:
Julie Russell - Andy Wilson
Jason Turner - Niall Seymour
James Hall - Ian Dent
Phil Collinge - James Levison
Shaun Hegarty - Liam Tiernan

And finally, the finals match: Shaun Hegarty has won Pool B, and (barring a meltdown against Ian) James Hall has won Pool A. So once James Hall and Ian Dent have played, and if a meltdown has not occurred, then Shaun Hegarty and James Hall will play the finals match, winner-take-all for the championship.

Grrr, Kirk and I were 12 rounds into our first game, but Apterous doesn't seem to be working at the mo. I hope our game can be retrieved, not least 'cos I was winning! I'll check again at various points throughout the day but am off for now, Kirk.

Looks like a genuine server bug, quite rare these days. I've rebooted the server, not sure if your game will survive, but if you can remember the score then you can just play the last 3 rounds.

David O'Donnell vs Charlie Reams, AKA "Match of the Briersfodder":-

Game 1: David seems a bit off-colour, with an uncharacteristic miss in Round 10 handing me a sizable lead. I go for NEARSHORE in Round 13 while David does not risk it; it sticks and the game is over. Final score: 113-70.

Game 2: Game starts well with both players maxing the first "half"; I take a lead but Dave immediately hits back and is all but unstoppable from there, including the excellent spot EULOGIST. The game is over by Round 14 and David slacks off, allowing me to make the score a flattering 85-94.

Game 3: An excellent decider, with DIAZEPAM and DISHEVEL winners for me and DIAGONAL from both players. David snatches the conundrum but it's too late, as my 13 maxes to his 12 gives me a final score of 110-104 and the match.

Well done David, a fearsome opponent as ever, with the easy numbers really suiting my general numerical incompetence. Thanks also to Andrew for running a complex tournament with consumate ease, it's been great fun.

Me vs. the Higgs

http://apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=95580 cracking start from both of us, then I fall completely to crap in the 3rd half. Me 89-102 Aaron.

http://apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=95591 bit more like it, a niner in round 3 gives me a lead that I maintain all the way. Me 111-84 Aaron.

http://apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=95605 neck and neck all the way but I edge into the lead and go into the conundrum 11 ahead... and promptly get it. Me 102-81 Aaron.

Thanks to Aaron for 3 great games, and to Andrew for a great tournament!

My best ever win, 2-0 against Kirk. I don't usually do match reports but I'll gladly make an exception!

Started with a cracker, both offering fine words throughout such as MAGNOLIA, PETALOID and RIFLEMEN/FILENAME in one round. I pulled ahead with 7 points on a 6 small and SWINDLES (Kirk didn't risk the valid WINDLESS), giving me a 15 point lead with 3 rounds to play. Then the server went down and the game was lost, so we finished it off a day later, with me clinging on for a tight 101-96 win.

Game 2 and I was kicking myself immediately for not risking INTERCOOL, which seemed familiar. However I unexpectedly pulled away with a 10 pointer on the first numbers before Kirk pegged me back with FOLIOSE. I made amends with AMENITIES right after, giving me an unassailable lead, surely. Except this is Kirk and he has denied me so often from these positions that when he declared the beautiful PARVENUS, I was very worried. Luckily for me, some flat rounds followed and an exceptionally easy final numbers ensured the win, with a handsome conundrum to finish off. Final score Junaid Mubeen 112-89 Kirk Bevins.

Cheers for the games, Kirk. I don't think I can win this tourny anyway with my game difference, but to beat Oliver, Damian, Charlie and Kirk makes me very :)

Wilson 2 - 0 Levison

http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=95828 83 - 50
http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=95838 68 - 57

The first was a pretty messy game with plenty of disallowed words. In the end, James' uncharacteristic lack of form on the numbers allowed me the points that saved him regretting handing me what would have otherwise been a crucial conundrum on a plate.

In the second i was pretty lucky. James only slipped on the final numbers due the fact that i declared closer and he wasn't watching when his interface appeared after clawing it back. Had that been a crucial perhaps you would have concentrated on what was a very gettable conundrum. Good fun though, even if it wasn't very pretty and hard luck James.

Wilson 0 - 2 Russell

http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=95846 73 - 74
http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=95857 67 - 75

Straight into this one, raised my game against the lovely recent finalist, but to no avail. Had i had the guts to go for UPTIME in round one and LOUNGEY in round twelve i could have taken it to the third game. Having been lucky in round three of game two and following that with my best spot of the four games in OUTRANGE in round four, i was a too slow on the numbers and allowed Julie back into it, which she turned into a lead with her best spot of the two games, ESOTERIC.

From here i was always on the back foot and my dithering declaration eventually chosen by apterous in round twelve left me missing my chance to come back with QUAKIER to eventually prove Julie's fortune favours the brave philosophy is quite justified, even if round three didn't agree! Thoroughly enjoyable games both and well done Julie.

I'd like to take this opportunity as the competition draws to a close to also thank and congratulate Andrew and can't wait for next year, or perhaps the winter open. The game is suited to bad weather after all!

Carson 2-0 Hurrell

Game 1: http://apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=95922
Game 2: http://apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=95931

Two good games, especially the first one with 25 maxes between the two of us and the game still going either way until very late on. I managed to pull away in the second game thanks to a fluky start, but there was still a decent 21 maxes between us. Have to say I was on an uncharacteristic roll and was lucky it coincided with these games, just 3 points dropped over 2 games is ridiculous for me.

Cheers James, congrats to the overall winner and thanks to Andrew for running all of this so smoothly. It's been great fun.

At some point, I'll get last week's standings updated etc. Really I will (they're done, just not on the web).

EDIT: Yeah, okay, they should be here (not counting U800).

A five-way tie at the top this time around! Of course all cash prizes will be equally split. :D

U1200

Rob Thomas 2-1 Phil Collinge

74-80 http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=96073
95-70 http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=96086
79-77 http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=96109

Yet another crucial con defeat for me. I'm trying to lose count but I think thats 4 out of my last 5 Open games.

Still, Rob played very well at times and they were three very enjoyable games.

Open games between Julie Taylor and Paul Erdunast:

http://apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=96337 Julie 86-78 Paul
close game, with the lead going back and forth, but I managed to secure victory with the crucial conundrum ADVOCATED
despite Paul having 8 maxes to my 6

http://apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=96349 Julie 99-77 Paul
Paul was unlucky in round 6, offering the invalid COILER, having seen RECOIL just too late to input
unusually for me, with 6 small numbers, I triumphed in round 14
so this meant that the Conundrum wasn't crucial, otherwise the 'almost right' WINGBOATS would've been even more annoying for Paul.
I didn't even think of trying SWINGBOAT after.

So, 2-0 to me, in very tight, nail-biting games. Thanks, Paul, well played.

James vs Ian (U1000):
http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=96742
http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=96750
made it one each.
http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=96756
clinched it for me.

Not my best, by quite a way. Plus I really need to make sure I start in round one, not in about round 5 when I'm 20something behind.

Ian, you were a very worthy and thoroughly pleasant opponent, so thanks very much! I was pushed me much further than I expected too, with some darned good words.

Just the final to go now! Thanks again Ian!

The U1000 final was a very close affair, both matches going crucial.
First match Shaun buzzed in really quickly and I thought I'd lost it, only to be handed the chance to take it back again. Only just in time!
http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=97299

Second match was another close affair, with both of us missing things left right and centre as the pressure mounted. Another crucial conundrum, this time noone got it!
http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=97313

So it ended there, with me winning 2 games to 0.

Two great games, with the overall scoreline doing nothing to demonstrate how close the match was!

Thanks for the game Shaun :)

As has Steve Rogers. Sent PM on behalf of Supee a week ago, heard nothing.

Cheers for the games again, Ross. Can't believe PANACHE from the 2nd game is pluralisable. Shurely PANACHES has never been used in a plausible sentence in the history of language ever?

Jay Murphy's hardly been around at a reasonable hour, so we've not yet played.

I'd like to apologise to everyone for not being around for the past few weeks. Unfortunately I have been ill and hospitalised and only came home a few days ago.

Sorry if it messed things up :(

Me and Richard managed to meet up and play our game tonight, they were all exciting matches, and were quite close. I managed to come out on top winning 2-1. It could have went either way, and Richard had some very tough luck at some points. He was a good sport, and I'll happily play him again another time :D

Game 1: Priest 111-78 Hurst
Game 2: Priest 99-107 Hurst
Game 3: Priest 84-96 Hurst

Very late result from the U1000. Apologies on behalf of both of us, we just haven't managed to be on at the same time all week (and James doesn't read his PMs :P )

Phil Collinge 2-0 James Levison

Hi Andrew- sorry I didn't get to play my last game- I wasn't able to go on apterous during much of the week, but because my opponent (Tyron Potts) isn't registered on here I couldn't leave him a pm to arrange a time for a game. Consequently I haven't seen him since we I think played in the other of the two tournaments I was in
