Apterous Summer Open Week 4

Post by Andrew Feist »

The matches in the pool play divisions:
U1000:
Niall Seymour 1-2 Phil Collinge
Shaun Hegarty 2-0 Jason Turner
Andy Wilson - James Levison
Ian Dent 0-2 Julie Russell
Liam Tiernan 1-2 James Hall
(Shaun Hegarty 2-1 Phil Collinge)
Standings and inane chatter for the U1000 are here.
Oh, and because there were some questions: The field is in two pools of five, playing a round-robin; on the week you would normally be scheduled for a bye, you're playing your direct opposite in the other pool. So for instance, Phil and Julie played their crossover match in week 1, because they would normally have started with a bye; Liam and Shaun will play their crossover match in week 5. If the two pool winners played a crossover game as scheduled, then that game was (post facto) the "finals"; if not, then we'll have a separate "finals" match to end the series.

The U800 division has finished the preliminary pool play, and is now in the playoffs. The full standings are
here. The top two from each pool go into the top bracket; the bottom two into the lower bracket. You will play your counterparts in the other pool during weeks 4 and 5; the game between the other qualifier in your pool carries over into your playoff standings. Whoever wins the top bracket, wins the championship; whoever wins the bottom bracket will take the consolation prize of 5th place. Originally-scheduled-but-unplayed matches between people in the same bracket can be made up; those between different playoff brackets can not.
Ian Dent - Ben Ziek
Maxine Silkstone - Adam Dexter
(Ian Dent 2-0 Adam Dexter)
James Leroux 2-0 Gregor Morgan
Steve Rogers - Supee Juachan
(Steve Rogers - Gregor Morgan)

I don't really understand this post, but it's trivial to find them with Head to Head.

But it didn't make any sense to ask why I'd told him about a feature which evidently I hadn't (even entertaining the joke that there was such a feature). Did you mean "why didn't..."?

The joke being that it was (hypothetically) so trivial to look it up that he needn't bother but could leave it for me?

Right, I get it now. Maybe I'm being a bit orty but I find it hard to imagine that anyone would've figured that out.

The 1st game should actually have this link: -

http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=91500.

A close set of games in which Aaron played really well and definitely deserved the decider.

Anyways, it doesn't matter one jot.

Jack Hurst 1 - 2 Andy Kravis

Game 1: http://apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=92641
Game 2: http://apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=92649
Game 3: http://apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=92653

The first game was decided by 2 points (though the conundrum wasn't crucial), and the second and third games each had crucial conundrums. All very close games; well played, Jack.

Good pair of games. Tom Rowell broke my 2-1 or 1-2 trend by beating me outright.

Got myself another chicken with agilities in that one, and the conundrum was atrocious.

Kept thinking I was coming back, but Tom kept pulling away again to take a crucial conundrum that I don't think I would've got.

Unfortunately we're both not available for the rest of the week to play the last game(s). Won't ask for an extension as it would put a strain on the rest of the tournament. I'm happy for Neil to have the overall win since he won the first one fair and square. If you want pretend the 2nd game was same as the first or call it 2-1 or 1-0. Whatever I don't mind.

Thanks Dinos. I would feel bad about getting an automatic win based on that one game though, especially since it was my fault that we couldn't play the other games at the same time. If anyone has a fairer suggestion, feel free to suggest it.
Incidentally, in round 1 of that game I suffered an 'epic end round early fail' as Dinos put it, which was amusing. (Basically I ended the round early which was not the most sensible thing I've ever done).
By the way, giving us an extension wouldn't work either, since I won't be able to get on Apterous until Friday or Saturday next week. I also apologise for any convenience this may cause to my next opponent: can somebody please make sure they see this message, whoever my opponent may be. Thanks.

Great fun games with Junaid, neither of us played exceptionally but still good contests:

Junaid took the first on a crucial, I hit back in the second, and then Junaid wrapped it up with a dominating performance in the third although, in my 10th game of the tournament, I finally got the conundrum!

Final result: Mubeen 2 - 1 Reams. Well played chap.

In the Open:

Henry Meier 2 - 0 Paul Erdunast

http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=94077
http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=94092

Paul gave me the fright of my life in the first game, thought he was going to make the greatest comeback of the tournament. The second game was a far more tense, close affair which could have gone either way. Well played both Paul.

Two games of...well, contrasting quality against Paul Erdunast.

Mark Harrison 67-47 Paul Erdunast

A tight game until round 9, when Paul didn't notice the round come up. I blanked round 11, Paul intending to get a 6. He didn't :D so we kind of failed to resolve it. Anyway, I won by 20.

Mark Harrison 105-98 Paul Erdunast

A fantastic first half, followed by a frankly shocking second half. I always choke when I get near a big score, it's getting embarrassing.

IIRC I was in the room for that one and didn't notice the 9 alert
16/10/2007 - Episode 4460
Dinos Sfyris 76 - 78 Dorian Lidell
Proof that even idiots can get well and truly mainwheeled.

U1000 had an awesome match against Liam:

Liam takes the lead on a pretty rapid crucial. I'd like to say I wasn't far behind him but that wouldn't be true!

I scrape a win to stay in the match. Must confess I was going to make something up when I pressed the "A". Talk about last gasp!

The pressure is on during the decider! I mis-type GOOBERS on the first round, then forget to declare my answer on the first numbers when I've got it exactly. Liam then seems to try to give me all the points I've just thrown away back again, as the profile of the game gets to us. A third crucial conundrum, I'm nowhere, just praying Liam's in the same situation!

Overall: Liam 1 - 2 James.

Thanks again for a really cracking match.
