Frequently Asked Questions - what were yours?
I'm currently in the process of re-writing the FAQ for the apterous site.
Can you guys let me know if there were any questions you had when you first signed up (or indeed, questions you still do have) that it would have been helpful to get the answers to?
I will include any (good) suggestions and you'll be helping out future apterous players.

Re: Frequently Asked Questions - what were yours?
A slightly more serious answer. Well, question.
What do the different types of scoring mean?
Come to think of it I actually never found out the answer to that question.

You'll be pleased to hear that one has been covered and your answer will be online soon!James Hall wrote:What do the different types of scoring mean?
In short - flat (both player score regardless, 9 letters = 9), gevin (9 letters = 9), maxes (1 point for a max per round), winners (1 point for winning contestant per round).

To add to that - unless I've missed it somewhere - an explanation of what the different types of games are, and how they work.
I still haven't figured out some of them - the goaty ones particularly.

Sounds like (from this limited response) I've covered things people want to know about, so that's nice.

Make sure you include how the numbers interface works.

Also, how to set up custom games like just 2 conundrums or something. Also explain how the conundrum works with respect to pressing the first letter stops the clock (after lag) and then you can't delete that first letter but you can delete the others (although you are timed).

I know that part of the fun is working it out as you play it but some explanation of the items in the inventory would be nice! Its something that I asked a lot of people when I started and a lot of new people have asked me on the apterous chat!

Yeah I'd be interested in other people's opinions on this.Barry Evans wrote:I know that part of the fun is working it out as you play it but some explanation of the items in the inventory would be nice! I'm sure about quite a lot of them, but still confused about others, and it seems a lot of the 'old guard' kind of like the way you have to work them out for yourselves over time.
At the moment I'm not planning to reveal the lot of them, but maybe I should? Depends if intrigue is crossing the line into frustration.

Yeh - I thought about this before posting it. It would be nice to have some though! I know a lot of them now but some of the others are fairly frustrating!

At the moment, you've got to e-mail it to Charlie, until he writes a feature letting people do it themselves (IF he does, obviously it'd be open to abuse).John Gillies wrote:How do you upload an image into my player profile? Can't find it anywhere.

Re: Frequently Asked Questions - what were yours?
How about reassuring new players that when the occasional crash causes game windows to freeze or close, they need not be overly concerned. The perceived obligation to adopt an air of profound guilt and responsibility for the momentary quiescence (not to mention the resultant cold sweat and profuse apologies), whilst clearly commendable, can hardly be considered a sine qua non in the pursuit of mutually satisfying gaming experiences.

Re: Frequently Asked Questions - what were yours?
Hi - a daft question to which probably everyone knows the answer except me. While reading the Current Recaps of televised games the recapper (is that a word?) often says "they missed the darren" or some such. What is a "darren"?

Re: Frequently Asked Questions - what were yours?
A darren is the highest scoring word available in a round. It only applies if there is only one possible max word.John Gillies wrote:Hi - a daft question to which probably everyone knows the answer except me. Example from one of my shows:
M X W N U I A F E
The best word available is FAMINE for 6. Since it's the only 6, it's the darren. Although I don't know why it's called darren, though.
