In round 5, I declared ECOTAGE and Jack H declared COMPETE. I'm not sure about the conundrum time (I'd have guessed 2 to 2.5 seconds) but it certainly felt like more than a second. Otherwise thanks for the swift recap, Tony. I'll post some of my own as well as the games I hosted shortly.

Kerry completes a remarkable comeback with a very good solve under pressure. Mike looked in control for most of the game but ends up on the wrong end of a very dramatic and entertaining game. Next up was my game against Kerry.

Round 1: A W E H I D T R E

C1: WREATHED (8)
C2: WHEATIER X
DC: WITHERED (8)
Score: 8–0 (max 8)

A really unlucky start for Tony as even Dylan seemed convinced it was in. I was initially sceptical until Dylan said it was in but Dan (I think) found that it wasn't in.

Round 2: C E R O G E S R O

C1: GROCERS (7)
C2: GROCERS (7)
OT: RESCORE (7)
Score: 15–7 (max 15)

Dylan fishes for RACEGOERS bt with no luck, so Tony gets off the mark.

Round 3: A S Y O D G I E E

C1: GEODESY (7)
C2: GEODESY (7)
Score: 22–14 (max 22)

A fantastic darrenic spot by both players.

Round 4: 50, 100, 25, 4, 9, 8. Target: 300.

Round 5: L U W E T A V N I

C1: UNALIVE (7)

Score: 39–24 (max 39)

Dylan's certainly not UNALIVE as he finds the only seven to strengthen his grip on the game.

Round 6: A T T Q A I L C H

C1: HIATAL (6)
C2: ATTACH (6)
OT: CATTAIL (7)
Score: 45–30 (max 46)

Dylan's max game is off thanks to the unspotted CATTAIL but he's still in control.

Round 7: N I N A S A P F D

C2: PANDAS (6)
OT: PANDANS (7)
Score: 51–36 (max 53)

C1: 106. 100 + 1 + (75 + 50)/25 (10)
C2: 106. 100 + 1 + (75 + 50)/25 (10)
Score: 61–46 (max 63)

Just needing to equal or better Tony in this round to win, Dylan goes about achieving that with four large, as you do. He gets away with it as it's a little bit more challenging than the last one but that's not saying much.

Round 9: D U M P Y N O S E

C1 buzzes on 1.25 seconds to say PSEUDONYM which is correct.
Score: 71–46 (max 73)

Quick as a flash, Dylan unscrambles a tricky conundrum to add to my worries ahead of our meeting next. Tony played well too but playing well isn't enough against the octototal record holder.

C1: POUNDALS (8)

Round 3: R N V R E E I S A

C1: INVERSE (7)
C2: NERVIER (7)

I thought it was MANGANESE at first which is two letters out so when I buzzed in and got it wrong, I thought I'd blown it. I solved it a few seconds later and was convinced Dylan would very soon. I sat there and awaited my fate but as time went on, I became more and more hopeful. When Dylan buzzed late on, I held my breath and he guessed wrong. A very lucky break but you need a bit of luck to do well at these events. I'll take it all day long. Next up for me was Tony.

Score: 6–0 (max 6)

A disastrous start for me here as I write down SONATAS only to realise very late that there's no N. I don't have time to find a backup so I have nothing to declare. A good spot by Tony gives him the lead.

Round 9: S O L A R T A B S

C2 buzzes on 2 seconds to say ALBATROSS which is correct.
Score: 52–61 (max 71)

Luckily I do to make it four wins out of four but this one was very lucky. Tony will rue his misfortune in round 6 and having led for the whole game until the end, he can consider himself unlucky not to win. Not my best performance but I was somehow still unbeaten and had enough points to top the leaderboard. My quarter final opponent would be number eight seed Ben Wilson. The winner of our game would play the winner of Dylan v Rob, who we would be sharing a table with.

So, Jayne was my next match, and even though I had a 100% record on Apterous against her, that hardly means anything in CO-events, and she always gives a good game, so again, I needed an early lead. Didn't get it round 1............

Round 2: E U O D M L S I G

C1: MISLED (6)

OT: MIDSOLE (7)

But, I did get the lead in round 2, even though I was sure there was an 8 there................

C1: astute
C2: LUXATES (7)
OT: LOTUSES (7) SALUTES (7) SOLUTES (7) TALUSES (7) TOUSLES (7)

And another 7 puts me further clear, while both Jayne (and Andy) think there's an extra T in the selection.

Round 4: 75, 50, 9, 3, 7, 7. Target: 326.

C1: 325.
C2: 326. (9 x 50) - 75 - (7 x 7) (10)

I was quite impressed with this method I must say, I'm sure there's easier ways, but I couldn't find one, but my lead was at a good enough distance for me to be in control at halfway. :D

Round 5: N I R A O W D U V

Round 7: E A E C D L M A L

C1: CALLED (6)
C2: MALLEE (6)
OT: ACADEME (7) ALCALDE (7) CADELLE (7)
Score: 19–50 (max 51)

Argh, my max game is gone (although I thought it was gone in round 2, but hey-ho), but it's 2 out of 2 for me, and now it's time to bump up my score. :)

Round 8: 25, 6, 2, 4, 10, 8. Target: 604.

C1: 604. (6 x 4 x 25) + (8 / 2) (10)
C2: 604. (6 x 4 x 25) + (8 / 2) (10)
Score: 29–60 (max 61)

A nice and easy numbers gives me and Jayne some points, but I could definitely use the extra points for the leaderboard.

Round 9: D I M E B U T T S

C2 buzzes on 2 seconds to say SUBMITTED which is correct.
Final Score: 29–70 (max 71)

And luckily, I get it nice and quickly, so it's 141 points from 2 games, and 2 potential banana skins are safely avoided. :D

But, with winning 2 games comes the consequences..............., more on that later. 8-)
