Co:Leam - 28th September 2013

by Andy Platt
Hosts
Me & Dan McColm

Location
St Patrick's Club, Leamington Spa, CV32 5AH - a great neutral location, smack in the centre of England, with very favourable accessibility:-
- Travelling by train? Location is within walking distance from the main train station. We can provide more details upon request, or you can get Google to do your dirty work for you.
- Driving instead? There is a reasonable car park (albeit paid) just outside the venue, and after a quick Google maps search there are seemingly a few further places within a few hundred yards where you can apparently park for free.

Schedule
Me and Dan will be there from about 09:00 or 09:30, so feel free to come in from that time. The draw for round 1 will start at 10:40, with the first round beginning at 11:00. Lunch will be from 12:15 to 13:00, and then the rest of the games will run through to about 18:10, when the prizes will be given out, so we should be all done by about 18:45. There will be a local band playing downstairs from about 7pm onwards, so that might be cool, or we can just hit the Wetherspoons down the road if the music / drinks prices / atmosphere in the Irish bar aren't the greatest.

Format
- Prelims to be Lincoln style (ie divided into groups of three, and each round will consist of one game hosting and two games playing) - everyone will play four 9-rounders, which will be seeded in a similar way to the Lincoln tournament - first group of games will see an A player, a B player, and a C player on each particular table.
- There will be a knockout section after those initial four games, and players will be ranked by wins then points, as is the norm (NB we were going to do raw score for the sake of fairness but that seems to create more problems than it solves). Players are then separated into A, B and C sections. The A and B section will have 8 players who will play 15-rounders, with the rest of the players to go into the C section and provisionally play 9-rounders (unless there are exactly 24 people for the event, when we can again obviously have 15-rounders).

Cool, the final is going to be hyper unlimited Finnish goatblitz, so hope you're all OK with that.

Maybe you should get up 10 minutes earlier, so that you have time to wash your hair before the event.

Or go to bed 10 minutes later.

Gutted! We're at a wedding that day. This would have been my closest Co-event yet! :-(

I'm in for this. I went to Warwick university and lived in Leamington for my last two years there, so will be nice to go back.

Slight update on the info there. There's been a bit of interest for Edinburgh recently, would be nice to see the same here, although obviously that's a more established event.

You can put me down as a provisional for this. I didn't think it would be possible to get there and back in a day given the timings but I have checked trains and it seems that it is possible so I will likely be there.

Cheers for the interest, Andy. Let us know if your partner wants to play too.

As a general side note, I think it might be worth us setting up a facebook event soon.

I just realised, that I haven't actually said on here - put me down as a provisional - would really like to try and find a cheaper hotel though =/

I'm struggling to find good deals on hotels too for this. I think personally I'm meant to be staying at Chez McColm but I'm trying to put in the effort for others.

Travelodge looks massively expensive for some reason ... Kayak also not exactly great ... Booking.com not wonderful, but some OK deals for shared rooms. I would recommend finding a room for two as they seem to be the good deals I guess.

Also as a side note I had a nice look on and off over the last hour to see if any interesting events were going down in Leamington that weekend for the night out, and literally all I could find was this event, which I think we can pass on to be honest. Sorry Zarte.

That event was in 2011. It's down as having passed, so that's one less thing to worry about :P

Thought I'd politely hold back until Huddersfield was out the way before doing this - entries are now open for Leamington!

£107 for 2 nights. It's a newly converted hotel (#1 on Trip Advisor list) quite close to the venue. Although I booked as 1 adult, I was allocated a family room. I therefore guess they are on the point of being fully booked.

I'm now planning to take advantage of the family room by bringing my wife Julie and 2 youngest daughters on the trip. They'll do their own thing whilst I'm at the tourney and meet up with us later.

Cheers guys, added you to the provisional list.

If a few more in the list could pay sometime soon that would be swell as then we can order the trophies. Fanks

8 people now paid; James Robinson, Jeff Clayton, Phil Jarvis, Ben Wilson, Thomas Cappleman, Graeme Cole, Catriona Cappleman, Andy McGurn.

Trophies to be ordered shortly. Anyone else? :)

Edit: Cheers Mike Brown.

PS for the sake of efficiency I'll keep editing the post at the top, rather than this one, with people that have paid

I'm going to the USA for a couple of weeks but will try and check up on entries. Don't panic if you pay and then I haven't said I've received it for a while.

Also, if we could have payments for entries in by the 25th that would be great, as we only plan on taking entries after that point if we haven't reached 24.

Despite having said on two previous occasions that I would be unable to attend due to unmeetable travel prices, I've checked again and found a train journey that has either been newly added to the timetable or had its price reduced, as it might be affordable for me. It's dependent on whether or not I'll be able to get to Leeds train station at 6am in the morning, but I might well be able to make it.

Are you still taking new entries?

Where are you travelling from? I've just checked from York (and I would get the same train, 616, from Leeds) and it's quite cheap, even without a railcard! However, I'm sadly booked on this day.

Get your priorities right Kirk :P (he says while browsing c4c in Las Vegas).

15 in now, could do with a few more confirmations as it is only two weeks away now.

Travelling from Leeds. Last time I checked the cheapest train was £26, and the cheapest train back was £28. Now I can probably get there and back for under £30 with a railcard. I'll see you all in Leamington :)

Why did you change away from raw scores?

Re: Co:Leam - 28th September 2013

Posted: Fri Sep 20, 2013 2:33 pm
by Andy Platt
A) It was more complicated and needed more effort on our part with the spreadsheet

B) Numbers rounds would be frustrating and long winded because the player who lost that round would need to prove they had what they declared even after the round has already been lost.

C) Graeme's results ticker which we will be utilising wouldn't have handled raw scores.

Good enough reasons.

In other news, the club claims to have a pool table. Booya.

Cool. A live band also starts downstairs about half an hour or so after our presentations should be done.

Now in other news, the Cullens have pulled out so we are looking at 23 entrants at the minute. As 24 would be ideal bearing in mind the format, Dan and I have made the decision to close entries after the next entrant pays. Just need one. Please :)

Edit: possibly more late interest than we anticipated so we might have to go back on 24

I assumed I wasn't going to get paid tomorrow and also that I wouldn't be able to afford it. I found out only today that there's a good chance that I WILL get paid tomorrow and also I've had an unexpected pay rise which means if I do get paid then I WILL be able to afford it........

Is letting you know tomorrow too late? If it really would be a pain I don't mind too much as I've literally just this second realised I might actually be able to go after all.................................sorry sorry sorry

For those of you not in the know, today's final was won by Jack Worsley, who defeated Jack Hurst 112-95 in the final.

Dylan beat Greame in the 3rd place play-off, also on a crucial I believe.

Zarte beat Tom Cappleman to win Group B, and Callum Todd (on his CO-event début) defeated Mike Brown in the Group C final.

More later, I'm sure. ;) :) :D  8-)
