COOT Quarters - Damian Eadie vs Jason Cullen recap 8/7/08

Post by JasonCullen »

C1: Seed - Damian Eadie - a past series Countdown champion and current Countdown producer at YTV
C2: Qualifier - Jason Cullen - a four-time Countdown champion from Bolton in series 57/58
Host: Paul Howe

On paper, there can only be one winner. The Countdown credentials of Damian undermine the minor achievements by his opponent Jason and highlight the gulf in class between the players. Damian breezed through his last COOT game whereas Jason caused a mini upset in the last round by winning 112-109 on a crucial conundrum against a seeded player. Will lightning strike twice for Jason?

What a bizarre end to a rather bizarre match! Both players were below their best and mistakes were made left, right and centre. Damian had two words disallowed as opposed to Jason's one but, Jason made a big mistake on the first numbers when he declared one-away when, actually, he could have got the 533 target bang on! The comedy of errors was completed when both players declared the 10-letter word FRUSTRATED for the usual 9-letter conundrum - a mistake that has never ever been made by either of the two contestants! This error was to the embarrassment of Damian and Jason but to the delight of some amused spectators!

But, overall, it was a thoroughly deserved victory for Damian and I wish him all the best for the COOT semi-finals. Meanwhile, Jason bows out of the competition with just the memories!
