Have to add my name to the chorus of approval. Another great CO-event; thoroughly enjoyed it. As per usual, it was great to meet old friends and to see lots of new faces - and also what must be the largest number of females ever at one of these! Thanks to Jeff for the organisation, well done to Jono for winning and of course commiserations to Kirk for yet another second place. Roll on COLIN!

Fantastic event... a credit to Jeff and all who helped with the organisation, and also to the c4c/Countdown community at large. See you at the next one... ;-)

And to Dinos and Ben, who just missed the final due to inferior points total, I can only apologise for not taking more points off of Kirk and Jono! Yes, the random number generator paired me against each of them in the preliminary rounds... and although I was soundly beaten on both occasions, I'm claiming some personal pride for winning one letters round in each game...

(Oh, and to those who got DILDO in round one of game three, there was also BONERS in round two...)

Many thanks for your kind words and thumbs up.

I appreciate that some of you felt a little hard done by with the pairings - I take the comments on board and will aim to give the whole thing some more structure next time, provided of course you'll come back!

Full results and photos from my camera (thanks to Bee) will follow during the week - some pictures are already floating around on Facebook.

Cheers

Look forward to seeing the photos, thanks again, Jeff! :D

I can't speak for others, of course, but personally I wasn't complaining about playing a game against Kirk. Like my game against Jono in CoLin, it was an honour. I think that most of us were paired with one of the greats at some point, so I reckon it all evens out.

Yes, it would be possible, maybe, after the qualifying game, to split us into 2 separate divisions. But IMHO part of the fun of these events is playing against outstanding Countdowners. I'm happy to go with the consensus, though, in future events, and love just taking part, however the games are arranged. :)

Oh, and congratulations, I forgot to mention before, to Kirk and Jono for such a close final. Well done to Jono, and commisersations to Kirk for losing by just a few points.

Thanks again Jeff, It was great to see everyone and be involved in some really exciting and close games - the latter does not apply to the one where I was unable to keep up with Jack; watch out for him on the show in the future! Looking forward to Lincoln already.

Thanks Matt. :)

So apart from the people I recognise, who's in this pic...

Image

...the people I recognise being Dinos, Kai, Jono, Charlie, Neb, Kirk, Rich Priest, Mike Brown, Julie T and Mark Tournoff - plus I'm guessing that the guy in the centre in the brown jumper is Jeff Clayton?

I'm using Facebook tags largely to dissect this (and ignoring Alec and Kai for the sake of completion).

Anna Woodward on the left in front of Dinos.
Alec in the white t-shirt bottom left.
Sid is not in there I don't think (Sorry, Kai).
The guy who is almost entirely obscured is Darren (Cartier).
The lady in front centre is Jeff's girlfriend.
Indeed, that's Jeff looking all pleased at the front.
Jack Hurst is wearing the blue jumper with the white polo underneath.
His brother Josh is just behind him, to our right (to Jack's left).
In front of Josh is Tournoff in a red jumper, and apterite Steve Wood in the jean jacket.
And over Jack's other shoulder (his right, our left) is Matt Bayfield.

Think that's everyone covered. Thanks Charlie.

.
The Steve Wood that was here apparently isn't the same one as that went on the show. The one that went on the show is the one on apterous.

I am in the picture, technically. You can just about see part of my shoulder as I'm standing to Mark Tournoff's left.

Just to clarify, Steve Wood & I are the other way round to Matt's summary above. I'm in the jean jacket and blue hat. Steve is brown hair, red t-shirt, back row, to the left of and behind Jack.

Kai had it the correct way round.

Thanks everyone. :) So the only mystery now is: if the Steve Wood who was there isn't the one on Apterous, and he isn't a forumite... how did he find out about the event?

He probably knew somebody who was there, like Gerry and Paul Atkinson did, who I believe were friends of Jeff.

Also, that Facebook Events listing was open to any Facebook member to see, so people could show their interest that way too.

Cheers Matt. I'm gonna be a big man and take absolutely no responsibility and blame that 100% on Charlie.
I did wonder if he'd got it right when he told me as I remember you had a hat on in your previous avatar, but I didn't question him.
Turns out Charlie is just a pretty face after all then. Oh, hang on...

I only wear a hat so that people on this forum might think I have hair... ;-)

Underneath the hat I am delightfully stubbly.

I deliberately set the qualifier rounds without a niner, and with good selections of sevens and eights - some less obvious than others - along with some numbers that would show contestants' skills, and it produced a high standard of results. Charlie notched up an impressive 93.97% of the available maximum with Kirk and Jon just a smidgeon behind; the top five scored in excess of 90% of the available maximum; thirteen players achieved upwards of 80%.

Game 4 (exhibition - 1st/2nd)

C1: Champion Jon O'Neill (3 wins)
C2: Champion Kirk Bevins (3 wins)
DC: Charlie Reams and Simon Myers.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Jon O'Neill graced our screens with his presence in April 2005 (series 53) and racked up a total of 804 from his octochamp run. He progressed to the semi-finals where he lost to John Mayhew by a single point. On the tournament circuit, Jon was the runner up at CoLin 2008 and is looking for his first CoLei victory today.

Kirk Bevins appeared on the show in March 2009 (series 60) and amassed a then record 925 points from his eight games in the heats - notably, scoring a maximum 126 from his third match against Ben Nicholas. Kirk has never won a Co- tournament and was the runner-up to Mark Tournoff at CoLei last year, so he is equally hungry for victory in our final today.

Ladies and gentlemen, Jon O'Neill and Kirk Bevins.

So not a crucial conundrum, but ten very well deserved points that bring the scores back oh-so-close. But we have a winner - and with a fine century, the champion of Countdown in Leicester 2009 is Mr. Jon O'Neill!

This conundrum also has two solutions, LAVATIONS is the other. It's worth checking before setting conundrums that they are unique or at least give the alternative answer in the scramble.

Excellent post though, Jeff. Cheers.
