Proposal to run another CoLei (Leicester)

Post by Jeff Clayton »

Ladies and gents

Having discussed the matter with some of the class of 2008, it is my intention to run another tournament in Leicester this year.

I am aiming for late September / early October - supposedly a quieter time in the Countdown and Scrabble seasons, everyone's back off holiday and no students should have any major exams.

The venue would once again be The Stoneycroft Hotel - see the full thread details here.

The entry fee would be pitched at around £8 per head.

Through your reply button, can I have a show of hands as to who would be interested please. This is also an opportunity to air any questions / suggestions / requests / preferences etc.

TIA

I'd be interested in taking part.

I probably wouldn't be able to make the weekend of Sat 3/Sun 4 October, but apart from that, the general timing of late Sep/early Oct sounds good.

Would get absolutely hammered by everyone, but would still love to come.

I can't make September 26th though.

Seeing as I'd probably be staying over, I'd like some drinking buddies too.

Actually, as it's in a hotel, can we get pissed while we play? :)

Count me in (although I can't do 3rd/4th Oct either).

Adding in alcohol is a great idea. Sadly, I'll be driving but, as Rich Priest will tell you, I play much better after a glass of wine!

Nice to see there will be another girlie there. Hurray!

Was it a rosé during the lunch break last year Karen..?

Plenty opportunities for drinking - either in the bar at the hotel or, as per last year once the event finished, Varsity which is on the way to the rail station and city centre (among other bars indeed).

The hotel does a full menu aswell, so ye shall not go hungry. Last year we put our orders in before the start of play, and food was ready for 1pm. I also insist on a good hour for lunch, so that we can take the time to relax between games!

I will avoid Saturday 3 October since that appears to be a no-go.

Jon raised the possibility of staying at the hotel; are any others thinking of doing the same? Because if there are sufficient numbers, I could look into having a quiet word with them and see if they'll do some kind of discount on a mass booking...

Keep it rolling!

Cheers

If I'm available (three weddings and as yet unscheduled bowling events in Sep & Oct) I'll be there! No real interest in a hotel, as I can (hopefully) stay over in Hinckley for free, or just drive home.

Don't want to be a moaner, Jeff, but last year's room was kind of small and stuffy. Do Stoneycroft have a larger conference room we could use? Especially since it seems there's gonna be more peeps this time round.

A good point well raised, Dinos (with apologies for the late response - I've just returned from a week away).

The wall at the back of our venue last year was actually a partition; there was another group in the other half of that room and they had the window end. So if you take the partition out, job's a good'un. I do agree with you, what with the heat from the laptop, the projector, the lights etc.

To answer your question properly though, yes Stoneycroft do have other rooms - I will enquire about availability and also ventilation.

It's worth remembering that Saturday 30 August 2008 was not only warm and sunny across most of the UK, but it was particularly humid and I gather just about everywhere in the land had a thunderstorm that evening or overnight. This year's event looks like it'll land somewhere around mid-October, so I doubt we'll see the same conditions this time around.

More details anon but, as Dinos points out, it's encouraging that there might be a higher turnout this time.

Going to the hotel this afternoon to book it. Following requests, I am avoiding the weekends of 3/4 and 17/18 October, but otherwise, I may have something to announce later this evening...

Ah yes. Hmm. If you could also avoid 10/11 October that would be super. I'm free any weekend but that.

Sod's law, Junaid. Everyone else, put Saturday 10 October in your diaries. I'll set up a new thread with full details tomorrow but the event will run identical to last year (plus the other half of last year's room aswell, so we'll get windows / natural light / fresh air etc).

A demain

I have two train open days that weekend, Acton on both days and Long Marston on the Sunday. Looks like I'll have to miss one of them as I'm not missing COLEI for the world.
