CANCELLED - CoNuT - Countdown In Newcastle 2020 - Saturday 28th March 2020

Post by James Robinson »

TOON TIME FOR THE THIRD YEAR IN A ROW!!!

Yes, it's me again, and after a year's sabbatical, Innis Carson returns, so we can host yet another CO-event, back in the vibrant city of Newcastle upon Tyne!!! So, it's CoNuT TIME AGAIN!!!

Venue:
Our venue is the PTE Social Club, just a couple of miles east of Newcastle city centre in the area of Byker (yes, as in Byker Grove). The address is Millers Road, Byker, Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne & Wear, NE6 2XP. (For a look yourselves, go here: https://www.yell.com/biz/p-t-e-social-c ... e-3977382/) Easy access from Newcastle station is available by the Metro services, the yellow line has easy access from the centre. Chillingham Road is 3 stops down from Monument, which is literally a couple of minutes walk from the venue.

General Overview:
Presented by James Robinson and the returning Innis Carson, using the "Bristol" classroom format and playing along with big screen virtual studio graphics:

Based on the successful introduction in COHUD 2017, we're using a group stage format, players will be drawn at random into groups of equal numbers playing a set number of heat matches (more than likely to be 5). This means players will know at the start who they will be up against in the heats. These will be classic 9-round matches, (6L 2N 1C).

At the end of the heats, everyone goes into groups of eight for the quarter-finals, in order of number of wins, total points scored and +/- points difference. The winner from each heats group goes into Division A, the runner-up into Division B, third place into C and fourth place into D.

From here, everybody is seeded within their divisions to play a 15-round quarter-final (10L 4N 1C), 15-round semi-final and 14-round final (8L 4N 2C). This will be done in Swiss format, so everybody will get to play right until the end of the day.

The two finalists in Group A will sit out the mainstream final, to play the tournament’s showpiece Grand Final at around 5pm. So if you don’t make the top two, why not recharge your glass, sit back and enjoy!

Prices/Rates:
CoNuT will take place on Saturday 28 March -- doors open at 9:30am for a prompt 10:30am start, finishing at around 5:45-6pm. The admission price is set at £15 and includes a hot buffet lunch. There will be a cash bar available too. :D

We will also have dinner at Za Za Bazaar in the centre of Newcastle afterwards, and I have reserved a table for us to use for a nice dinner after the event. If you would like to join me and Innis for a brilliant "world banquet" (Have a look here: http://newcastle.zazabazaar.com/), then an additional payment of £15 will be required.

So, basically, if you want to come to the event and dinner, it's £30, but if you just want to attend the event, it's just £15.

As per usual, payments are available:
- By PayPal (https://www.paypal.me/JRTerrier7/30 (event and dinner) or https://www.paypal.me/JRTerrier7/15 (event only) (DON'T FORGET - Choose the "Family/Friends" option on payment.);
- By phone (0781 775 0544);
- By cheque (address available on request).

We look forward to having you join us up in the Geordie heartland!!!

What? This makes no sense.

What? Have you not heard. Following Boris' general election win, and given that it was the biggest tory victory since Thatcher, Countdown have now decided to go back to Thatcher times and reintroduce the classic 9 rounders to the show, and also ban any words of foreign descent.

In all seriousness I think Robbo just meant to put classic ;)

CORONAVIRUS UPDATE!!!🦠🦠🦠

Just a little update for all planning to attend CoNuT in 12 days time.

At this moment in time, the venue is still open and we currently have no plans to cancel at the moment, but we’re obviously monitoring the situation closely.

So, for now, CoNuT 2020 is still open for business.😄😎👍

Good evening all,

We at FOCAL Countdown have been debating the latest government briefings about the Coronavirus, and we have had to make the tough decision to CANCEL the Newcastle tournament.

It’s such a tough decision that has been taken, but obviously public safety and wellbeing is a top priority for us all, so we have to make this decision with a heavy heart.

All payments made will be refunded by the end of the week.

Expect similar announcements in the coming days for other events.
