COEDI3 Recaps

Post by Jack Worsley »

After another brilliant COEDI tournament, I think it's time for some recaps. I'll post all of mine, with the exception of the final, which I'm sure someone else will do. I think I know who that is already.

For the first round of games, the draw placed me on table 2 with apterite Ian Volante and Edinburgh Countdown Club member Sheila Shirsinger. I hadn't faced either of them at a co:event before.

Round 1, table 2, game 1

Score: 42–55 (max 58)

A truly horrific final important numbers game and I'm unable to see a thing for most of the round. Luckily, I manage to get eight away in the dying seconds, which is one closer than Graeme. My place in the final was now secure after results elsewhere.

Round 9: B E A R N O R T H

Graeme buzzes on 25 seconds to say EARTHBORN which is incorrect.
Jack buzzes on 29 seconds to say HEARTBORN which is incorrect.
The answer was ABHORRENT.

A disappointing end to the game as we both guess incorrectly late on. Still, it didn't matter too much.

That's it for recaps from me now, I'm sure the final recap won't be too far away. Thanks once again to the organisers of the tournament for providing a day to remember.

Round 9: W I N E L O V E R

Final Score: 40–54 (max 73)

And thanks to my knowledge of remembering seeing that as Callum's first conundrum of his run, I get the win. :)

Although, us knocking points off each other didn't do either of us any good, so I needed to get plenty of Mike in the next game. :D

Score: 50–43 (max 50)

Ouch, very lucky breakthrough for me there, as Mike thought about MOUTHER, but thought better of it........ Still, the game's not done yet, time for a 6 small selection from me.

Round 8: 8, 6, 1, 4, 1, 9. Target: 642.

James: 642. (((8 + 4) x 9) - 1) x 6 (10)
Mike: 641.
Score: 60–43 (max 60)

And I get the win wrapped up, but it's even more misfortune for Mike, as he actually wrote down the right answer, but had mistakenly thought he used a number twice, so didn't use it :!:  :o :(

But, can I get the MAX GAME :?: :?: :?:

Round 9: C R I M P F E E T

James buzzes on 1 second to say IMPERFECT which is correct.
Final Score: 70–43 (max 70)

And with probably the most ironic conundrum choice, it's A MAX GAME, BABY :!: :!: :!: ;) :) :D  8-)

And with 70 points extra to boot, that gave my score at the end of the first pass, a decent 124 points.

Next up for me was Rob Foster and another duel with Ryan..............

Back later with that. ;) :) :D  8-)

So, part 2 sees me take on Ryan again, but first, a duel with Rob Foster. He'd beaten me to win the CONOT title in 2011, but I got my revenge at CoBliviLon last year. Who will win the 3rd face-off :?: :?:

Ryan buzzes on 17 seconds to say CRICKHEAD which is incorrect.
James buzzes on 27 seconds to say CRACKHIDE which is incorrect.

Final Score: 53–43 (max 70)

Unfortunately, me and Ryan were both stumped by the conundrum, leaving me with the win, but like my last match with Ryan, a long way down on points.........

Only gaining 104 from my 2 games on Table 3 meant my total was only 228 after 4 games. I would need a miracle to be in the top 2 by the end of the day.

Re: COEDI3 Recaps

Post by James Robinson »

So, we've come to the grand final, which sees Innis attempt to win his 3rd COEDI title on the spin. Ed McCullagh couldn't stop him last year, I nearly did 2 years ago, but now it's Jack Worsley's turn to try and blunt the home fans' favourite and bring the crown down south.

Who will win :?: :? Let's see. ;) :) :D  8-)

COEDI3 grand final recap for Saturday 1 November 2014.

C1: #1 Seed Innis Carson (6 games, 5 wins, 410 points.)
C2: #2 Seed Jack Worsley (6 games, 5 wins, 373 points.)
DC: James Robinson (with the ODO dictionary) and Mike Brown (with Lexplorer).

Innis: 337.

RR: 334. ((9 + 4 - 1) x 4 x 7) - 2 (10)

Round 14: 3, 1, 5, 8, 7, 6. Target: 340.

Innis: 340. ((8 x 5) - 6) x (7 + 3) (10)
Jack: 340. ((8 x 7) + ((3 - 1) x 6)) x 5 (10)
Score: 100–107 (max 111)

Jack goes 6 small again, but no joy this time, but it does bring up a double ton, and unsurprisingly, A CRUCIAL CONUNDRUM :!: :!: :!:

Round 15: B A I L G R A C E

Innis buzzes on 1 second to say ALGEBRAIC which is correct.
Final Score: 110–107 (max 121)

Almost instantaneously, it's solved by the Flying Scotsman, who maintains his perceived immortality in Edinburgh.

A brilliant performance by Jack, but in the end, he just couldn't build up that lead to put him out of reach.

So, that's another tournament done, just one to go this year, and that's mine and Jeff's at Huddersfield this coming Saturday, which even though short on numbers, does seem like it will be high on quality. ;) :) :D  8-)

So, till then, see you soon. 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-)
