by Tony Atkins
We ran the fourth COREA (Countdown in Reading) on the Saturday _after_ Easter weekend, 11th April 2015, in Woodley in Reading.

Results at at http://www.kisekigo.com/corea15/results.html

We again raised money for charity (Christians Against Poverty) and had lots of the usual fun.

Skip down this thread past the pre-event stuff to get the recaps.

For those who use the (correct) definition that the Saturday after Easter Sunday is Easter Saturday, then
yes it is Easter Saturday, and not Holy Saturday or whatever you want to call the day between Good Friday
and Easter Sunday. Unfortunately, as mentioned this year, there is a wedding on our normal day and the church
and hosts are unavailable.

And what about those from the Eastern hemisphere who may attend? Holy Saturday is a week later there - 11th April 2015 so Easter Saturday would be the 18th April 2015. So is it Holy Saturday or Easter Saturday the tournament is being played on for them?

I'll see if I can make this one. And if I do go I shall see you on EASTER SATURDAY :P
Yes the Christian tradition and all sensible calendars have Easter Sunday down as the first day of Easter, so shall it be.

game 5 with a tremendous 130.

The final was hosted by Tony Atkins with Hannah McIntosh in Dictionary Corner and

Round 1: H R L P I O I U E

Jack: HIRPLE (6)
Conor: OILIER (6)
OT: HOKIER, POKIER, PUKIER (6)
Score: 6–6 (max 6)

Both players make a steady start.

Round 2: T F N O O E D V E

Jack: DENOTE (6)
Conor: DEVOTE (6)
OT: FOOTED, VENTED, VETOED (6)
Score: 12–12 (max 12)

Still nothing better than six available.

Round 3: 100, 25, 50, 75, 8, 6. Target: 524.

Jack: 524. (50+(75/25))x8+100 (10)
Conor: 524. (75+((6x25)/50))x8-100 (10)
OT: 524. (75+50+6)x(100/25) (10)
Score: 22–22 (max 22)

Jack picks his usual four large and the players find alternative routes to solve this 62 percent difficulty sum.

Teastime teaser: ISATBLUE -> SUITABLE

During the ads James Robinson promoted COStAl (St Albans) 27th June
and Mike Brown promoted CO:KL (King's Lynn) 23rd May.

Round 4: L Z R E I A T U O

Jack: LAZURITE (8)
Conor: LAXURITE (8)
OT: TRIAZOLE (8)
Score: 30-30 (max 30)

Both players get a great eight and some of the audience got the alternative eight.

Round 5: W M D K O E O U S

Jack: DUOMOS (6)
Conor: MOUSED (6)
OT: MUSKWOOD (8)
Score: 36–36 (max 38)

Well done to those in the audience who spotted the darrenic 8.

Round 6: 25, 1, 7, 4, 3, 1. Target: 945.

Jack: 945. (25+3-1)x7x(4+1) (10)
Conor: 944. -
Score: 46-36 (max 48)

Conor picks his usual one large, but it is a hard one!
Jack manages to find the only solution to this 87 percent difficulty puzzle.

In the guest spot, Tony name-drops lots of previous Countdown champions by giving the answers
to the 2014 quiz (it was a year late being handed out).

Round 7: N N N D E I A M E

Jack: ADENINE (7)
Conor: ADENINE (7)
OT: NANNIED (7)
Score: 53-43 (max 55)

Both players get the same seven, but Dylan watching online and some of the audience see the other one.

Round 8: S M N O O O V A A

Jack: MOONS (5)
Conor: MOANS (5)
OT: ANOAS, MASON, MONOS, NAAMS, NOVAS, OMASA, SAMAN, SOMAN (5)
Score: 58-48 (max 60)

A rubbish selection typical of COREA means a flat fives round.

Round 9: 25, 50, 75, 100, 1, 10. Target: 471.

Jack: 471. (50-(75/25))x10+1 (10)
Conor: 471. (50-(75/25))x10+1 (10)
Score: 68-58 (max 70)

Back to Jack's four large and both find the 69 percent difficulty solution.

Teatime teaser: ISTEWROD -> WORDIEST

During the adverts the work of Christians Against Poverty was described
and Catriona Cappleman talked about the money management courses she helps to run.

Round 10: D R S U I E F S I

Jack: FISSURED (8)
Conor: DIURESIS (8)
Score: 76–66 (max 78)

Each find one of the two eights and Jack keeps his ten point lead.

Round 11: B T N C A E U O P

Jack: PATONCE (7)
Conor: PATONCE (7)
OT: OUTPACE, PUNCTAE (7)
Score: 83–73 (max 85)

A choice of sevens here, but they pick the same one.

Hannah presented "The Origin of Worms" feature - the original feature proposed by Susie Dent for Countdown
but rejected as being too limited.

Round 12: G C J A U O T E T

Jack: COTTAGE (7)
Conor: COTTAGE (7)
Score: 90-80 (max 92)

Both players get the Darrenic cottage.

Round 13: S P S R O I A E X

Jack: SOAPIER (7)
Conor: PROXIES (7)
OT: ASPIRES, PARESIS, PRAISES, SPIREAS (7)
Score: 97–87 (max 99)

And again a choice of sevens.

Round 14: 100, 3, 8, 4, 10, 2. Target: 380.

Jack: 380. (100-3-2)x4 (10)
Conor: 380. (100-3-2)x4 (10)
Score: 107-97 (max 109)

Unfortunately for Conor his one large selection gives a 2 percent difficulty puzzle
(how many methods can you find in 30 seconds?) which means he needs to get two conundrums to win...

Round 15: T O N I S A T A P

Jack buzzes on 2 seconds to say ANTIPASTO which is correct.
Final Score: 117-97 (max 119)

Jack holds on to the COREA title for a second year, much to the relief of the organisers
who didn't have a back up conundrum ready.

Well done to both players for high class play both in the final and throughout the day.

Another top day yesterday, Tony. The standard of the players there yesterday was ridiculously high, and the final between Jack and Conor didn't disappoint either.

Onwards and upwards to CO:REA5 next year. ;) :) :D
