A LITTLE LESS COUNTDOWN, STILL PLENTY OF ACTION
Saturday 23rd August 2014, in London
10.00 – 6.00
St. Alban’s Centre, Holborn, vibrant and exciting area, 2 mins Chancery Lane Tube, lots of shops and coffee places
Spacious Conference Centre with light, airy rooms and secluded courtyard
Option to purchase light lunches, bring your own or head to nearby pubs eg Cittie of Yorke 'The architecture of the entire space is truly phenomenal', 'a beautiful vintage bar that oozes history '.
Thanks to Pete Steggle for researching the venue and the area

http://www.fancyapint.com/Pub/london/ci ... -yorke/134

There will be 4 normal Countdown games at 10.15, 11.15, 12.15 and 2.15 with a final at 3.25 followed by prizes and a team quiz at 4.30 for about an hour for those able to stay.
Games will be 12-rounders LLNLLNLLNLLC, because we have a lot of other things to fit in to make the event Multi.
At the end of each normal game you will have a choice between Countdown variants (CoVariant Trophy) and other short verbal and number challenges (CoMultiLon Trophy). You may of course do neither, but I don’t recommend trying to do both.
For those who like their Countdown pure and unadulterated, there will be an award for achievement in the original format only.
The Countdown rounds and variants will be played in the main hall, mostly using the screen, and other activities will take place in the foyer or upstairs rooms, using pen and paper. There will be among other things an easy Killer Sudoku and a small cryptic crossword. Credit will be given for incomplete puzzles.
All CoVariant competitors will do 6 rounds each of Goatdown and Touchdown letters and 6 of Four Large Numbers. Just before lunch these players can choose 2 variants, out of Lockdown, Aegilops, Nasty and Omelette, for 6 rounds each on paper rather than from the screen, so no-one will be forced to do all the variants. These variants will include a couple of numbers rounds and all six will be scored by the Stepdown method. At this point CoMultiLon competitors will also have a choice of 2 out of the 4 remaining challenges.

Hosted by Phyl and Heather Styles (with a little help from their friends)
£15 includes tea, coffee and squash - and CAKE (says Heather)

I'm sure there will be interest, London co-events always attract loads of people. Sadly I can't be among them, because I'm on holiday then.

It seems 100 people have had a look at this page and only one has replied - sorry you can't make it, Graeme! It is still early days, of course, but exploration of venues has to take place, followed by financial commitment, so a little feedback would be good.
After the event, the idea of Riley's Sports Bar or similar has been mooted, which would probably be another £10 if you wanted to reserve table tennis and pool tables for private use and unlimited play, open till 3 am, so you only have to walk about for an hour or two before you can escape the city?
PS I promise not to sing

There seems to be a few people who would be interested but can't make the date for various reasons.
For me, it's a long way to travel normally, though possibly doable.
If the date was changed to September 27th however, I may be interested, as I will be in London 2 days later visiting Australian royalty at the O2 Arena :D

If anyone likes other games, and is coming to London for this, then it is right in the middle of the annual Mind Sports Olympiad week and in fact on a day where they have no events as their venue is not available.

Details at http://www.msoworld.com/schedule/

Further to the Mind Sports Olympiad which runs on both sides of CoMultiLon, there are as Tony says events on the day before and the day after which might be of interest to anyone travelling up early or using the Bank Holiday weekend to stay over longer.

Payment for CoMultiLon

by Phyl Styles
If you sign up to the Pingit app
http://www.barclays.co.uk/Mobile/Barcla ... 2603570446
you can send me your CoMultiLon money via my Pingit account.
You don't have to be a Barclays customer.
The only fiddly bit in the registration is that when they make two tiny payments into your account to check it's working you have to find out from your statement what these amounts are.
This has just been trialled by JR and doesn't take many minutes to achieve, thanks, James.
Name under which I registered is Phyllis Styles, mobile 07908933085. Seems you need to add me to your phone contacts list.
If you haven't got phone or internet banking it could be a pain, in which case please send me a message via Forum, aptomail or FB and I can give you an address for a cheque to be sent to or my account details for you to pay it straight in.
Thanks, all!

I've not been to London before so have no idea how the tube works. I'll be getting the tube from King's Cross train station to Chancery Lane in the morning. Can someone who is familiar with the tube please explain to me how/when I buy a ticket, and any other details you think I may need to know?

Tube map here: http://www.tfl.gov.uk/cdn/static/cms/do ... be-map.pdf
From King's Cross, go two stops south on the Piccadilly (dark blue) line, then change at Holborn, then go one stop east on the Central (red) line to Chancery Lane. You can buy tickets at the Tube station, costing about £4, if I recall correctly. http://www.tfl.gov.uk is good for planning journeys in London.

Hmmm... in two minds as while I'm quite happy to come along and be the fall guy for someone out for a record score, I'm also heavily involved in MSO that week (one gold and two bronzes to defend) when not at work and my family would probably like to see a bit of me at some point! Any thoughts of joining up and making it a MSO event in future years?

Further to all the information on the CoMultiLon Hangout (the after-show party),
Ned Pendleton has nobly offered his place as a refuge for the post-pub hours, and fortunately it happens to be situated in central London.
He did say the offer was open to all, which was rash but generous .....
If you haven't read the various ideas for eating, drinking and playing, read the posts on here, as well as the summary newly on FB, and information about shared rooms at £33.75 pppn.
I think the time is coming where we need to have a poll or brainstorm on the options listed, especially as The Old China Hand, which has a strong personal appeal, is offering a FREE booking with FREE table-tennis and darts for a group of a large enough size (still open to negotiation), and a FREE booking is a rare thing, especially in London.
I recommend booking a meal at The Clerk and Well (Thai cuisine) and then moving on the Old China Hand, then even at 2 am you can catch the N38 night bus down to Ned's.
Facebook also has a new snazzy map which will be available on the day to everyone, showing most of the places mentioned.
Time for your feedback, drinkback and playback. :)

Re: CoMultiLon

I put out a survey on FB which some of you will not have seen.
The basic questions it asked were:
1. which format are you choosing for the day?
2. do you want to order food at the venue? hot/cold?
3. are you interested in a Thai meal at The Clerk and Well? The other pub very near is The Yorkshire Grey, which sounds more like a cup of tea, but has good reviews
http://www.theyorkshiregrey.com/
4. will you come to the table-tennis, darts and gamesy pub (Old China Hand) where we could have a free group booking?
5. would you like to go to Ned's after that?
I am not trying to force anyone to do anything, but I do need to know if you want me to book anything on your behalf.
It really is important that I hear from you in the next few days as I am going away and the various venues are waiting for a reply from me about all this stuff. Thanks.

I think it would be really good if we could get a free group booking at the table-tennis, darts and gamesy pub (Old China Hand), but I know that this will depend on getting enough positive responses very soon :) Do they do karaoke too? ;)

Thanks to everyone who contributed to a good day yesterday - the best part was that you all came! (38 of us)
The CoMultiLon Trophy (Countdown plus multiple puzzles) was won by Jamie McNeill with a very narrow victory over Richard Freeland.
The pure but not simple Countdown prize went to Zarte Siempre with James Robinson as runner-up in a very strong field.
Innis Carson took home the CoVariant Trophy with a near perfect performance in some of his favourite formats, with Zarte taking second place.
Bob De Caux won the quiz
With a little help from the Quizzerables team.
Well done all winners and competitors including at least a dozen who had not attended a Co-Event before. We were pleased to welcome friends from Mind Sports Olympiad and hope that in spite of the hectic day they enjoyed themselves and will come back again.
