I make it that with just one set of large numbers in the mix, the chances of each type of game appearing are roughly:- 6 small - 28.8% 1 large - 46.1% 2 large - 21.6% 3 large - 3.4% 4 large - 0.1% But if you introduce more than one of each large number that would change the very fabric of the number...

Haven't seen the show, but on the face of it that sort of deliberate ambiguity sounds unforgiveable.

At least every time Richard Osman fucks up Formula One questions on Pointless you can put it down to lack of knowledge rather than a deliberate attempt to cause confusion.

It's an obvious flaw of the seeding system that a player with more points from less games (and therefore a clearly superior player) gets seeded lower. Maybe that's one of the reasons why the finals rarely play out in line with the seedings. It makes things more interesting though. I would be surpris...

Yeah, it was a tricky one, but on balance I think it would have been more controversial not to allow it. At least on paper the 15 point swing didn't affect the outcome.

And I think on reflection (and checking the maxes on the wiki) maybe this game wasn't quite the ultra high standard I had assumed (albeit far above my own) - but after Jamie's debut I thought anyone who could beat him must be a relative of Julian Freeman Travers or something.

So why did 2 such obviously great players get pitted against each other at this stage?

An easier record to get might be the octochamp with fewest maxes. He's on 31 at the mo I think, a mere 6 away from the record - and 6 is the most he has managed in one game.

I would disallow on the grounds the answer arrived at by following his instructions is 739, not 729.

However, I don't think a player should need to know the answers to the immediate steps as long as the final outcome is correct.

The relevant number from the triangle is 252, so the probability of exactly 5 heads out of 10 is 24.61%.

I therefore assume this is what the original question was getting at, as the probability of at least 5 is just over 62%.

My understanding is that a 1 in 32 chance would be classed as 31-1 in terms of fair odds. Do we mean exactly 5 heads or at least 5? For exactly 5 then the probability would be 0.5 to the power of 10, multiplied by the number of different ways this can be achieved eg the heads might be tosses 1 2 3 4...

Of the borderline contenders, would players who have only had one bite at the cherry (eg David Barnard, Samir Pilica) be more favourably looked upon than higher scoring players who had a second run (eg Glen and Bradley)?

Doesn't the printed dictionary go into much more detail than the free online one regarding the origins of words? Obviously this isn't an issue affecting the game itself, but it might make Susie's explanations of the more uncommon words less interesting.
