To be honest, I'd say Countdown is 'fair' just because the best player (usually) should win - as long as you're the best player in the series then you don't have to worry about the bad luck of coming up against a good player in your 8-game run (cf. all those unfortunate, would-be finalists who came ...

I have a vague memory of games when she didn't do it every round. and then I think she thought that everyone laughing politely were people actually finding it funny (maybe she doesn't notice because she's too busy laughing herself), so decided it was an easy way to be amusing.

Well if 8.8% of number games are not solvable, then that means the probability of 3 not solvable rounds in one show (assuming first that the contestants pick any one of the possible games uniformly, which is unlikely) is 0.000681472, so you'd expect one such show every 1468 episodes.
