Good to see you prepare. I've done 3 months of it myself. The theory being that it will come as second nature spotting things in spite of the pressure you're under. That's the weird thing. The pressure I feel is in just trying to maximise performance, rather than the fact you're on TV.

Thought of FUZEES in R1 but it is a US spelling. English spelling is FUSEES which I didn't think of.
Though I don't think it's worth gambling for a 6 letter word.

I think the most nervous thing would be first coming on and having to talk a bit about yourself. After that, you'd be too busy trying to spot words and numbers within the 30 seconds.

An example of consistently spotting the sevens and eights, which makes you very difficult to beat.

Or pick what you think your opponent would be weak at.
For example, some players pick 6 small numbers. I doubt that it's what they're most comfortable with, but rather what they perceive to be their opponent's weak spot.

You could win the last 6 games of a series to put you 8th in the list, but then lose the first in the next series and come 9th in the rankings. I've noticed that players tend to avoid selecting five vowels, but I would say there's a reasonably good chance of making 8 and 9 letter words from them.

I first started watching in September after a long break, and I thought the standard had really improved. Then after that I was rather underwhelmed. However, the quarter-finalists seem really strong.

I wonder what the percentage is of players who appear on the programme who fail at the first hurdle?

The format of the shows seems to generate serial winners, so there must be a high number of players who don't win a match.

Damn! I know PERINEA but didn't spot it. That's the challenge with Countdown. If you are given 7 letters it's relatively easy to spot the seven letter word, but harder to select it amongst 9 letters.

Indeed. In 1994, for example, Forrest Gump won best picture while the Shawshank Redemption and Pulp Fiction were runners-up.

Can't remember what round it was but I saw BRUCITES. Probably wouldn't be allowed as it is a mass noun, but the singularly form would have tied the round.

I've bean analysing the on-line Oxford dictionary for some time. On today's programme I saw the word 'betaines'. However, betaine is a chemical and shown as a mass noun, so I would guess you can't have that. I also spotted 'beamiest' which I believe is acceptable so I would have gone for that. Thoug...

I've just received the literature for appearing on the show, which includes a section on allowable words, in particular mass nouns.
