Yeah – this was in unlimited and I was feeling confident, never having bothered to check it and assuming it was like the fencing guards, which are also numbers and valid.

Re: Words You Would Have Thought...

After having DC give SEXTETTES many times, I was pretty surprised to discover that *nonettes was invalid.

Re: The pencil thread

I was pretty amused by this last night, when I was playing some French games despite not actually knowing French. ^^; Round 8: DC informs me that there's a word DOIGTES. http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=244840 Minutes later, in another game: it comes up again and I get a French pencil. http...

Re: Words You Would Have Thought...

I've seen a similar thread before (HEPTANES/ethanes etc.), but is there any good reason why BOVINE, FELINE & EQUINE are listed as nouns as well as adjectives,(allowing BOVINES, FELINES, EQUINES as valid words) while similar words like CAPRINE, PORCINE, VULPINE etc. are not ? CANINES (teeth) and...

Re: Words changing meaning.

…And a verb. Yeah. XD I think it's when things are used as mass nouns that they "become" adjectives. You say something is crap rather than a crap, so it sounds like an adjective and that you can add ER and EST. Or an abstract noun, like "fun". But yeah. Predicate nouns getting re...

Re: Words changing meaning.

In light of this , would things like "rubbisher" and "crappest" be valid words? Rather than crap, crappy is more often used in comparative and superlative senses, i.e. crappier, crappiest. Crapper is used by some as another word for toilet. That's all exactly the same as i...

Re: Words changing meaning.

I'm starting to get confused now that 'pissed' is being used in the American sense, i.e. 'pissed off', rather than 'drunk'. I'm having to re-read sentences to work out which meaning of 'pissed' is more likely. I'm confused in the other direction whenever I read things like this board. :D (I myself ...

Re: Feature requests

What about just hitting space/return? Now the letters disappear would this be very cheatable? I, too, have often wished there were just a button you could press for the purposes of buzzing in, no matter what the first letter was. Also, there's that thing where if you both buzz in at almost the same...

Re: What languages do you speak?

My "other" are Finnish and Hebrew, but 1) I'm not from the UK and 2) both of those are just a result of me going out of my way to learn cool non-Indo-European languages, rather than any more legit linguistic background. (I've studied both for less than two years.)

Re: Disapproval

So, what does happen when the 50 games are up? We can still do everything we could as trial players before, except actually play?

(I was planning on subscribing at some point anyway, but now it will be even sooner. :D )

Re: Feature requests

Would you have a list of other things as well? E.g. will play hyper, won't play blind, will play omelette, won't play goat, will play numbers attack, won't play bullet etc. I wouldn't. The way I see it, the dictionary is separate from those: I can learn how to play / get good at playing omelette if...

From what the OED says, it seems like it should be pronounced /'æp.tə.ɹəs/.

Re: Feature requests

Somehow it has to exclude the impression that you are willing to play in any of your nominated languages at any given moment. Actually, I was thinking the opposite: a feature that you can change as often as you want, but at any given moment show a list of "languages such that you can feel free...

Re: Are you better or worse than your rating suggests?

I'm somewhat hilariously inconsistent – I'll play someone and beat them by 20 points or something, then play them again immediately afterward and end up with less than half their score. There are some people who are ranked lower than me right now that I've never been able to beat, so I said worse.

Re: Which languages do you know?

The languages I know (for some definitions of "know") that aren't already on apterous are Hebrew ("Vowel, please!") and Finnish (which would also be impossible to play Countdown in, partially because of the vowel harmony – you'd need it to be consonants-only unlimited omelette or...

Re: Words You Would Have Thought...

Some of the most memorable words I was really confident about but had disallowed were "bocal" (I'd like to know what the OED people think the thing you stick an English horn reed onto is called), "rehair" (a violin bow, for instance), "foeman" (or maybe it was "foe...

Re: Feature requests

I think it would be cool to have something on your account settings or profile say what languages you know/can play in. As it is, to find people to play in German when I feel like playing in German, I have to search through the stats/leaderboard pages for people who have played games in German, and ...

Hello! You might recognise my name as someone you've clobbered on apterous at some point within the last month or so…I'm an American college student (although, when left to my own devices, I basically spell like a Canadian…^_^), and I watch Countdown on Youtube. (Although there's not much there. Wha...
