Re: Obscenity democracy

Seriously, I have never seen any evidence that black people are bothered by the existence of golliwogs. If you want some evidence, try calling a black person a 'wog'. In a way, that's my entire point: "wog" is well-known to be an insult and could not be uttered any other way. A "goll...

Or watch that Spike Lee film 'Bamboozled', which shifts blackface into a contemporary context. He doesn't seem too keen on the whole...

Re: Obscenity democracy

So you're offended by the fact that it's not an exhaustive list of all the purposes of a vagina? This seems like a recipe for being offended by... pretty much everything. No, and I'm not offended by the word vagina. I was trying to put the offensiveness of the word 'cunt' into some context, by maki...

Paul Hammond wrote:I don't think etymology is particularly relevant to how offensive a word is. "Nigger" just means "black" etymologically, after all.
An example of an offensive word having an inoffensive etymology doesn't prove that a word cannot be offensive because of it's etymology.

How is that offensive?
It suggests that the purpose of a woman's vagina is to sheath a penis. In fact, it has many uses.

I don't see the problem with cunt, anyway. Etymologically, 'vagina' is more offensive to women; it means 'sheath'.

Yesterday, I tipped over into a winning record. Today, I've broken the top 50.

Something is finally sinking in... 8-)

Maybe not worthy of making the shortlist but I thought I'd throw this one into the mix because a) I beat the beast who is Jimmy Gough and 2) Round 1. :)

Re: Obscenity democracy

Incidentally, I'd say that racist, homophobic, sexist or ableist slurs are far more offensive than your common or garden swear words. I voted for the removal of old man Fritzl not because I was shocked at his presence in dictionary corner, but because I had to read the word 'cretin' every two minutes.

Re: Obscenity democracy

Aye, I was thinking that was a bit more Daily Hate than we usually see around here! Amusingly, there was a chap on Radio 4 the other day complaining about the misrepresentation of Daily Mail readers on comedy panel shows. He was genuinely upset that panelists seemed to be stereotyping a large group...

Obviously not. And I've gotten into trouble with the missus for the same reason while playing Scrabble . ;)

Naturally. I just thought that if it was simple, it'd be a little thing to make life a little nicer.

When the conundrum-manufacturing thing is doing it's business, it would be nice if the shorter words weren't racial epithets. I don't know whether this is easily achievable, and obviously it's a small gripe. But if you search for ENGRAVING in past conundra, you'll see my point. Thanks! :D That exac...

I am a noise musician Mike Patton style? kid606? Not really. I do solo harsh noise and percussion improv. If you know Wolf Eyes, I guess that's the most popular comparison. Also, free improvised rock and jazz, in various ensembles. http://www.myspace.com/totalvermin is the myspace for my tape label.

Hello. I'm 26 and a life-long Countdown fan. I have long desired to appear on the show, but have always argued myself out of applying. I intend to join apterous to gauge my skills. Perhaps I shall this very eve. I am unemployed. Would this work against me in the application process? It seems to me t...

I did a -2 game today. I didn't know SUNSPACE and didn't get it, and I didn't get TAMARINS either although I have heard of that. I was quite pleased to get MARTINS, I was thinking of MARTINIS but alas no, it's a proper noun. Good game thought, quality was pretty good, obviously there were a few dis...
