A rating system would be more effective. It works well in chess and generally suggests who the strongest player is. The only problem with Countdown is that it's a knockout format. In chess if you lose you just lose a few rating points but you always have the opportunity to redeem yourself; in Countd...

Des had some sort of inner ear condition though so that may be the reason. I think someone had said that he had it for about 8 weeks. He was also a little unsteady on his feet so I think he performed admirably given he is operating under trying circumstances.
